He decides what song to cover, arranges the music, picks out and records all the instrumentation/background sounds, records all the voice layers, edits all the audio layers together and sends them off for final audio engineering, concepts the video idea, picks and orders costuming and set props, rents a filming location, builds the film set, does the lighting unless he needs advanced lighting design which his band mate Eli does for him, films with his wife if stationary cam or with a camera man if steady cam, performs and directs, takes down the set, edits the video, designs the album/single art.... Geoff doesn't sing a cappella on his solo channel, but he does with his group VoicePlay 🙂
Also, Geoff does 95% of all the work himself, for the music and video. All he gets help with is the final audio engineering, and on some videos he needs help with a camera man for a moving camera, for advanced lighting design and advanced makeup. Everything else he does himself, with his wife helping him as production manager.

You've stumbled across an amazing artist. He has been singing professionally since 1997, his acapella group was renamed Voiceplay about 10 or 12 years ago. There have been member changes, so when you see someone in Voiceplay that you don't know, relax. We are a forgiving group and will let you know who's who.
Geoff only started doing solo work during the pandemic, so his catalogue is not as extensive as Voiceplay.
    Suggestions for Geoff:
High and Dry - the only piece he's done without truly solo, no Geoff clones or other singers. The range will have you shivering
Shenandoah - an American folk song, soothing and sweet

Welcome to the Voiceplay/Geoff Castellucci rabbit holes. I fell April last year and never looked back.
Voiceplay is known as both "The Theater Kids" of Acapella and "The Kings of Halloween". Because of their love of dressing up in costumes and entertaining in their videos. Geoff as well. As you can tell by my above list these guys are not afraid to go out of the box and sing anything.
They both released their new videos on Patreon Tuesday. So they should be releasing them to RUclips soon. We usually get to watch them there first for about a week. I'm on both of theirs and Pattycake Productions which is owned by Layne Stein the beatboxer and former member Tony Wakim. They also have a bunch of awesome videos they wrote and did everything with. Voiceplay and Geoff film at their studio.
I love Voiceplay because of several reasons. First their awesomely talented in everything they do. All of them. They do everything themselves from picking a song to cover to releasing it on RUclips. Direction, editing, concept, arrangement, lighting, costumes, production. The only things they don't do is makeup, cameras and audio mixing.
Also. These guys are all genuine. Ones you want as best friends and hangout with. I call them Goofballs. "Butter" is a great example of that. Watch them in the background.
If you want to know more about them I recommend checking out Huldra Draco channel. She is a huge long time fan and makes various informative videos about them. I learned a lot from them.
    The present members are...
Geoff Castellucci - Bass. Founding member. 1997.
Layne Stein - Vocal Percussion/Baritone. Founding member. 1997.
Eli (ellee) Jacobson - Tenor/Rock Tenor. Joined 2010.
Cesar De La Rosa - Baritone/Tenor. Joined 2021.
They do collaborations with various artists for the 5th. So depending on the video is to who is in it. This is easy for them as they live in Orlando Florida. All used to perform at Disney World, Universal Studios or both.
Sorry about the rambling. I tend to do that when I'm telling about something or someone I love so much.

The Villains Lair series. They just released "season 2 episode 4 That's All" a few months ago. Maleficent and The Evil Queen have a nice little argument. Pattycake actors and actresses are extremely talented.
My favorite in the series is season 2 episode 2 with Oogie Boogie. Layne and Tony gave him a whole new song.
      On another note...
Meet Buddy in my profile picture. He's a skunk I used to have. He was my baby boy and emotional support animal. I miss him so much. Best pet I ever had. He will never go out of my heart. Skunks are similar to cats except they are hypoallergenic and they eat people food.

I love seeing someone hear Geoff for the first time. Even those of us who have listened to him for ages still get hit by the deep notes and how wide his range is (5 octaves) and an amazing ability to move up and down his range which is really tricky to do.
You aren't the first to compare him to a dragon and his speaking voice is velvet
For a less serious feeling song try the Monster Mash just to give you an idea of his range.
You definitely should try Voiceplay as well which is totally acapella at least virtually all the time anyway.
As others have said a Dragonborn comes (he definitely brings the dragon) and Halo are obvious gamer ones but honestly there are so many epic ones. One thing to keep in mind is they have had changes in their line up over the years and currently they have four members of the group and bring in a guest singer each time to make them up to five. Do for instance for Enermy (from Arcane, League of legends) (listen for Geoff going from low to high) , they bring in Alexa and in their most recent one Nothing Else matters by Metellica (which has broken many reactors) they have J None who is a ex-member who is currently in the armed and many hope will rejoin them when he finished that. They also have done a lot of Disney, most recently a very good version of We don't talk about Bruno.

