Thats a damn good motor. I helped someone move a whole house. Drove my car down to GA from PA. Had coil pack go out so got a vehicle dolly to tow my car behind he unit while amzn delivered what i needed to the destination. Put about 3500 lbs in the box plus my car weigh 3200 plus the tow dolly 750. Im sure it all weighed 23-25,000. Floored this baby going down I 85. It was cruising 110 hauling the car & was completely stable. Sure it was dangerous as heck but the motor happily pulled its a$$ off!

I recently did a long move with heavy load with one of these trucks. My tips:
    (1) Climbing hills with full load: When approaching a hill, give a lot of gas near the bottom to build up speed prior to hitting the foot of the hill. For shorter hills, you can probably get up without bogging down. With longer hills, at least you'll get up a lot further before having to floor the engine and only do some 40mph speed or lower while burning up your fuel at prodigious rates.
    (2) Descending hills with full load: ease off the gas a lot before descending the crest of the hill. Because if you approach with too much speed, the engine brake will likely come for most of the descent and waste a lot of potential energy. So, if the speed limit is 65mph, I'd even let off the gas and coast to 45mph to the crest of the hill and let gravity pull me down without getting into energy wasting engine braking. Every driver I encountered gave me room to do these maneuvers as they can see how large this truck is from a mile away.
    (3) Use a GoPro or Insta360 camera with built-in Bluetooth wireless live view on your smartphone when backing up. Can place the camera strategically for 3rd person side view and have your phone mounted on the dash. Ideally its best to have a spotter but the camera can do in a pinch. Can even have both spotter and camera. Do everything slowly when backing up. The side profile view for backing up was especially useful and probably better than a spotter.

If you're driving a large vehicle, particularly one without a rearview mirror, try to avoid reversing in a busy area. Making sure you have a way out ahead is always easier and safer than trying to find a way by backing out or making multipoint turns.

@@ericharrison619 Depends on the state what's considered "commercial". In VA it's 26,001lbs or more, A combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more if the vehicle(s) being towed has a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds, a vehicle carrying 16+ passengers, including the driver, or moving hazardous waste.
Exceptions are emergency vehicles, military vehicles, RVs and moving vans used for strictly personal use, and farm vehicles. So really anything outside of those 4 things, even if you're using it for personal use, would need a CDL if it fits the above requirements.

Just drove one of these a few weeks ago, it’s okay, but I hate that chime that all Fords have. The fun part was being stuck in snails pace traffic with a shitload of “z” racks and rolling shelves with folded shirts that we were moving back to our warehouse after packing up everything from a 15 hour shift at a air show in the summer heat. Ironically the shirts remained on the shelves all the way to the warehouse even after taking multiple turns at intersections. 🤣🤣🤣
One thing I must say, if your moving or using a 26’ in the summer heat, DO NOT TOUCH THE ROOF, I learned the hard way by almost burning off my fingerprints. The roof underside gets so hot, you can almost most likely make a omelette on it.

Surprised U-Haul doesn’t request/order or install backup cameras on these despite there being no regulation for commercial vehicles. It would make backing up so much safer and easier for the average driver. They could install a rearview mirror with a backup camera display inside of it if they don’t want to have an infotainment system. 11:20 is such an inconvenience (and hazard) that would maybe make me consider looking for a different truck rental brand with a camera.
