- Welcome to Expedition North. This trip has been on my mind for a couple of years now, and I’m so excited to be doing it right now, at a bit of a crossroad in my life.
Because while it’s been lovely to enjoy domesticity lately, I’m hungry again for something more challenging, something new and difficult. And I guess this is it.

Any tips for cold weather? ❄ It could get as cold as -20, -30C (-4f, -22f), so any expert advice much appreciated! Edit: also, I forgot to add that this month I’ll be posting 2 videos every week! Exciting🎉

#1 tip - get your rig checked out so you don't break down out there;) I just exploded my rear axle and gears after a 2,000 mile drive to the Arctic Ocean in -75 F last week lol, would have been brutal to have that happen out there. Good luck! and that's awesome you have a stable place and a home on wheels, it's the way to go, best of both worlds;)

wool socks. I lived in Harbin China for three years - minus 35 average. I found if my feet were warm i would feel ok. Good luck. I look forward to your new adventure😊👍💪
Look into operating a diesel vehicle in extreme cold. There are tricks.
Enjoy your grandparents while you have them! I have been so blessed to have my grandmother near by the last 10 years. She just passed away at the age of 108. She was a true blessing. Just savor those moments.
My Gram has been gone for over 40 years, but remains the shining star of my childhood. Pure class, through and through!
Love your channel, but your cold weather travel is something of a mystery to me, warm weather is just as adventurous, I hope you find what you are truly looking for, you deserve the best of the best. Thank you for the content.
I have done many long events with my pup, a couple of things, watch the pads of his feet, the surface can do a lot of damage very quickly, if you can get him used to shoes I would recommend it. Food and Water, seems simple but make sure he drinks and eats enough, you have to plan for them, they will run until they drop because they are trying to make you happy, be very aware of his warning signs, drooping tail, head below the shoulders, or whatever his may be. My pup would always “bounce” when we ran, as soon as she stopped bouncing I knew she needed a break with water and food even though she was still happy and running. Most of all, you are at dog pace, when he slows down, you slow down.
Thank you for posting this. You are spot on about being aware of your dog. I would also add to be aware of how long he is exposed to the cold temperature.
Yes, I'm very concerned about her dog doing this with her in the winter and exstream temps!!
Edit: its also really bad for their lungs breathing in that cold air. They tell you not to let your dogs out in the extreme coldness . I really think this is a bad idea. If she chooses to do this, well, that's her choice but not good for her dog!
yeah wanted to say the same. it should noted that almost every dog in the world will outrun any human in the world, which speaks not only to our fragility but also to the fact that probably not every dog should. to force an animal into an adrenalin sport, i'm not a fan
I was wondering about this, booties for Vilk crossed my mind, and maybe a coat? He is obviously a really good example of a GSD and would follow Eva into hell if she went there.
Good insights on the dog part! Dog owner here as well, thought immediately about the paws. They'll need balm & wax. I'm also worried about supplies: arctic temperatures, intense activity, you burn so much calories. And that's both you and the dog. You must haul so many extra kilos of food in what I presume will be a sled. My advice is to consult people with huskies, and learn about their way of work & handling.
So many people think that Eva is having a crisis. No! It’s Eva enjoying life and getting to know herself.
Nah…. This is a classic example of a woman hitting her early 30s and being lost without a husband and children. She’s filling that void with travel and the dog.
I have a friend that took his dog on an expedition. Somewhere along on the trip the dog became injured and couldn't walk on it's own. The dog is too heavy to carry out,So he left the dog and when out on his own. It only took 2 days but by the time he got back the dog was in bad shape. Both my buddy and the dog had done many trips. He hadn't considered Having to carry his dog a long ways. Be careful out there if you're going to be on your own. Think about the dog.

People are idiots and really DO NOT care about their dogs. They just pretend it.

@@huitrecouture -- yes, though often you can tell when the dog was never correctly socialized... or the dog behaves like the owner behaves when no one is looking.
I'm having a hard time with my dog as well. RV living...he is 12, 100lbs, and his hip has gotten worse and worse. The only solution is the only one we can't bear
..but it's quickly coming to that. I love dogs so much that I hate them as well. 😢😢
I’ve done a Maximum of 60 miles with one of my dogs. I can tell you there’s a big difference between 20 miles and 60 miles for a dog. One thing I would research is how to deal with pad and foot care for your dog, as well as possibly using footwear due to the cold climate.
She's been training him to use booties! That's just one thing I've seen but I'm sure she's doing all the things to make sure Vilk gets the best experience.

