Thank you very much for this video!! It appears I have been quite fortuitous with my timing but recently I dusted off my R1 from 2012. First on the list is upgrading the GPU and my only prior experience is a RAM upgrade on a Mac laptop half a decade ago. Your video has proven very useful!
I did a custom drill job where I took off the top lid, drilled holes with my smallest bit in the location where the heatsink was, took the whole chassis apart in order to put in a Noctua NH-L9x65 Low Profile cooler (The chunkiest one you can fit), Flipped the fan to push hot air up/outward where the holes I drilled were, and repasted it with thermal grizzly kryonaut. Thing Keeps cool.
Upgraded my Alienware X51 R2 some time back. Current build: I7-4770 cpu, HyperX Fury DDR3 1866 C10 2x8gb ram, Samsung 860 EVO 1TB, and an AMD RX470 4GB video card. All using the 330w power supply brick. It is not my main gaming PC, but fills in the role of home/office PC pretty well for me.
i did upgrades to mine before the prices went through the roof. i put in a 1660ti blower style under 275 bucks. runs great for the amount of power needed is power efficient.
I have an X51 R1 too, and I upgraded it with a GTX 1070 & a 1tb ssd. I can’t play games at high settings because it’ll crash my X51. I would like to upgrade the cpu cooler with a Noctua low profile cooler and replace the small case fan with a Noctua fan. Come to think of it, perhaps a GTX 1060 would’ve been a wiser choice since it consume less power than the 1070. Good video, sir.
Can confirm that I’ve had a 1060 running in mine for a few years now, works perfectly. I went ahead and undervolted the card just because I wanted to, but even without there are zero crashes in my usage. I like the idea of replacing the coolers-hadn’t really thought about that. At times this little beast can sound like a jet engine taking off, I bet updated coolers would make a world of difference!

@@retrotech2020 Thanks for the response I thought that may be the case after having a look inside after posting my original comment.
