Great lesson, Kyle! I've been waiting for you to share a tutorial on this topic. I try so hard to mimic your style. In the beginning of my portrait phase I would watch other photographers/RUclipsrs blast their subjects with flat lighting and I thought it was the norm. After following you for so many years I learned it was the wrong approach since it did not look natural. I look forward to your future videos.
Very good blend of balancing ambient light to flash in your examples. Beautiful images. I liked how you explained how you got the shot as well. Another way you could also explain your concept is also like this, as far as balancing flash with ambient light for natural non flash looks. Always set your ambient exposure first, dial in the look you want. For a more natural look, you allow more ambient light in via your camera settings. Next add flash, think less power as you’re blending the light with the ambient. And then place the flash like you mentioned (in a way that it looks like the flash is just part of the ambient light source). Again beautiful images. Thx for sharing.
Been watching videos on tips for using flash for years and your style is what I strive for because it is the most natural. I didn’t think it was possible till watching your video. Did you use a CTO gel on your strobe for the beach shot at the 6:50 mark? Any thoughts on when/how much gel to use to get the strobe to match the colour of the ambient light? (maybe a future video idea!)
I don't use gel on any of my photos. It's normally not an issue for day time, but the flash might appear a bit warmer when shooting blue hours. It's something that can be easily fixed in post. Most of the time, I just leave it because the warmer flash and colder ambient naturally creates complimentary colours. Hope this makes sense.
Hi Kyle, I saw you often use two light as rim light one hard light and one soft light. Could you tell us what is the ratio of those two light? And the second question is if you use them as main light, is the ratio remains the same or there is different? Thanks!
The ratio of these 2 lights changes a lot. If I use both as rim light the ratio will be least of concern. But if one as key the other as fill then the ratio matters a lot. That ratio will be mainly depends on the ambient. Low light or strong backlight will require more power bottom one. Sometimes, the shadow is too dark and too much we'll have to reposition the light to fix it. No matter if you are using one light or 2 lights, NEVER go with the actually ratio or number, ALWAYS go with the look. The ratio between top and bottom lights matters less, the ratio between highlight midtone and shadow matters a LOT more. Hope this makes sense.

I‘m not a big outdoor flash fan … I’m trying to use this setup with a strong LED constant light
You might not have enough power when shooting on a sunny day. Your model might need sunglasses too.
But you can easily use any of these setup with constant lighting in low ambient. It’s a balancing game.
