Thank you for another priceless reaction to Geoff Castallucci. He just released a new solo cover of Sounds Of Silence ..please do a reaction.
Love the way he performs this. He just released his cover of The Sound of Silence...I highly recommend it
Gotta love how eerie it gets at the end. Love when Geoff gets spooky 👻 😍
The original recording is by Jimmy Dean but.....wow!
It took me a minute but then I realized he is singing all the back up vocals as well 😲 Amazing voice and range!
It's a song that is both true and schmaltz at the same time - and Geoff brings the feelings.
He is so talented, and his range is phenomenal.
have you seen his cover of 16 tons it has a similar vibe and it’s also amazing
❤🏴
Amazing
If you like this you will love his version of 16 tons.
Took we Geoff fans a solid year of begging him to do a cover of this Jimmy Dean song. Even his mother and his mother-in-law kept after him to do this one.
"Big Bad John" was originally performed by Jimmy Dean, who wrote and composed it. It was released in September 1961. He later became known for breakfast sausage.
Actually, it was first done by Tennessee Ernie Ford.
@@capttheo1 Interesting. Do you have a reference for that? Like @CindyNavarro said, I always thought it was first released by Jimmy Dean, and everything I've been able to come up with seems to substantiate that.
No, Tenneese Ernie Ford recorded Sixteen Tons, but not Big John. The song was written by Dean on the back of an Airlines bording pass during a plane flight. Dean was friends with a big and burly actor named John which was Dean's inspiration for the song. The song was on the "B" Side of a 45 RPM record. Ernie Ford had a weekly Television Show and perhaps he sang it one of those shows.
He's such a good story telling singer as well. It's fascinating.
I can never hear this without being reduced to tears. The story always moves me and Geoff does a good job with it.
shamefully his wife is loosing her hearing! Tremendously talented!!!
Original was Jimmy Dean of the sausage fame. Another Geoff solo I particularly enjoy is Ghostriders in the Sky. And for VoicePlay I'll recommend their cover of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters as well as I Can't Make You Love Me and while you are at it their cover of the Beach Boys In My Room.
I've never heard this cover, but I have to say it cave me chills.
As everyone has said Jimmy Dean did this, also two follow up songs.
Little Bitty Big John
The Cajun Queen
The original by Jimmy Dean is a must listen!
So true!
Great song and a great reaction 🙂
Try Cajun Queen chapter 2 to this song .. HAKAD
Loved watching your reaction. Geoff's amazing. .... speaking of Boy Bands.... you should watch VoicePlay's Boy Bands in 5 minutes. It's hilarious, Geoff arranged it and there's plenty of his classic low voice throughout. (Though to be honest, sometimes I think he's even better when he's singing the classic bass guitar line!)
I actually think the story was told better and more chilling by Jimmy Dean. The simplicity he told it with didn't get all covered up by the beautiful (but maybe distracting) harmony's and baritone's. He just told the story against subtle accompaniments using meaningful pauses and inflection in all the right places. Hope you listen to it sometime. 😊 You can find a video here titled, "Jimmy Dean "Big Bad John" on The Ed Sullivan Show".
I agree. I think sometimes Geogg goes overboard on the deep base, because it does set him apart, but I think he's got a great voice outside of the extra-deep base, and would have worked better here just singing it in his normal voice.
His channel and he is a low bass singer. So the people who listen expect a bass cover.
If you don't want the bass you can enjoy the original.
He never just covers a song like the original and puts something from himself.
Totally agree.
@@RogCBrand Yeah, good call. I agree.
I understand. I rarely have a problem Geoff's or VoicePlay's covers, I think there's only one that I can't fully endorse, but it can happen that an old favourite is so loved that a very original redo can disappoint. This one I have no issue with.
Wow this goes way way back lol I remember this from the 60s you are really going back lol
If you react to Geoff's Ghost Riders in the Sky and read the accompanying notes you'll see the names all the Geoffs were given. The two other videos naming each Geoff is Elvis Presley's Way Down (1st one - name tags on their chests), and Folsom Prison Blues (3rd one - the numbers on their shirts correspond to the letters on a cell phone key pad).
Geoff handles the song beautifully. Harmonies were gorgeous. Geoff sings it. Jimmy Dean recited a poem to a musical background.
