Is a Six-Year-old Alienware X51 Gaming PC Still Worth Buying?

  • Alienware PCs generally range from expensive to very expensive but if you find a second hand one like my X51-R2 here, then you can get the brand name for less money.
In 2014 this $700 or so configuration was the weakest in the Alienware lineup, so how well has it held up, and can it be upgraded?
    Thanks for watching :)

Same, I always imagined how awesome it would be to own one of their over 2000 $ systems. Now I know better and build my own rigs. Alienwares nowadays are a total ripoff, you get the cheapest blower design GPU they could find, a weird alienware branded motherboard with the absolute minimum spec VRMs and a pathetic cooler. And as some have mentioned maybe even single channel ram at the lowest clock speed one could buy.

    • @AndrewSmall963
      @AndrewSmall963 3 года назад +2

Mine has the 330W block, which is about the same size as the 970 GPU shoehorned into it. Dimensions are critical, for example, the 1070 reference won't fit as it's about 2cm too long. An alternative is to get the AGA as that allows the smaller 12V adapter to be used solely for the CPU, and then run the GPU in a separate enclosure; it's no longer really a SFF at that point though.
Note the mobo is custom, with extra power stages to support the single 12V input (compared with the ATX 24 pin with multiple rails) and airflow is severely compromised, with a single 40mm input fan at the front into the GPU area and a CPU fan ducted to the outside. There's an extra sub-20mm fan over one of the power stages that must have been running hot.

Very happy. Oh and 500gb ssd with sticky tape on top of the disk drive. Velcro would be better though.

The outside design is OK, very console like, but the internals of these or basically anything Dell usually bother me. Love this! I have an X51 R1 that an old client gave me for free, that I've been slowly upgrading over the last few years with whatever components I can muster up for free \ cheap \ had already. As you stated, getting components that fall within the power limits has been an issue, especially since on an R1 it is recommended to buy the power board from an R2 if you want to upgrade to the 330 watt power supply, and at around 150 US dollars, I decided it would be best to just stick with the limitations.
It started as an even more basic machine than yours, with a third gen i3, 4 gigs of RAM and a GT 730. Since then I've upgraded it to an i7 3770, 16gb of Kingston HyperX, a 512GB SSD and an EVGA 1050ti.
It's actually impressed me multiple times with what I've been able to run on the machine, and it's become the perfect little living room PC. The only thing that's managed to elude me is finding the compatible Blu-ray drive for it at a reasonable price.
All that said, I really only recommend picking one of these up if you are buying one that is pretty much already maxed out components wise, and even then only had a reasonable price.

I bought one of these for a family member when they first came out, with an I7 and a gtx960. Over the years we upgraded the memory to 2x8gb Ripjaws, upgraded to a ssd, added a drive in the hidden m.2 slot, and upgraded the wifi/Bluetooth to 6. This version works with the Alienware graphics amplifier, which takes a full size standard power supply. I got one used, upgraded to a 650ps, and was able to get a rtx960 running after some effort. The amplifier takes a lot of load off of the x51s power brick, which we have replaced twice over the years. The system still holds up well, though the bulk of the accelerator kind of negates the x51s small form factor.

I just upgraded from one of these last week. It last me 7 years and only had the GPU upgraded to a 1050ti 3 years ago because the power supply couldn’t handle anything more. I had to get a new machine because this one would crash / bsod constantly, would fail to boot (the fans would spin up and lights would come on and then it would power off before repeating this until I stepped in), and the 8GB of ram wasnt cutting it anymore. Rest in peace X51 from 5th grade. Me and my new rig will remember you when I’m off at school :’)

I have the XPS 8700, it's essentially a step up from this... I have an i7 4790 and it came with the GeForce 745.. I didn't keep it long as I upgraded it to a Radeon r9 270+ then to a GeForce GTX 1060, I can openly say that if you upgrade that to an i7 and a 1060 you'll be able to run most games smoothly at 1080p.

My daily system is an Alienware X51 R2 with an i7-4790 liquid cooled, 16GB ram & an ASUS GTX 1070 Turbo with the 330W power brick. This is about its max configuration and it is a VERY capable system running everything I play at max such as BF1. The X51 R2 is a very nice, underrated system. :-)

I own a X51 R3, with i5 6400, 8gb DRR4, 480 GB SSD, and a GTX 970. I built another PC to replace my X51 R3 about a year ago. I love the small size, needed a small computer with full size specs. I didn't have the room at the time for full size tower. Dell removed the disc drive from the X51 R3. It still pretty good 1080p system for the games that I played on it. My X51 R3 costed 400 US dollars in late 2018.

