Geoff is so good at music, but it always impresses me how good he is at storytelling too. That lamenting scene after John died is such a genius little moment. He could have just sung it like he did the rest of the song, but by changing the visual of the scene he made a much stronger story of it.

There is something about Geoff in a relaxed pose that shows off his physique while hitting ridiculously intense notes that just amplifies attraction.
Maybe it’s a previously-unknown form of hypnotism and we’ve all succumbed.

Like others have commented, watching you melt and/or become discombobulated has become one of my favorite new hobbies. I should drop and do a pushup every time you say "sir!" It would be a huge boost to my fitness goals. 🤣🤣
Kathy confirmed that the white tank top, jeans, and stool are the same they used in 16 Tons, as a deliberate Easter egg for fans, as well as borrowing Papa Castellucci's tools again. They filmed this in the storage space (an empty store) PattyCake rents at the mall near the studio because Geoff is brilliant when it comes to arranging but the silly man didn't think about the significance of 2/22/22 until he discovered every venue in town, including PattyCake, was booked on the day he planned to film.
Jimmy Dean (yes, the sausage guy) recorded a sequel to this song called Cajun Queen, in which she goes down into the mine and rescues her man. The opening harmonica sound is still used in some of the Jimmy Dean commercials. Big Bad John is an awesome song, and I love Geoff's rendition, but I can't listen to it very often. John dies an honorable, heroic death but he's still, y'know, dead. I generally like my entertainment to be a tad more cheery.

I'm not sure if you know, but Geoff narrarates audio stories too. From Edgar Allen Poe to The Little Mermaid, he's very good at it. Very nice to listen to him read you to sleep! 😊

They were having trouble finding a place to film and ended up having to move a bunch of “stuff” out of the way in the basement of the old PattyCake studio.
It was just he and Kathy. In the behind -the-scenes she kind of explains how they managed to get all those duplicate Geoffs filmed.
Geoff and his son William raided Papa Castelucci’s tool shed again. Those tools really get a workout. First in 16 Tons, then this, and he even stole the sledgehammer again for Seven Nation Army!

My grandpa loved these kinds of "miner songs" since he worked the coal mines during the Great Depression. So I grew up with his record player, Big Bad John, 16 Tons, Dark as a Dungeon, Coal Miner's Daughter, Working in the Coal Mine... between that and my dad's "trucker country music" ("Take Me Home Country Roads", "On the Road Again," lots of Kenny Rogers) these classics weaved through my childhood, and Geoff is just tugging those heartstrings with that warm, deep voice!

  • @DougRayPhillips

The original recording is by Jimmy Dean, 1961. Word on the street was that Jimmy was recording an LP and needed one more song to fill out the total runtime, so they just threw something together where he could mostly talk rather than sing. It ended up as the B side of a Single, and then it became a hit because radio stations played it rather than the A side.
Yeah, Jimmy Dean the frozen sausage guy. (I don't know if they sell his stuff in Australia or not.)
And here, 60 years later, the folks who hold the song copyright are making new royalties off it. Ya never know.

I recall hearing that the original OG recording said "One hell of a man" at the end, but they changed it to be more family friendly for it's time. It could just be a legend though.

    • @DougRayPhillips
      @DougRayPhillips Год назад +3

@@Mark_Agamotto1313_Smith That is true. They pulled the 45 with the original lyric off the market after a short time, and issued the revised version. If someone has a copy of the original release, it might be worth some dough. Of course, he still says "man-made Hell" in the revised version, but that's semi-literal whereas the other reference is completely figurative.

This arrangement was one that made me particularly appreciate Geoff's gift for harmonies. It really does seem like we're hearing three other guys chiming in with the person spinning the legend of Big John, rather than one singer dubbed multiple times. So much work goes into creating and blending all those beautiful vocal lines into a perfect chorus, it blows my mind.

Same here. During the depression my grandfather had to go work in the coal mines. So when this or 16 Tons came on the radio, we would get a little history lesson. I can’t listen to either of them without remembering some of the stories he had to tell. Most of the stories were pretty sad so this is always a mixed bag for me. Like the song but it stirs up a lot of sadness.