This is something people often forget when running with dogs. They overestimate a dogs ability to run long distances. In general, dogs are built for short bursts of speed, not endurance. Training will help just as it does for us, but there are still limitations.
Certainly large dogs do better since they have bigger hearts and lungs than small dogs, and dogs have better size ratios than other animals, but they're still smaller than a human while having nearly the same body weight. And a dog will just keep running until it gives out especially when they're following something or someone.
If people are running with their dogs they need to be running at their dogs pace and requirements, otherwise it's possible the dog could die from exhaustion if people force them to try and keep up.
@@corvus5809 -- good points, I wonder if Vilk or Yulk will drag Eva across the line. I cannot imagine an Ultra marathon ... a half marathon is, how one would train for a real marathon, yet she ran an Ultra _68Mi_ which is a bit insane ... and now she wants to do a _double ultra_ on the Northern most coast of continental Europe and during the WINTER????
Okay, maybe not totally insane - I hope her and the dog are one on the run!

Oddly I find myself in a similar situation to yours but in reverse. I'm turning 70 this year and have just sold my house here in Colorado and bought a 32' travel trailer. I'm heading out next month to travel to 49 of the 50 states in the US.
In the process, I've given away or thrown out 50 years of accumulated stuff. All I'm taking is a week's worth of clothes and my dog. Well I do have a 60 inch TV, satellite dish and a queen size bed, but at my age, this is roughing it.
I don't know how long this journey will last. I'm planning on two years, but who knows?
excellent mate, enjoy your travels. Don't skimp on New Mexico - including the Gila Wilderness and National Forest. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
@@theinfinitepassportTVthanks for the suggestion. I'm from Denver and lived in Phoenix for years and I've spent a lot of time wandering around AZ, NM, CO and UT. The Gila Wilderness is an amazing area.
Same for me, female 69, recently widowed, giving away and selling all my stuff to start traveling for a year. May buy a car in Europe and use "work away" for volunteer work wherever I want to stay longer. May the adventure begin! Best to you!

I understand completely. I have chronic itchy feet, also known as wanderlust; I was definitely born under a wandering star. I started traveling for work New Years Day 1980 and haven't stopped travelling although I have stopped working. I counted the countries the other day it came to 40 where I had either worked in, visited or passed through. I now have virtually no possessions at all which makes life so simple.
Asked my cats a few hours ago if they would like to run a marathon with me. One is still laughing ( didn´t know cats could laugh), and the other is still hiding in the cupboard. Any way, good luck with your adventure, i´m sure you will have fun a succeed. About dressing well ... to dress well is to dress comfortable, so as long as you feel comfy, you are dressing well.
My cat "disappeared" in our new house, and I discovered he had learned to push the lower cabinet "lazy susan" enough to get in there, with it closing gently behind him. I thought he might be trapped, then realized he'd have loudly "meowed" if he was scared. Cats are like a grandmother who aren't afraid to tell us to be REASONABLE!

Eva, regarding your "one day" perspective: If you are a person who is constantly coming up with great ideas for excellent projects and activities to undertake, there will be a need to prioritize what you want to do. As you think more or less randomly about one prospective project or activity at a time, your level of inspiration may wax and wane and wax again, etc. The way I see it, there is absolutely no shame in indefinitely postponing or even abandoning, at least for the time being, one project or activity in favor of another that you've come to realize is more inspiring, more fruitful, and likely to be more satisfying.
About your idea of "type 2 fun": The way you frame it sounds absolutely crazy. Of course, there is often a cost of one sort or another with any project or activity you undertake. A proper approach, especially if you have lots of inspiring ideas for activities or projects -- so many that you could not possibly accomplish all of them in your lifetime -- is to undertake a cost-benefit analysis. In other words, consider which activities or projects are likely to be the most satisfying or fruitful compared to the cost. That's the only rational way of undertaking such projects or activities. It typically seems that a cost-benefit analysis is highly subjective and that you lack important information for decision-making purposes. This makes the decision-making process highly complex, and the decision-making processes are frequently subject to change as you discover new possibilities with one project or activity or another.
But I fear that you will feel that you have made a promise to your fans to go through with this crazy type of so-called "type 2 fun". I don't like to watch you making yourself miserable. It does not make me happy. I think you must definitely have a streak of masochism in you.
Eva, you don't have to do it. Be a free person. Don't let your mind put you in a prison of your own making. Be free. Be open to quitting or greatly modifying your plans. I for one do not want to be a fan of yours who is going to egg you on to undertake this crazy idea.
Im an American living in far north Sweden above the arctic circle. Ive lived all over the world in all different climates but im telling you the tundra is a whole different beast! Stock up on plenty of vitamin D, skin moisturizer, chap stick, long johns, over pants, and consider getting your furbaby some extra layers as well hehe
And enough sex toys. Seriously.
The synthetic vitamin D is a poison, there is no need for that, she should take some raw liver and other organs and animal fat for that like the inuits did.
I’d check with the veterinarian to see how the trip would affect Vilk. The vet might recommend a few things to keep him safe and comfortable (jackets, boots, a different diet etc.)
Exactly, I forgot to mention this, a vet should know if the extreme weather will be ok for Vilk….I am sure you have checked this….but be extremely cautious with that gorgeous Vilk…
….I need to add that I have a page that I follow in South America, this couple,e have a a small to medium size dog….Ettore, and believe me, I suffer for him…their adventures are extreme….but he follows them like nothing, I still think it is toooo much for him….but hope for the best.