It's always so much fun to see someone's first time hearing Geoff. He's more than just an amazing vocalist (5 octave range- you still haven't heard him sing high yet!); he arranges all of his own covers, from all the vocal lines to any instrumentation the track includes. He does this for half of VoicePlay's work as well (that's the a cappella group where he sings bass), with the other half being provided by VoicePlay's vocal percussionist, Layne Stein. Layne also co-owns a video production studio called Pattycake Productions, and Geoff shoots quite a few of his videos there. This particular set is known as the Villain's Lair and it features in quite a few Pattycake original videos, as well as yet another Geoff video- his cover of the Halloween classic, The Monster Mash.
Geoff's solo work gained a lot of notice when he released his cover of 16 Tons. It doesn't drop quite as deep as this song does, but it's such a smart, minimal arrangement, and Geoff executes it perfectly. One thing Misty Mountains lacks is any opportunity to display Geoff's remarkable vocal agility, even when he is surprisingly low- you don't really expect a bass to be able to perform runs, but Geoff doesn't listen to nonsense like that, and does it anyway. Other than that, I've got to second others' recommendation for Ain't No Sunshine, which is such a sublime cover, and House of the Rising Sun, which he reinterprets brilliantly.

This is amazing, I will most decidedly agree with you there. Another version of this song is done by Tim Foust and Peter Hollens. Their version is actually a capella...nothing but their voices. They have done many songs together, but in this one, Tim gets to show off his own range including the last note which blows people away. They both go high and low in it. Just in case you wanted to hear another version of this song sung low.

Geoff only started his solo channel during the pandemic lockdown, as a way to help keep busy and make a little extra money because his vocal group VoicePlay wasn't able to do concerts or tour. I believe his first video was Bare Necessities from the Disney movie The Jungle Book. He's been putting out content regularly since then, usually about 1 per month. And he does almost all of the work himself - arranging the song, performing the different vocals, producing, filming, performing (acting), and editing the video (although he uses the same audio mix engineer that many of the big a cappella groups (including VoicePlay) use, Ed Boyer). He gets some help with costuming, makeup, sets, lighting, all using the same facilities and people that VoicePlay uses for many of their videos. His wife Kathy is the production manager for both him and VoicePlay, and keeps things on track - which I imagine, with all of the different personalities involved in VoicePlay, is a lot like herding half-a-dozen cats.
Recommendations: Sixteen Tons, Blackbird, Till Then, Monster Mash
VoicePlay recommendations: The Dragonborn Comes (Skyrim), Halo theme, Enemy feat. AleXa, Nothing Else Matters, I Can't Make You Love Me, Little Mermaid Medley

Thorin the dwarf King sings this before they lesve to the forest of Erebor , but it is also sung by the Hobbits in the Fellowship movie, when they start out with Strider towards Rivendell. Geoff is beyond talented. The group he sings with is called Voice play and if you want dragon song, listen to their version of "The dragonborn comes" from the soundtrack of Skyrim. They even learn how to sing in Dovahul(witch is Dragon speak, from the game). Epic soundtrack.

Yes this song is from The Hobbit. And Geoff is so right for it. I loved your reaction. He gives us all chills. But he does have different, cheerier, songs. His range is amazing. The a capella group he sings with is VoicePlay. He does have a makeup artist, and someone he refers to as a beard wrangler but just about everything else he does. Although ex member Tony Wakim I believe makes a lot of the costumes for him and VoicePlay. Tony left the group to go behind the camera for Pattycake Produntions, which he and Layne, the beatboxer for VoicePlay, jointly run and own.

