What I love about the Blood Hunter is how it has a crazy amount of backstory points like Warlock. It could be more fun as a DM to really write up all the lore behind their Orders. It would be so fun if Mr. Mercer would allow WotC to make subclasses or if he made more subclasses. I'd really enjoy seeing further lore to the BH Orders.
my character's backstory in short was he wanted to become a warlock but the demon betrayed him and killed his family. he was then adopted into the order and is on a hunt for revenge
I am currently playing a Lycan BH. They were a halfling that was kidnapped and transported to a secret location. While within that location, they were succumbed to brutality as the ritual was being forced on them. Not sure how long it was, but the group forced the completion of the ritual on my character. Something surprising happened as they turned into a full werewolf, broke free of their theirs and began to rampage across the countryside for yet another unknown amount of time. They woke one morning with their sanity back, though the memory of their rampage was like a vague dream. They look like they are half lycan (Using Tabaxi racial) and when they use their hybrid form; they go full werewolf. Playing the character as a trophy hunter. Always going after the biggest prey and taking trophies from creatures after they kill them.

A were-hybrid subclass that contains a hybrid of barb and monk features. Love this! Really would love to RP "hulking" out just before battle and then shooting a look at your friends and saying, "Don't stay close to me!" :)
So being a part of the Lycan class as a Blood Hunter has a lot of advantages but assuming that you don't transform on your teammates and get a bad roll to keep your bloodlust under control, Because I kind of set up something similar and my character went out of control and I accidentally eliminated one of my allies by accident 🤣

Something to consider with Lycan is how the features can express other, non-Lycanthrope monster fantasies. Play as a Dhampir, it can be an enhanced vampiric form. Play as a Hexblood, it can be like an Annis Hag transformation. Lots of ways to use these mechanics to play with different ideas.
I used this subclass once in a oneshot, I was a goddamn Goliath weregorristro and my dm was having the time of his life with a blood thirsty half giant half demon
It's worth noting that the magical unarmed strikes from Improved Predatory Strikes is when you have _any_ Crimson Rite active in your hybrid form. It does not specify that the rite has to be on your unarmed strikes. If you want, you can put that rite on a bow, and your unarmed strikes will still count as magical. Since the PHB errata specifically notes that two-handed only matters when you _attack_ with a two handed weapon and not just when you're holding it, you can do unarmed strikes in melee and fight with a bow at the same time. Granted, there's no reason why you would want to leave it off your unarmed strikes, but if you've been caught out by surprise you do have the option to pick.
Currently playing a Harengon lycan and having a blast with it! Actually the party tank. I ended up buying a dancing scimitar which is awesome when combined with hybrid transformation and the dodge action.
Blood hunters are, in my opinion, action economy nightmares. They have so many options that I think paralysis through analysis can be a problem if you aren't an experienced player. I have yet to play one, but if I do, I will go werewolf (or lycan, whatever) or mutant. Because who doesn't like The Witcher?
I would also love to see you guys make a generic build with your videos so we can see what a character could be like. Not necessarily optimizing, but just having something to level up and show us the character sheet.
The lycan also requires quite a bit of set up to fully come online. Unless your DM allows you to use your action to use a bonus action ability. If not, it takes 3 turns to transform and get both arms to use your blood magic. Then you can use your curse afterwards. So 4 total turns to use all pieces
The lycan rules count both hands as one weapon. Cast crimson rite ONE TIME to make all unarmed feral strikes magical. But yes, even with that, the lycan bloodhunter has the bonus action pulled in too many directions.
I'm currently playing the lycan blood hunter mixed with shadow monk and love it. I'm only lvl7 (3monk 4BH) but in a few levels I'll be a werewolf jumping out of the shadows and clawing things to death.
I don't like you don't get a second use untill level 11. We've tried house-ruling it to be used proficiency bonus times per long rest, but with the DC to avoid going nuts increasing by 1 each time you use passed first use. Difficulty increase resets after a long rest. We like the lore in that. It becomes more and more difficult to control the beast each time you indulge it.
Thanks for the videos guys, i have a monster campaign starting soon and need ideas, you're giving me a lot to think about.. My character is already a sort of genetic experiment, elf/dragon mix.. complete with scales wings tail teeth, etc but is bipedal and high functioning however fighting not to give in to the savage side.. however he also has the ability to add DNA mods collected from enemies felled so he has incentive to be more savage and give in and be a sort of a serial killer looking for new powers.. so hot damn this class seems amazing, being able to transform and go beast mode as a weredragon.. and the bloodlust mechanic was already something I was working on so having it here already fleshed out... perfect. If I don't go with this I think I'll be doing undead patron warlock and use a dracolich in my backstory so the dread form transformation as a similar affect, and add the some elements of this to it.. or maybe I'll do both😊 Thanks again for everything!
Bloodlust seems like it's intended to nerf an otherwise kinda overpowered subclass. But if you have a decent Wisdom score and take the Resilient feat to get proficiency in Wisdom Saves, you could easily get your Wisdom Saves to a +7, so even on a Nat 1 you'll still meet (and therefore beat) the DC 8, effectively rendering yourself immune to Bloodlust.
Made a Lizardman blood hunter that turns into an eighteen foot weregator....Soo much fun...he's super smart, but plays dumb to his advantage. His favorite intimidation technique is to bite off the hand of the person who has the information....
Unfrtunately no, you cannot use your bonus action unarmed strike in werewolf form when you use weapons, but the dfference in damge at low levels is mostly at 1-2 damage higher than a longsword with duelist fighting style, for it doesn't worth it when you also hold a shield, on higher levels where your predatory strikes become a lot stronger and you haven't found a stronger weapon then unarmed combat is a lot better, claws and shield anyone ?
I've been playing a profane soul, and other than the limitation of medium armor (and my foolish choice of gwf)... Easily the highest damage dealt in my party, I'm talking 32-38 damage every turn at level 5
I wanted to play a lycan so badly for my first level 1 - 20 character but I will say with more understanding of the game the hype has dropped a bit. Though I'd love to hear anyone's multiclass ideas
Hmm. I feel we really need a hunter class or subclass. Ranger being a general all-rounder really doesn't mesh with the super specific hunter stereotype bloodhunter delivers.
Lol halfling were duck bill platypus lmao I orginally thought bloodhunter,especially lycan, was just made for Shifters. For rp it's a way to deep dive into the characters lycanthrope heritage. Now I think that way but..... Shapechanger or whatever that race name is. Would be interesting.

Well you can be in the Lycan form for an hour so you can have it up before combat

I'd say a nat 1 would still render your bloodlusted. It's more of a critical fail than the actual number it represents. Depends on your DM though

I remember the 90's and have no desire to see D&D get a Samuel Haight type character.

This has gotten a lot better after they allow you to choose int or wisdom for your hunters bane stat

Unarmed fighting should of been offered, change the damage in the claws from d6 to d8, and the later die to a d10. Would of made a lot more sense