Vik was called Alsatian Wolf dog before the term German Shepherd.I live in Montana and unless sled dog racing on ice he will be perfectly fine He has a double coat,herding and F2 wolf genetics behind him and is not a slick coated dog.
Keep doing what you love and never let anyone tell you that you can't Eva. Keep your head up and keep living your life.

For emergencies I recommend a product from the US called Hot Hands. They are little packets of iron that when exposed to air reach 130 degrees F. A woman survived 3 days in a blizzard placing 1 in each glove and boot. No frost bite. Each one lasts 8 to 12 hours. Good luck.
They’re not just from the US, there are European brands as well, but I agree they work very well!
Yup - hunters in cold climates use them all the time, and they spend LONG days in the cold whenever possible.
These things are amazing. They make ones for your shoes specifically as well. I’ve used them countless times for many reasons. Highly recommend

The best gear is often strong and light, though _running_ 185KM in the arctic during winter - I guess there are a few trees for cover, hopefully no bears (and she should carry a decent rifle - with enough animal to kill an angry or desperate bear) - Yulk only takes on the big challenges!
I think Eva needs a nick name. I propose, "Forestie Gee", for the legendary and fictional running, Mr Gump!

November to March isn't the time to go for a swim. But it looks good in winter though, would suggest going trough Norway on the way back though, bit of variation from the Swedish woods.

I've been without a mate for about 15 years. I do miss the intimacy at times, but it's not the end of the world. I think you'll be just fine relying on yourself.
I don't want to burden you with my problems, but I'm in the middle of something that makes me want to pass a little wisdom to you and anyone else who takes a moment to read this. Life is already far too short, but even as short as it is, you never know whether you may not have that tomorrow to do the things you've been postponing. Do what makes you happy, and don't waste too much time on the things that don't make you happy. Don't be too patient. However, I know from experience that regardless of the anxiety you feel about the impermanence of your parents, you'll be very glad you got to know them a little better while you were an adult.
Oh, my advice for cold running: You might consider shoes for Vilk, like the dog-sledders do. Ice between the toes is a real problem.
Eva, followed you on your journey in America. I give you props for the courage and confidence you had in yourself travrllling alone with your dog. Good luck to you in your new adventure. Oh, and being of Polish descent myself make us proud.

Stay close to your family and do not forget them for too long at a time.
Aside from Vilk and yourself, don't forget to prepare Odyssey for running in the cold too! Proper engine oil viscosity, block heater, fuel treatments, and have a spare fuel filter if it gels. I know you try to pack light, but still want to be prepared with a diesel vehicle in the cold. Battery jump pack might not be a bad idea either.
i think this is more something to put toughts on, eventually.
A very wise comment, diesels require a lot of tlc in extreme cold.

