    Hey everyone and thank you so much for joining Lewis and I as we delve in head frst into the world of The Hunger Games. We had heard so many amazing things about this that we had to give it a watch.
    Yes, Lewis only looks about 3, this is because this was filmed over a year ago and he has had a little growth spout since then haha.
    Katniss volunteers to replace her sister in a tournament that ends only when one participant remains. Pitted against contestants who have trained for this all their life, she has little to rely on.

      I'm glad they didn't do that in the movies because a dog with a human head would look so goofy it would take me right out of the intensity of the scene. Imagining it when I read the books just made me roll my eyes.

    When Haymitch says "Embrace the probability of your imminent death And know, in your heart, that there's nothing I can do to save you" just breaks my heart. The kids from the poor side of District 12 have to sign up for grain and oil to be able to survive. They need to sign up once for each member of their family and what it does is put the name of the child in the reaping for each time they sign up. So if a child has 3 other family members, the first year , they have their names in 5 times (4 times for the food + their regular entry). The following year, they have their names in 10 times (4 times for the food x2 years + 2 'regular' times.). The third year, they have their names in 15 times (4x3 years + 3 regular times). You get the picture. This is why Gale's name is in 42 times instead of just once per year, because he has 2 brothers, a sister and his mom. That means most of the chosen tributes come from "The seam" (The really poor part of the district). They are starving, they are small, they are tired, have no energy or muscle mass. No sponsor would take them on. So for the last 23 years, Haymitch watched 46 kids die because there was nothing he could do to save them. And then, he had to go back to the district, year after year, and face the families and loved ones of those 46 fallen tributes. For the last 23 years, he has to live with the memories of having failed to save those children. I don't even live in that world and I want to drink.
    When he sees that Katniss and Peeta have heart, they have spunk, they have muscle mass, he sees that maybe, just maybe, there is a chance he could bring one of them back alive... no matter how slim that chance may be, and for the first time in 23 years, he has hope. Sorry, this is one of my favorite series of all time so I tend to get overly passionate.
    I also can't help wondering if President Snow is Ned Stark's bastard

    Ok…. Trivia time for you. Katniss missed her first shot when she was showing her talent to the judges because
    1) Katniss’ father taught her how to make a bow and she has only used natural materials, like wood. She is used to it’s feel and balance.
    2) The bows and arrows at the capital are made of metal. She didn’t practice with them because she was hiding her talent. When she did use it, it felt weird and had a different balance. It only took her one shot to get used to it, so she didn’t miss her next two shots. One that they didn’t pay attention to and the other at the Apple in the pigs mouth.
    The capital makes up all kinds of things like the tracker jackets. Genetically engineered wasps. Mockingjays are a mix between Mocking Birds and Blue Jays, genetically engineered so that they can repeat sounds. They made and used them in the Great War. They would send the birds over the enemies camp, it would hear what they were saying, fly back to home base and repeat all of the enemies plans. After the war, there wasn’t any need for them anymore so they were allowed to be released freely. All of these things that the capital made are all called “mutts.” The dogs that chased and tried to kill they are the reconstituted remains of the fighters that have already been killed. The two black ones had collars on them with a dog tag with the number 11 on them. They were Thresh and Rue from District 11. The blonde dogs were from were the tributes from District 2. The red dog was the red headed girl from District 5, I believe… and so on. So to go up against these mutts is a double mind twist. They had already died. They were brought back in the shape of the dog but retained the memories and anger of the tribute. They also had facial features that reminded Katniss and Peeta of the dead tributes, so it was like having to kill them twice. They chose to use the black, generic dogs in the film because it could have been too disturbing for kids and young adults. And they didn’t want to get an R or a NC-17 rating from the ratings bureau.

    The hounds at the end had a more psychological warfare aspect in the book. They wore district numbers in their collars, had human eyes & hair color that matched dead tributes. Some comments I've seen think it was the actual eyes of the dead but I think mutilating them (because it is implied when they collect the bodies they are returned to their families but don't think it's ever confirmed) would be too much for the districts & there would be too much of an uproar. Its perfectly plausible with the amount of crazy technology the capitol has they used various dna samples to flash clone the tributes if it wasn't just a straight replica.

