Axl's got good taste. I live in a very beautiful part of Australia, by the sea, where I grew up, only in poverty. However, even renting a 1 room slum, I always made sure I had 'ocean views' and could hear the big waves crashing. I one such slum, I could sit in bed and watch the ocean reflected through the window on a broken large mirror, from my bed and hear the waves crashing all night.Who needs TV screen?! 'How can you be educated and still live like this? You are such a disappointment, living in this slum, among all these losers, no kids, no husband... Get your life together, blah, blah' (Usual hometown BS). But, with bottle of fine French champagne I salvaged when my life in the city came crashing down, listening to old records on a screechy old record player, with just a candle and moonlight for light, I was in heaven there. It used to be a nice place where visiting rock bands from Melbourne stayed and I had fond memories of being a 15 year old girl who got invited back there for after gig drinks etc with the band and I had kept a signed vinyl record one band boy gave me as a gift and a necklace, when he declared I was his GF but he needed to go off next day to Melbourne to work at his trade, as they didn't make much doing music. I asked him what he did for a crust. 'Oh, just get plastered' he replied, pouring us both another drink too many, lighting up yet another smoke. ' You mean do those plaster of Paris sculptures and stuff, real art masterpieces?' I tried complimenting him, as I really liked him... 'Nah.Just normal plastering... I'll show ya some of my fine plastering I did. Top shit, mate...' So we went on this strange date, checking out all these old slum sheds, buildings etc he and his mates had helped build, replaster etc...' To my 15 year old, naive country girl mentality then, he was a super star, a rock god, with his electric guitar, singing , prancing around, looking ultra cool, smoking, drinking, girls all over him etc.. I just couldn't believe hot shot rock stars I saw him as, did such boring mundane, hard, outdoors men's work, like my father and the rest of the men did. A neighbour stuck his head over the fence and caught him and I together and yelled to me 'You wait till your parents find out you've been slutting around with outsiders. Get your a... on home or else! You're cruisin' for a bruisin'...' Butall we had done, so far, was drink a bit of alcohol, smoke, chat, hold hands, though some of the band did smoke dope, do a few lines of coke, as everybody did drugs, but, since alcohol was my father's addecrion, I preferred that and had no interest in drugs. Then he turned to my new, handsome blonde long haired, city musician BF and shouted 'And you, you get a haircut and get a proper job or get the f... out of here and stop messing with our daughters'. (But we were no 'vestal virgins', like Procol Haem sang about, in the song these boys played for our dances in the bush. But there were no jobs and he did have a trade apprenticeship,as a plasterer in the city. I never saw him again. But I kept his vinyl recording of him and his band all those years and I returned to that same, now run down old slum, former holiday flats, and it felt like being 15 again and finding love...Music has such incredible power.
