    TimsComputerFix...
    In this video I show how to properly troubleshoot an Alienware X51 gaming computer that does not power on. In this case it turns out to be a bad video card. There are many other scenarios and factors that can come into play so this is not the only way to troubleshoot your dead Alienware computer however this was the issue with this particular computer. If you're in the Savannah Georgia area stop by and say hello.

    Tim, thanks for going through:
    WHAT the problem was, and
    HOW you solved it.
    Thanks to you, we ended up:
    removing the video card,
    leaving the adapter in,
    using the HDMI port up above (at 11:39) to connect our monitor, and
    were able to use the X51 computer without the video card (works for our needs!).
    You just saved a perfectly good computer and God knows how much of our time and effort. Keep it up with your excellent videos!

      I tried using the hdmi port above, and did the same as you, but for me there is nothing on the screen. I just dont understand. Do you think the adapter is faulty?

    Big thumbs up! At first I didn't think this tutorial would help me, but the "select another HDMI" hit the jackpot. Thanks. The next challenge is creating a partition on a fesh SSD......

    Thanks for sharing this video Tim. I love the diagnostic process and like to see how different techs approach a problem. This is the first time I've seen a system with a converter card for the GPU.

      its because of the itx form factor they had to put the gpu in at an angle because they didn't have enough room also its called a riser card.

    I really enjoyed this video. I have an X51 and have been dealing with this problem for 5 years. I think you are lacking some information that would help you make a better diagnosis. 1. Windows updates increase the likelihood of this issue dramatically. 2. To get the video to start and for it to boot, unplug everything except 1 monitor and 1 mouse and the power. Within 1-4 tries with power draining in between it always boots.
    One caveat, my X51 doesnt have HDMI integrated besides the video card.
    My video card has no trouble with running games with settings turned to high.
    Curious how those details might help you enhance the diagnosis.

      Well in this case just having the video card installed kept the computer from even turning on. As soon as the video card is removed the computer at least powers on. So the card in this situation is 100% at fault.

      @@TimsComputerRepair Yes I see what you're getting at. My situation may be different. I have a rubber plug where you have the integrated HDMI. This calls for an experiment. Where do I get one of those test cards and adapters?

    Hey buddy I have X51 R2 and it died completely.
    No reason when to turn it on and nothing. I've stripped it down and checked everything that I can see and no joy.
    Taken all graphic cards out, ram out and both SSD drives and no power to anything at all.
    The power pack shows green light I've even taken apart the front power switch and nothing.
    Any ideas

    I need urgent help please. I have an Alienware R4 from 2012. It has Windows 7 on it and I've not added any new software to it for a few months and I don't use it for gaming. Yes I know it's old but it normally works fine. I must add, I think the CMOS battery is dead as I have to keep setting the time and date, so I don't know if that is causing my problem. I do also have dust inside the PC too, though like I say, it normally works fine. I have a big problem now that it won't turn on properly and there is still a black screen on the monitor. The other day it started up fine. I got ready to start doing some work on video editing software I got. It was ok for a few minutes, then it turned off on its own. Ever since I have tried to start it, the fans whirr up as normal, to a high speed then slow down. Then you think it's going to carry on starting up but it doesn't. There's the click sound then it turns off. Then it starts going through that cycle over and over again of the fans starting up, the click and it turns off. It doesn't stop this until you do a forced shutdown by pressing and holding the start button. When it is doing all this, none of the lights light up on the PC, the alien light doesn't light up and the hard drive light does not light at all. It doesn't even show a flicker once. I have had this before over the years, but I would leave it off for a day then it would start again ok, but not have it do it this long before. Could it be the power supply or a bad connection in the power supply. Where i keep the computer, it's in a kind of cubby hole in a room, so I have to move the monitor out 12 inches to use it each time and this moves all the cables to the computer including the mains power cable. I notice the power cable plug in its socket in the back of the computer can be moved side to side a fair bit. Is this normal. Please help if you can.

      How did ypu fix this? I have the same problem right now...

    • @MrBooojangles
      @MrBooojangles 10 месяцев назад

      @@goranbrega8159 it was a very simple thing in the end. At first I thought it was because my cables in to the back of the computer are a bit squashed against the wall where I have it and I thought it was putting too much sideways force on the plugs and sockets on the back. That didn't fix it. We checked all the cables in the monitor and that didn't fix it. In the end, all it was, was the battery inside the computer had died. You got to take off the side panel and I think we had to remove a drive and a panel to get to it. It was a long time ago when we did it, so can't remember exactly what we removed to get to it. Once you take the side panel off, it's on the other side panel, around the centre of it. It's only a penny sized watch type, button battery. But once it was changed for a new one and everything put back, it all worked fine again.

      Good question but I use this cable on a regular basis with other computers. I have used the hdmi cable recently with no issues. Funny because I tried another test card and on that machine and the hdmi did not work on that one either.

    When you say we have a bad video card you actually mean the video card adapter? To me it seems like the video card adapter hdmi function is bad not any of the video cards.

  • @davidlightman3327

    My opinion, it's a proprietary design , not worth fixing You are assuming the traces on the riser board will be compatible with the test video card, something you should not do since you could destroy that board You should be careful doing what you are doing , since you could destroy the motherboard which would make your responsible

    • @TimsComputerRepair
      @TimsComputerRepair  4 года назад +1

      The way I see it there is nothing special about the design on the original video card that connects to that riser card. Won't make a difference with another card. 15 years of owning my shop and never carelessly blew a motherboard. Thanks for commenting.