    She had to basically sight the bow like you would a gun. You can be a great marksman with a gun but if you pick one up you've never used you don't know it's personal intricacies, how it pulls, how much the kick is, etc. Similar for a bow for Katniss.

    • @SamaraVeler
      @SamaraVeler 2 дня назад +4

      I agree with this, totally. But I always interpreted Katniss's miss as being caused by Peeta's words right before her assessment (when he told her to shoot straight). She had never had to impress anybody with her skills before, and his words rattled her by reminding her of the stakes attached to her performance. I like your logic, too, though, because it would be weird to use a bow that is totally different from anything you're used to.

    When you turn 12 your name is entered once then if your family is starving you can collect a small amount of grain, oil, and a few other food basics but for each person in your family you need it for you need to enter your name again. Gale has like 5 younger siblings and a mother so he has his name in a lot and each year it increases so 12 it's once 13 twice and so on. Same for katness. It also causes resentment for the richer family in district 12 because while they have to enter their kids in the reaping they also don't have to put in for the extra food.

  • @AutumnPheonix
    @AutumnPheonix 4 дня назад +1

    The Reaping is an annual tradition in Panem, where two children from each district are chosen for the Hunger Games. The number of times a child's name is entered in the Reaping increases by one each year from ages 12 to 18, making survival a cruel cycle.
    The tesserae system in District 12 meant Katniss had to increase her entries in the Reaping to get food for her family. Tesserae is also cumulative, with five family members Gale's name was entered 32 times, an additional 7 for his years being of age to compete.

    In the movies, the leave out a lot of context about Haymitch. So this is not a spoiler and its very important to understanding Haymitch. He had a very traumatic life. He won the 50th games. He won in a similar way as Katniss. He embarrassed and showed up the game makers. They didn’t like that so Snow killed his girlfriend and entire family to punish him. Then he had to become a mentor. So every year they made him train these kids, get to know them, and then watch them get slaughtered. And there was nothing he could do to save them. This went on for 23 year so he watched 46 kids get murdered. So to protect himself he started trying to distance himself from the kids by being cold towards them. And he obviously became a drunk as well. It was his way of coping and trying to ease the pain. And i don’t blame him. I’d probably do the same if I’d been through what he’s been through. Once Katniss comes along he realizes she has a chance to win so he lets her in and starts trying again. She gives him hope.

    Something important to remember when watching these is that Katniss lived in a way that they were constantly under threat of starvation or being killed because she hunts and trades. She didn’t have any space in her mind for romance. Gale didn’t even realize his feelings towards her until he saw her in the games. Peeta saved her with the bread even though he was beaten by his mother for it. That bread at that particular point in her life meant life, hope, and a future. He always loved her.

    The writing of the Hunger Games books was inspired because one day, the author was watching TV and was switching channels back and forth between a competitive reality TV show and the war in Afghanistan. At one point, what she was watching got so blurred in her head that she couldn't tell the difference between the programs.
    I might be dead wrong, but from my understanding, that reality TV show that the author was watching was Survivor Cook Islands. The very same exact Survivor season my brother, Billy Garcia, was a contestant on back in 2006.

    Things that are in the book but were never mentioned in the movie;
    Each district specializes in certain vocations. For example, District 12, where Katniss comes from, is a mining district. Her father died in a mining accident, and as a result, her mother goes into a severe massive clinical depression where she no longer could take care of her daughters and herself. That is why Katniss was starving, and why Peeta threw the bread to her.
    When a person wins the Hunger Games that person not only wins a lot of money but they win a huge expensive house (located in the Victor's village in their district) and they also win food for their entire district.
    Prior to Katniss and Peeta, Haymitch was the only living winner of district 12. It was very rare for anyone from district 12 to win the Hunger Games.
    There is a lot more, but I won't say it so as not to spoil anything for the next Hunger Games movie that you will be watching.

