I'm a Spanish -Speaker and I like American English, is so smooth and easy to understand. British English confuses me and British people speak so fast and I don't understand them well. Thank you Rachel for these videos, your videos help me to improve well my English and the music in English helps me too. Some day I will travel to the U.S.A. 'cause in that country there are a lot of native English-Speakers specially Pennsylvania.

Thank you,Rachel. This video inspires me a lot.My English teachers have taught me a little bit of skills about linking words but they haven't taught me how to reduce less important words! If I had known this skill,I would understand a lot of transcripts of American films and TVs without English subtitles. I wish I can realise it after watching your videos.

Hi Rachel, I've been following your channel for about two years. I integrate those tips you mentioned into daily life and it turns out they're truly incredibly helpful!! Thank you so much for offering the tremendous resources for learning English! This is literally the best channel I can find on the internet for either intermediate level speakers or beginners to improve their verbal skills.
I've also subscribed to This American Life, but on and off I still find it difficult to get every single word in an episode without looking at the corresponding transcript. Since usually the duration of episodes is about an hour, it's really wearing to replay every time when I felt that I missed some information. It's indeed a wonderful channel to listen to at leisure, so I don't wanna give up on the podcast just because I cannot fully understand it. I came back to this video since my question is directly linked to the content of it. Do you have any suggestions for my situation? Thank you in advance!🙏🙏🥺🥺

The remarkably wide range of accents is the most difficult part. Sometimes, a lot of native actors on various TV shows, movies mis-use the helping verbs, they applied the contracted form of negative do" to all persons that hindrances our psychology on how we produce sentences in a fluent, still grammatically correct. And the reduction of sound between V-ing + preposition "to", i got it now. Noticeably, very few of videos have clarified these points so far. I would be very thankful if you could explain these to me. Stay healthy as always, Rachel.

Watching movies or tv shows with the subtitles helps a lot. I started like that, and after a few months I didn’t need them anymore. My problem is that it’s difficult to understand what a person is saying when we are in a noisy place. Like at a bar with a lot of people, or in a movie theater watching a movie, with all that dolby surround effects and music.

Hello! I would strongly encourage you to listen to American podcasts or TED talks or American TV and movies. It can be very helpful to watch and listen to programs that have a transcript available, if possible (which is why TED talks can be a great tool). You can also listen to audiobooks - audible.com can be a good resource for you!

    - Take a text that has an audio (or an audio that has a transcript), no matter what it is, an youtube video, and interview, a snippet of a movie, it doesn't matter.
    - Study the text until you understand all of it, or at least the maximum you can at your current level. For this you can use dictionaries (either bilingual or monolingual), online forums, whatever.
    - Now read the text a few times (I know you already understand it, but do it anyway, it's called repetition of a comprehensible message, and it is the only reason human beings learn languages in the first place)
    - Start to read the text and listen to the audio simultaneously, do it at least 30 times (absolutely no need to be at once, you can listen to it 5 or 10 times a day until you reach 30 or even 50 repetitions).
With this you'll absorb all the english within that text, now move on to the next and the next until you reach a high level of comprehension of the language.

Thank you Rachel for your English tips.
For the past 34 years ... i couldn't pronounce the correct pronunciation of simple words ... for example (various), which i could replace it for several, but sometimes we need to pronounce this specific work that we have in our mind; okay, i do use it, but never came out of my mouth as i correctly wanted to pronounce it.... well, now i can pronounce the word "various" just as you do ( the a is between ae), sometimes the most simple words are difficult to pronounce because English is not our first language, we are learning the idiom.
I have been in USA most part of my life (37 years) and for most part of my life i have been at school/ college (after work), specifically mastering English and computers. The last 4 courses i took was back in 2008 at ACC, and finished the cementer, but my daughter stopped me to go back to college that year; she said, i was just wasting money, all i need is continue practicing English.
Believe me, after 37 years living in USA, i am still mastering Fluent American English, and i love it!
Thank you for teaching us fluent America English.
    Think Positive

I watch The Big Bang Theory every day without captions on my tablet using the VLC player. The VLC player allows you to easily go back some seconds in the video if you didn't understand something. Whenever I don't understand a phrase, I go back and listen to it several times. If after that I still don't understand it, I turn the captions on and try to figure out why I didn't understand that phrase.