I overpaid for an Alienware R1 (about $260 USD) with an i3-2120, 8gb DDR3 and a GT645. I ended up swapping out the i3 for a Xeon E3 1245 (no issues at all! Just plug n play. It was about $30 USD and it’s basically an i7 2600 with ECC memory support for about $65 less on the used U.S. market), added another 8gb dim for 16gb total, and managed to get a GTX 1060 FE in the box for about $150. While yes, I did overpay ALOT, it was a worthwhile purchase because I needed a pc that would fit in a bookshelf and wanted something very compact but upgradable and versatile. It plays SW BF1 at 65-70 FPS, SWJFO at 60-65 FPS, and Halo Reach at about 90 FPS (all games at a mix of medium/high settings at 1080p). It’s a lovely 2nd computer for me and I have no regrets really.
Edit: Forgot to mention I also put in a relatively cheap ssd in it & I did a complete fresh install of windows for quick load times and a bloatware free experience

I have an Alienware X51 R2 (as a Secondary emulation and gaming machine) with i5 3470, 12 GB DDR-3, I swapped the CD/DVD Drive with an SSD caddy and added a 120 Kingston Hyper X+500GB HDD. The graphics card is 1050ti. The gaming experience on 2K is pretty decent. Moreover, the power supply can be upgraded to a 330watt and GTX 1070 or 1660 can also be used moreover the system has a power delivery daughter board inside which may or may not support a 330-watt power brick. Overall it's a pretty nice console-sized PC. BTW love your videos, keep up the good work.

My first modern PC which I bought at the start of 2014: i5 4440, 2x 4GB DDR3 1333, GTX 650ti OC 2GB, 1TB WD Blue. Still pretty decent to this day and it cost less than the X51, though the motherboard had to get replaced in 2017.
I had to specify the 650ti as they were calling it a gaming PC despite the lack of a graphics card. Probably the best lived part, as it matches a GT 1030 in performance while having NVEC. Still my favourite graphics card even having owned a GTX 970, and currently a GTX 1070. Going from a Quadro NVS 110M, it was a big deal.

    I actually bought a Dell XPS 8700 6 years ago for around £700 and that had a i7-4790 with a GTX 745, 16GB DDR3 at 1600MHz, a 2TB HDD, a crappy 460W PSU and a godawful stock Intel cooler.
It's had quite a few upgrades since:
GTX 1070 (might be upgrading again to a RTX 3070 if I manage to get it)
1TB Samsung 860 EVO SSD (Windows installed here) + 2TB Crucial MX 500 SSD + existing HDDs
    Riotoro Enigma G2 650W 80+ Gold PSU
Arctic Freezer 33 eSport Edition cooler
Everything was moved into a NZXT S340 case. The old case was an absolute nightmare to work with and it got caked in dust so easily.
CPU & RAM remain as they were.
The 4790 is still a fantastic CPU even today and 16GB RAM is plenty.

I’m three years late to this video, but I bought a “top of the line” R2 unit back in 2014. i7-4790, 8GB DDR3, and I think a 760 Ti. I last upgraded it in fall 2019 with a 1660 Ti, 16 GB DDR3 and a 2TB SSD. I games on this machine all the way up to July 2023 when I retired it in order to build my own gaming PC for the first time ever.
Now we’re at the end of 2024 and I think I’ll give my X51 R2 a complete dust off both in and out, fresh install windows 10 and possibly re-paste the CPU cooler. Then I’ll sell it locally for like $200 usd or less. Hopefully it’ll find a good home.

If you replace the original power board (D0HY5) with the R2 power board (D85RT) and use the 330 watt power brick, it's possible to use 6 pin to 8 pin adapters and run the 1070 TI and newer.

They make great media PCs. Pair with a wireless keyboard/trackpad and hide behind the TV (they also sit horizontally if needed) and it can play movies, or casual games all day. With the 330W block, it can run a 970 as standard, or even 1070 blower with a minor case hack (the HDD might need swapping to a 2.5 SSD, and the front fan and Alienware head are removed).

Added a 128gb SSD for OS and going to use the 1TB HDD for the roms. Great use for any of the 240w psu versions as they are not worth paying £50+ for the better PSU. the alienware x51 r3 is my current gaming pc, and it still holds up well. i have plenty of room to upgrade. the 6th gen intel i5 can be upgraded to the 7th gen i7 when i need to, the 16gb ram and gtx 1060 are plenty powerful enough. the video card is a desktop one so i can upgrade it anytime i feel the need. the power supply and size limit of the video card are the only limitations. i find the 330w external power brick can handle a graphics card using up to an 8 pin, or around 160w usage. the graphics card length cant be past ~10 inches. if the one you bought came with the 180watt power supply, you have to buy the 330w if you upgrade the gpu