Your excitement makes me wish I was young again and didn't have the regrets I have at this point in my life. When I was young I had goals and ambitions and set them aside for love. The love faded and became a bitter obligation leading to disaster. That being said I then focused on my responsibilites and made sure they were taken care of. Here we are almost 4 years post pandemic and I realize that I have wasted so much time. I hope you never feel regret and would counsel you that you only really ever answer to yourself so be true to you. I will follow and watch your progress with great anticipation living out some of my fantasies through your expeditions . Thank you for allowing me to tag along ♥
Any dog exposed to freezing temperatures can develop frostbite, though those that are not acclimated to winter weather are at increased risk, along with those with thinner hair coats. Younger and older dogs are both more likely to develop the condition, as they are more prone to unstable body temperatures.

Eva, First of all, STAY Warm... Your trip sounds fantastic! Your past expeditions are awesome to watch, and you do such an excellent job documenting them. You will surely enjoy the peace of the area above the Arctic Circle in the winter. You are an exceptional person leading an amazing life; you can do anything and are continually learning. Keep your head in it, and you will see your future path clearly.

@sianspherica, Yeah, all that running you just die tired right? Funny isn't it when we run from one place to reinvent ourselves only to find out your problems just follow you around anyways. Just Grow where you're planted I guess, funny how about the time you figure it all out you're much older and finally understand just how much time you have wasted.

@@jamievarni1530, It's not about free will, you can always do what you want to. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do something in every situation. I get it, sometimes you want to shake things up, but you always expose yourself to those things which in some cases are dangerous when it comes to being on the road.
@@faithismespeaks6848 True and also true of the opposite way where staying put like the old days is a regret later but I’m more of the latter, I do not regret it though. Circumstances make life what it is.

All sounds great, exept taking Wilk with you. Not only the cold temperature, but the wind makes things next level cold! You will not be able to consentrate, when most of the time you need to try to keep Wilk warm. Leave him home and do something similar later, when the weatger suits him better.
He’s like all she’s got now, attachments… it does sound completely nuts
Fair points, though as she stated, that dog can run farther, faster for longer ... the bigger issue is discipline and dogs do pickup on human emotion, like they are wired in. I would think -40F or -40C is a possibility - esp with windchill and what happens at night? Do you slow your run down to a canter - to keep warm? Packing gear to stay warm at night (and winter - it may all be "night" or "twilight") and keeping the dog healthy would be a priority.
I mean if a bear decides the dog or Eva are food - Eva needs a good rifle, unless maybe there are more humans around and stuff to keep the bears (DA BEARS) at bay ... I think Yulk or Wilk could handle a small adult bear, probably - until Eva can kill it with a good rifle shot.
Eva, the brave. I support whatever you plan to do as long as it makes you happy. Live your dream and move forward. You always have your faithful companion Vilk on this awesome journey. Good luck and good speed!

Eva, I'm sure you already know this but don't forget snowshoes for the pup. You can't allow snow to pack between his toes and pads. You are an incredibly strong woman, do what your heart leads you to do. Never quit never surrender never give up stay strong luv.

Absolutely LOove your channel. There is a saying a boat that never leaves the harbour will always be safe. Essentially another way of saying if you want discoveries in life you have to venture out. You have such a great sense of adventure, but also a very rational mind. I've seen you plan well, living the adventure, escaping the hurricanes.

Your persepective and love of life is refreshing. Vilk has it made spending his years by your side, no doubt. I hope you continue living deeply, as you have been. You remind me of something Norman Cousins once said “the great tragedy of life is not death but what we we allow to die inside of us while we live.”

I've missed your content so much Eva... that's selfish I know, but it's good to see you back. Not sure where you had settled, or who with , as its been a while. You must not put yourself down or get low, lots of people love you. Your intended adventure sounds a real challenge, wishing you both good fortune.

I love it!
1. Try to get a fire to work in the cold for safety!
2. Look at your dogs and your extremities very careful (not to loose the dogs tail, or fingers).
3. Tain to carry also your dog in the deep snow and that he stays warm.
4. Stop immediately if someone of you to may feel too cold. Loosing a finger can happen very fast.
5. Stay dry after whenever you stop for a longer time.
6. Have fun!
7. Visit the Lofoten!
This dog weight is probably close to her own... how do you imagine carrying other stuff and him as well?

