      Your stack is fantastic, I love how it sounds. It seems that you changed the splash from the classics to the traditional. Any insights on the reason behind? I am planning to get something very similar. I may just get the 16" trash crash and try to pair it with the (standard) 10" vintage splash I already have.

      Well, it would be nice if you actually made a list of the cymbals in the comments, or at the top of the page. Maybe you could also restate the qualities of each one as well, and what you like about them. I don't think I have short-term memory loss (what were we talking about again - hedgehogs?), but I think doing so would provoke more conversation and perhaps help those of us still trying to get to grips with the Meinl range.I am a Paiste user myself, and have been for over 35 years, but I have added some Meinl percussion elements to my kit - an 8.5" Rhythm Bell, a monstrous 8" cowbell and a hi-hat jingle - but have not really had any interest in their cymbals until I recently started looking at their Byzance range. I think what got me into them is that I just picked up a pair of Paiste Twenty Custom hi-hats, handmade in Switzerland from Turkish B20 bronze, and they quickly became my favourite hi-hats ever. Heavy and cutting, but with a dark earthiness that I had not really appreciated before. I used to think RUDEs were dark and earthy, but boy was I wrong!Like you said, I am going to be very careful about my first Meinl cymbal purchase, but I will probably treat it like a percussion element to start with, and it will possibly be a stack to go on the far right. However, I have a 20" RUDE China (loud, but kind of boring) there at the moment and I will be experimenting with different Paiste cymbals to lay on top of that to make a stack. I am certainly not going to start replacing my Paiste Signature Full Crashes as, for what I use them for, those are the best that money can buy.Anyway, in answer to your question, I think I like the Sand hats best. A bit drier than I am used to, but nice clear articulation. I am a little distrustful of thin crashes as I use 2Bs and hit hard. I am however, very fussy about hi-hats and have an X-hat hanging off my right crash stand, which is about to turn into a stack hat, with a perforated Paiste Swiss 14" sandwiched between a heavy RUDE top and a very bright Alpha Metal Sound Edge bottom. Having said that, I have at least half-a-dozen other mixes to try. One thing is for sure - I will not be messing with those glorious Paiste Twentys as my main hi-hat - unless Meinl can come up with something significantly better!

  • @idrumlikecrazy9802
    @idrumlikecrazy9802 4 года назад +6

    Things have changed and I’m now playing a very similar set up with half of these included lol!
    14” sand hats
    20” trash crash
    19” extra dry thin crash
    Same stack as yours (Just started using it, also adding Ching ring)
    22” vintage pure light ride
    20” jazz extra thin ride.
    The extra thin ride is way to my right as my “clean” crash option. Absolutely in love with my setup. I was playing the bullet stack but I don’t play metal anymore so I bought that traditional splash to create the one you’ve got going. It’s amazing.

    I just had "cymbal fever" last christmas and bought a Zildjian 24" medium ride... i don't wanna give up on it and say i went completely wrong in my choice, since i like big cymbals (15hh, 18c, 20c and 21cr) buuuut it was not the best option i could take, neither for the sound i was looking neither for the cymbal set i like to play with. Might sell it and try another thing, like a cymbal set for the rock/ pop rock i like to play and another set (basically another ride and a crash) for the "dixie-ish" projects i play or just other types that really benefits with a ride.
    Looking back to the set i usually played, hh and crash 18 on the left and 21 crash ride and 20 crash on the right, it was the cymbal line up i liked more, much better than 3 cymbals on the right with a ride i can "crash-ride" but that needs to be "stropped" so i can change to the ride sound i wanted

    I also have the 14" medium extra dry hats, the sand hats, the same extra thin hammered crash, the same vintage crash. We have super similar tastes but I'll admit that I can't personally get down with the vintage pure ride. Sounds great, but not for me. Currently using the 22" sand ride, but looking at the big apple dark.

      Nice choices! Lol. The Vintage Pures are definitely not for everyone. But in my experience, they have more variation from cymbal to cymbal than any other Byzance series. Keep your ears open for the “one”. It took me a long time to find mine!

    14" Sand Hats
    10" Extra Dry Splash
    20" Vintage Trash Crash
    18" Extra Thin Jazz Crash
    22" Extra Dry Medium Ride
    18" Extra Dry China
    16" Vintage Trash Crash upside down with a
    12" Classics Custom Trash splash upside down and on top.
    The sand hats are my favorite hats in the world. If anyone has this ride he's using, I'm looking to trade.. I have a 22" Mb20 Heavy Bell ride, 20" Byzance Medium crash and the 22 extra dry medium ride.

  • @StefBelgium
    @StefBelgium Год назад

    Interesting setup! How do you account for the change of sound due to the microphone capture and its rendition? I know that through compression and edition, one can achieve quite a nice fine tuning, but it s hard to find a cymbal that sound exactly the same with and without microphone. My point is that when I test a cymbal at the shop, it sounds the way I want but when captured through the microphone, it is slightly different. Is it only me or is it the same issue for all the drummers out there?

    Just curious, I’ve noticed a lot of drummers are switching to MEINL now, does anyone have experience with switching from Sabian to MEINL? I’m playing Sabians right now (love them) but I tend to break them pretty frequently. I’ve played for about 21 years now so my technique is proper and the angle is sitting right, could it be that Sabian just doesn’t last as long? Does MEINL seem to hold up better? Thx.

      A lot do actually! Meinl has a large variety of genres in its endorsees. Obviously the metal drummers mostly all use bright cymbals, but being one myself im in love with the Byzance 21inch Dry Ride. Most of the more mellow genres like jazz or funk or anything but rock punk or metal uses mostly dry cymbals, with the exception of Matt Gartska and Matt Halpern