  • @orphanedhanyou

    The in book Peeta's leg injury meant he lost his leg but it was replaced by the capitol technology with a mechanical one. I think it's better for the shows pacing in the end because Katniss & Peeta are separated as they recuperate and only see each other at the interview with Caesar. Opening up another surprise that late in the film vs it wrap up more quickly have it more of a disoriented whirlwind feeling to put you in the shoes of Katniss & Peeta which I think works better for the film version. I'm sure a mechanical leg still isn't as good as a real one but the level of tech in this world is so great, I always took the loss as not necessarily that big a deal. Other comments I've seen say it doesn't give context for why Peeta isn't as good at various things in the next book, but I have no memory of it every being called out explicity or obvious in context that any situation in the next book came off as "yep def cause he haa a fake leg". If I remember correctly it really is barely mentioned again & doesn't affect the plot beyond Katniss knowing how much Peeta lost & that weighing on her.

    Yeah, they intervene, they kill trubutes (the dogs killed Thresh from Rue's district). The games are intended to show everyone the power of the capital. Not only can they execute your children, they can make your children kill each other. The games were never meant to be fair.
    They also contribute to animosity between the districts, and there is also restricted communication between the districts to avoid them coming together and forming a more powerful revolution. When Katniss tried to protect Rue and then honoured her body she made a big difference in potentially bridging ties and showing comaraderie between districts.

    I've said this in the past, but it's always true: Donald Sutherland (RIP) made a really good villain as President Snow. It's kind of the same paradox with Imelda Staunton/Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter: a delightful actor playing such a vile, despicable character.
    Also....RIP Rue.
    She did not deserve the fate she was given.

    The capitol city represents the affluent, psychotic, and disconnected from reality side of society, which is embodied in the left.
    The districts have been trampled on by the citizens of the capitol city, forced into submission, censored, starved and sacrificed for the entertainment of the government; this represents the political right side of society.
    Its starkly ironic that the narrative of the story is so blatanly obvious, yet still gets overlooked by the majority of affluent people in the world. Oblivious to the obvious.

    48:19 "Fun" Fact that I don't think is really brought up in the movies, just the books:
    The Hunger Games that Haymitch won, were the 50th, aka the Second Quarter Quell (learned from the comments that you've already watched the rest, so I know this isn't a Spoiler xD) and the specialty of that one, was that it had DOUBLE the Tributes, so Haymitch didn't have to survive against 23 other people, but 47... There is actually a great Fan Movie about it ^^

    It’s not explained in the movie of course but that was Katniss’s first time picking up and using a bow at the Capitol. She is more used to wooden or handmade bows instead of the fancy metal ones that the Capitol had. So she wasn’t used to it and that’s why she missed the first shot.
    The primary thing you need to know about her as a protagonist is that she’s a stubborn loner. She isn’t particularly friendly, especially to people in the Capitol, who she despises. It’s not in her nature to try to try to be a likable celebrity and frankly, considering the Capitol is to blame for her and her people’s suffering, a good impression being made on her oppressors is the last thing on her agenda lol.

    In the book, the author does a better job of explaining why tributes from the same district rarely team up together other than the career tributes from districts 1 & 2. If a tribute killed or caused the death their fellow tribute, then their families and even potentially themselves would have to live out their lives confronted on a daily basis with the family of the tribute who they killed or caused their death.

    Great reaction guys. Can’t wait for you to watch the entire series. It’s my favourite series of all time. The books are incredible too.
    The Gamemakers can use the arena against tributes. It’s just a reminder who is really in control. It’s a tv show. They are putting on an experience for the audience otherwise tributes could just hide for the entire thing. Using the fire, the dogs or changing the night/daytime is to force the fight between the tributes

    In the book Rues district send Katnis some bread. It doesn’t sound like a lot but it would have cost them a fortune. 🤍