@@beazleteats4031 I do not know the dog. Maybe the dog loves to be outside and the cold weather like Huskies. That is definitely based on the dogs type. It depends on a lot of factors, if it is "cruel" or not, which we very likely can not tell yet, because we do not have all details. I think Eva knows her dog the best and the conditions in Norway what she will face. Maybe she has talked to the people there how the conditions are, etc.
We drove in winter, -22 celsius in an old caravan from the 70s with a toddler and a newborn through Norway & Sweden. With 4x4 you will have a good time ;)

A beautiful area. I once drove from Rovaniemi into Sweden along the Arctic circle, and loved it. Forests, creeks, and moose!
At this point, I'd love to hear that Eva is starting therapy and sticking with it as a way to get some grounding and direction. All decisions more or less since getting Vilk feel like a big post-rationalizing of random chaos, with new major life conclusions every few months. That's quite a sign for being lost instead of adventuring authentically
but its fun to watch, isnt it?

You should really Google what temperatures German Shepherd dogs can put up with. I just did myself and am concerned about him going to a place with the temperatures are as cold as you said they will be. Based on what I read, you may want to consider leaving him home for his own safety.
Exactly....there are dogs who are bred to handle temps like that--like Jonna Jinton's dog Nanook for example--Arctic breeds have massively thick and warm coats. But German shepherds are not like that.
She needs to rent husky, samoyed or siberian laika, for this crazy trip. Laikas love very long everyday "hunting" trips, even in the winter.

If you do not have a diesel heater for the car, install one of those. Layering clothes is good practice. Wool socks. In case your car breaks down in the middle of no where, think on what you want to have in your car. If it is -20 or even less it is going to get cold very quick.

In the winter (snow), can dogs run a marathon 100km safely? A friend of mine who is a vet and professor said ABSOLUTELY NOT. Any temperature below 10 degrees Fahrenheit would risk the dog's life. I hope you talked to your dog's vet about it.
I use to watch your vids during the pandemic. Glad to see a new one pop up. I live in Polson Montana where you went to the rodeo. If your ever back this way let me know. We have plenty of camping space and lots to do. hiking/boating/fishing/glaciers!! Great to see your dog still doing well also.

Proper studded winter tires. Battery booster. New battery for the truck, 100Ah or more. Right now here in eastern Finland it's -30C, and it takes a toll on cars, driving and especially starting in these temperatures. Good luck!

I don’t know much about dogs, but I do believe you must consult with a veterinarian. It may not be the best idea for the sake of Vilk’s health and wellbeing to take him on this expedition to freezing -20 to -30C and it actually should be colder than that in the north of Sweden in winter. You get -20 in the south of Sweden. All the way to the north and to the Arctic Circle is a minimum of -27 to -30C. That’s a minimum. In winter and in the night it can get way beyond that and you probably don’t want your dog to die there or get force him to keep on going when he can’t because if you don’t keep going then it’s also you at risk. I honestly think you have to rethink taking Vilk on that expedition. Then again, I am not expert on dogs. But I wouldn’t take a pet myself. How are you planning on keeping Vilk warm? I know you love Vilk to bits and that’s why I am saying this. His lungs can get seriously damaged just by breathing the freezing air. His tongue can get frozen in a matter of minutes. Dogs keep their mouth open and tongue out while running all-the-time! This must sound cool to do but -30C hurts on your skin and your lungs can also get damaged. I myself had my bronchioles damaged after walking for one hour in “only” -20C in Helsinki. It’s painful and there is nothing doctors can do to help you heal faster since it’s internal damage. Vilk cannot talk. How are you going to know he’s in actual pain if his lungs are getting damaged due to the extreme freezing cold air he will be breathing through his nose and mouth?
Greetings from Finland. Norway and Sweden are our neighbour countries and the weather are samekind right now. Now is winter time but the spring is coming very fast. You have to be extra carefull now because weather chance very rabidly from cold to quite warm. The wind is very hard up in the mountains and storms rise in few minutes and visibility goes zero in seconds. I am retired staff sergeant from Finnish Army Jaeger Company which train on Artict Sircle every year couple of months so I know how it is in there. Just few month ago a mother and her son die up those mountains in winter storm which rise in few hours. So keep your eyes open and be ready take some steps back.

I drove by car to the nord kapp in February few years ago. One of the top 3 best trips ever.
Biggest lesson from that trip is that you should definitely change to spiked tires at some point. I didn’t and boy did I regret the sad snow chains I brought. I’ve made it…but the weather was extremely good and I broke 3 out of the 8 that I took with me.
Bring a little mig welder with you next time.

I've lived in Norway for long time and this trip can be super simple and if you stick to the coast its not cold at all. The cool thing about it is that you can get off the beaten track and there are soooo many amazing spots there.