For the group VoicePlay: for drama I would suggest Hoist the Colours from Pirates 3 it Warriors, for fun I would recommend Boy Bands in 5 minutes, and for something totally different Grieg’s Hall of the Mountain King from the Peer Gynt orchestral suite.
Another one that has people shaking their heads right now is the cover of nothing else matters originally covered by Metallica. They don’t like to limit themselves to one genre!
Subscribing in hopes that you’ll follow through on covering Geoff and the band VoicePlay. VoicePlay has been around since Geoff and Layne were in middle school. Geoff graduated high school in 97 when they issued their first album under a different band name. The two of them, along with Earl who had been the high tenor for over 20 years started it all. They have had several personnel changes of mostly it’s been the baritones - they usually last about seven years.

Hey there! The algorithm popped you up on my feed because I watch a lot of VoicePlay/Geoff reactions. Loved your first time reaction. Looking forward to you doing more. If you are going to watch more of these, my one piece of advice is to always run the video back 5 or 10 seconds after every pause. The reason is that some of the most interesting stuff happens on a transition, and people tend to pause right at the end of a segment when a transition begins. If you just start the video up again, you sometime miss the most interesting bit because it takes your brain a second to get back up to speed.

You’ve already been given a lot of good information. I’ll add that - as good as Geoff’s voice is - it is well matched by the talents of the other members of VoicePlay and their featured artists. They often defy categorization. For example, one listed as baritone may sing the highest note, as in Dream On.
A little tidbit about the set: This was filmed at Pattycake Studios, owned by Layne Stein (VoicePlay’s beatboxer) and Tony Wakim, VoicePlay’s former baritone. This is their Villians Lair series set, and the finish painting on it was done by the set designer that did much of the work on Hogwarts Castle at Universal. You’ll see more of this set if you react to Dragonborn Comes/Skyrim by VoicePlay.

Welcome to being broken by Geoff (and hopefully soon by VoicePlay as well). One thing to keep in mind once you do listen to VoicePlay is that they often have guest singers and that their line-up has changed as different people have left. Geoff and Layne are the remaining founding members. Scott Porter was also a founding member and the original beatboxer but he left for Hollywood. You can see him perform in the Halo theme and in Sing. Layne took over as beatboxer after Scott left.
I believe the song was performed in The Hobbit after all the dwarves showed up at Bilbo's home but before they headed out for the adventure the next morning. Thorin Oakenshield was the main singer (heir to the dwarf throne of Misty Mountain). Richard Armitage was great in that role. I agree The Hobbit was not as good as LOtR, I really disliked the Legolas/Tauriel love arc did not occur in the book, in fact, Legolas was not in The Hobbit book.

I can't wait to react to some VoicePlay especially because im a huge halo fan!
Yeah I just felt like it lost something when all the CGI was added, LOTR felt so real and lived in and believable because it was! The Hobbit just felt like another CGI fantasy

An interesting fact about this song is that it's the movie adaptation of the original that was much more up beat and ment to be up lifting and was made for the lord of the rings/ hobbit cartoon can't remember the year give it a listen if you get the chance there's a big difference

Very enjoyable reaction! Geoff is super impressive and definitely does fantastic work on these videos. I'd suggest his video of Way Down (Elvis cover and very funny. Watch after the end for a small amusing bit.) If you turn on the closed captioning, Geoff sometimes includes little bits of humour in the captions as well. :)

Geoff has a whole bunch of great stuff on his channel. Please feel free to react to more. I'd also like to point out that there is another great base singer out there. His name is Tim Foust who also sings with the group Home Free.
Tim also covered this song with Peter Hollens. It's done differently than this version but is just as amazing! Even if you don't react to it, which you should, do yourself a favor and check it out for your own pleasure.
    Have a nice day! 😉is

Welcome to the Geoff Castellucci cavern! You say you're new to reacting to musical content. If I may offer a tip or two: your sound is very uneven, from the very loud opening, your sound drops dramatically when you talk and listen to the content you're reacting to. I only say this because many of us (knowing Geoff's depth of sound) wear headphones or in ear buds, and the wall of sound of your intro music had me tearing out my ear buds.
So far I like your reaction, and I saw from others in the VoicePlay / Geoff community that you now know some more about him, such as he doesn't compete with his group by doing a cappella works on his solo channel.
You will have a lot of content and engagement from our community if you continue to react to Geoff and VoicePlay!!