Jimmy Dean was the original. Huge Hit/Cross Over for Dean. And yes, the same Jimmy Dean of breakfast sausage fame
This is really good!
I believe the original is Jimmy Dean in the early 60s.
There have been other covers as well.
It reminds me(the title only)of two songs by Jim Croce that are definitely worth checking out.
It's more rock/folk
Big Bad Leroy Brown
You Don't Mess Around With Jim
Uptown got its hustlers, Bowery got its bums
Love this song I remember hearing Jimmy Dean sing this when I was a kid
I love the original of this song first time hearing this version it’s amazing!
R.I.P. JIMMY DEAN. FUN FACT...JIMMY DEAN BASED BIG JOHN'S SIZE ON ACTOR CLINT WALKER A REAL GIANT OF A MAN !
the only problem of his drops is that while they do show off his range, they don't blend well with the rest of the vocals and actually sound more like a belch and stick out more like a crack in the song.
When he's singing in his more natural timber, he has a lovely voice.
Love the original from Jimmy Dean. This one is great too
So glad to see you back with Geoff. I'll suggest his cover of Ain't No Sunshines, it is breathtaking and heartbreaking.
And watch for the one coming out in a week or so. Please!
Check out the original by Jimmy Dean
The original is by Jimmy Dean. This is good but the original is better in my opinion
My father is a "John". And he's 6'6". So of course this song was a staple of our lives growing up. Lol 😆
Yeah he does a great cover of this song, and I absolutely love his voice and everything I've seen him do, but I think I prefer the original to this. The original you get to understand more of the story. I mean you can understand it with this but it's just better in the original. In this you're listening more to his voice than the the lyrics. His voice seems to overpower the actual stories of songs. But boy I can get lost in his voice!!! ❤
The first record that I ever bought was, not the follow up to this, "The Cajan Queen" also by Jimmy Dean but a somewhat related record, "PT109" which also deserves a listen. By the way, on 11/22/2023 it will be sixty years since the day that my generation calls the day we lost our innocence.
I'd love to see you react to Geoff's cover of Ghost Riders In the Sky, or anything by VoicePlay!
Jimmy Dean wrote "Big John" and was first to record it.
Geoff is great but I prefer the original by Jimmy Dean.
Geoff has a tremendous talent however it just doesn't have the heart of the original by Jimmy Dean! My mother took piano lessons from Jimmy Deans mother so I may be biased! Thanks for your reaction.
Voice play survivor
This was originally released by Jimmy Dean in 1961. I think you would enjoy listening to Jimmy Dean.
This was a nice version but the original by Jimmy Dean really tells the story .
Jimmy Dean did the original. Just simple storytelling. I tend to get distracted by that low voice with Geoff. He’s awesome! But I’ll always go with the original.
While I really like Geoff's range & most of his catalog, I have to agree with a lot of other comments. The original version by Jimmy Dean gives a better story. The sequel Little Bitty Big John is a bit more upbeat.
I grew up with the original and never cared much for it. The story is too sad and the song was so plain, IMO.
I much prefer Geoff’s version. The harmonies make it less of a dirge and add so much beauty.
And it makes it more interesting. As a musician myself (no where near this level!), I love more complex arrangements. Basically, if I could have come up with it myself, then it’s not fancy enough.
I haven't heard this in years..This is great!!
Great voice. Fantastic remake but nothing beats Jimmy Dean's original version. You have to listen to it
A very powerful song /story about the mining times ....💔
There is a second part to this about Mrs. Big John. Haven't heard it in yrs.
So funny I just watched this with Jimmy Dean. Nice…
Sorry but they can't compete with Jimmy Dean on this song
Sorry but he isn't trying to compete. He doesn't need to. He won't do a carbon copy of a song. If he can't bring something new to the table, then he won't do the song.
Nothing like the original version, by Jimmy Dean
Geoff will never do an exact copy of a song so it's not surprising that it is nothing like the original. If he can't bring something new to the song then he won't bother with it. I love how he takes a song and makes it new again.
All other versions...this one included...pale in comparison to the version released by the Charlie Daniels band.
jimmy dean the sausage king sang it first
I liked Jimmy Dean's version of this song better than this.
