  • Dahlias come in many colours and types; but not all types of dahlias perform the same way once you cut them! In this one I'm sharing my process for getting the best vase life from my dahlias, from harvest methods to post-harvest care, which dahlias to use and which I avoid. Tips, tricks, and a farmer florist foliage hack for you as well - because we never grow enough foliage for our flower arranging, do we? Let me know if you have any questions!

    Thank you for the videos. They are well done and just the right length. I really like the idea of using dahlia buds and leaves for filler.

      Thank you so much for your feedback! Using dahlia foliage is a great way to save time and it is a lovely foliage in its own right!

    Super helpful thanks a bunch!! I have not tried hydration solutions or flower food yet. I did hear that using a sharp knife vs snips extends the vase life so trying that out now.
    I've really been wanting Labyrinth it's totally stunning. So far my best dinnerplates are Penhill Watermelon and Sherwood Peach! Not too bad of a vase life and people just go crazy for them.

      Definitely, sharp knife or sharpened snips. Water treatments are super helpful because they change the pH of the water to improve water uptake. Labrynth is actually a pretty good one, I can get 4 days from her. That’s great to know about your two varieties! I made the mistake of growing Breakout last year and it starts melting as soon it thinks it’s about to be cut 😂😂

    Marie, I am curious what flower food and conditioner you recommend? Also, if you listed products you use with affiliate links you would likely have another potential income source.

      You know, I’m not really partial to any particular brand. I do use the Quick Dip product and I’m not sure they there’s an equivalent competitor product on the market for that one. The hydration solution and the flower food I have are shown in the video; but as I mentioned, I’m not particularly partial to any specific one, the two major manufacturers are Chrysal and Floralife. One thing I would say about the flower food I’ve used in the video is that it does create a bit of a visible residue which isn’t great for vase work and I’d be trying a different one in the future; but, for flower performance it has been good :)

    Marie, thank you for the video. I am currently getting my supplies for the season. I realized that Floralife has updated their product line. There is a Hydraflor 100 and the Floralife Express Clear 100. Which one would you recommend for Dahlias? There is a $50 price difference between the two of them. Thanks!

      Hi Maru, I have never used Floralife Express Clear 100 so I can’t speak to it from personal experience; but one benefit I’m noticing with that one is that it looks like you can leave your flowers in it for up to a week(?) versus Hydraflor which is for short term hydration. This would be a great question to ask of a Floralife rep :)

    You had your dahlias out of water while trimming and processing. How long have they hydrated first and how long can they stay out of water without affecting their vase life?

    • @floristsonfarms
      @floristsonfarms  6 месяцев назад +1

      That’s such a great question! The simple answer is that you can clean and grade right at harvest and then into water and into the cooler. If you are harvesting in certain climates, you would adjust your practices. For example, if harvesting in the rain or if plants are dewy they should be allowed to dry before going into storage. If it’s very hot in your area, you might harvest and store and then process later. My dahlias are not out of water for long - just minutes. But I think they could handle longer. Keep in mind, the stems are recut for a fresh drink right before they go back into the buckets with treated water :)
