Thank you so much for keeping this video posted! I just got an E-M1 and a 12-40 f2.8 lens to try out mirrorless and micro 4/3. I have my camera in front of me as I watch this video. It has been incredibly helpful, and I'm thinking of selling all of my DSLR gear and getting on board with the OM system. Again, thank you for keeping this video alive! It has been very helpful.
this guy, not only just helps with everything you need to know to understand the basic to moderate depth of functions on your camera but he talks to you like a human and doesn't act like a arrogant professional photographer talking too you like you should know every dial and setting. i cound listen for 12-14 hrs no problem and will definitely getting his books/dvds to understand more about how my camera works
You are the only person I can listen to all the way through a video. I love my E-M1 and you manage to make sense of all the little things I get stuck with. Thank you for just getting on with it without waffling and for helping me out more than you'll ever know...
Superb job of explaining clearly this incredibly complicated camera. I've owned the camera for months, cursing it, and now I GET it. Next, I might start to like it!
A comprehensive and well thought out primer on the OM-D E-M1. Small details like dealing with the rear (main) control wheel first and then the front (secondary) wheel second, while running through menu options, helps in associating the position of the dials with the placement of the on-screen options. Well done!
thank you very much, I just purchased a second-hand em-1 and am brand new to photography. I had no clue how to operate this camera and upon stumbling on this video I am now loving it! You can present anything and I would watch it ha your presentation skills and voice are very soothing!
If you own this fantastic camera this is the ultimate review, Tony simply does an excellent job. I have been back several times to refresh my knowledge, 5*.
Thanks for a great instruction video. I've had my E-M1 over a year and you've shown me 6 options that are available I was unaware of that I find very useful. Tony, you've taught this old dog some new tricks!
HI Tony thanks for the tutorial. I have had my EM-1 for a year and yet you still taught me plenty. I have been happily 'snapping' since the 60's and have had many cameras over the years. I love this camera and (almost) everything about it. Powerful, compact, water resistant and so adaptable. I'm taking the best pictures I ever did and having bags of fun too. Again, thanks for the tutorial - love your style, and of course, your missus is very easy on the eye too! Please keep it coming!
I might have missed it, but I feel you didn't cover the thumb switch that swaps between settings that the 2 main dials control - in A mode, which I love to use too, the main thumb dial does aperture, and the forward index finder dial does exposure comp. But if you flick the switch under the mode dial down from 1 to 2, the thumb dial now does white balance, and the forward dial does ISO adjustment, which is considerably faster to change than going through the menu! (again, sorry if you did point this out and I missed it!)
Thank for this video. Felt so frustrated with my inability to fully utilise my EM1 camera however now feel much more confident. I need the show tell and do learning with which your videos are brilliant. I find other speakers go so fast i lose concentration. Really looking forward to learning more.
Thank you for this video. I have been using my E-M1 for nearly a year now and really love using it. Even so, I still picked up some useful information from your comprehensive overview. One thing I would like to see is some information on using the Live Time and Live Comp modes.
hi i purchased the E-M1 and find it superb i would like to thank Tony for his E-M1 tutorial as i was struggling to use some settings on it now i am happy as i can set it up correctly thanks
Just watched this video and I must say. It was fantastic. I not only learned about my camera, but lots of general stuff as well. I will be watching other ones as well and getting your books too. Thanks and Great job!
Another great thing about the E-M1 is with a cheap $30. adapter you can use all of the superb 4/3 lenses from the defunct Olympus DSLR system. These lenses are built like tanks and some are better than the best current m4/3 lenses. My fav is the 12-60 f2.8. Greater range and equal or better IQ than the 12-40 at 1/3 the price. The 50-200 f2.8 is also superb. You can't even get anything in that range in the current lens lineup and it's only about $300. on ebay.
Tony & Chelsea. Thank you guys for this wonderful tutorial. I keep on coming back to this video. I find your book easy to understand and the videos compliments the book well.
Thanks for this. Very helpful even for those of us who have used Olympus DSLRs before. By the way, SDP at $10 is the best money I have ever spent on photography. Get it!!
As a fan of the 4/3 format, and user of the E-M1, your video offered the chance to learn about the camera. I did, thanks. There is one point of disagreement. The USB port has a couple of important uses. It is the only way (that I know of) to update the firmware, and connecting a remote trigger (which is covered in the video later on). Because this occurs early in the video, it jaundiced my opinion about what I might learn, until the later stages where insights into the various menu options provided real value. rdv
Thank you for the great video. I recently inherited my fathers EM 1 and this video has gotten me through the navigation of the camera. I'm mainly a Canon shooter and the menu system is quite different, for me. Thanks again!
"Again in Stunning Digital Photography. ...." It is cool that you're proud of your work. Sometime you remind me of Me. In the early '80's I workdd form a small publishing company on a book based on the TI994/A computer. Unfortunately the book didn't get out.
Thank you for this. By far, the most enlightening video for this camera. I’m just learning so I refer to it often. Easy on the eyes doesn’t hurt either. Haha!
New to the channel, which I have thoroughly enjoyed and have benefited greatly from, BIG Thank YOU to you and the team!!! The book is amazing full of knowledge that would otherwise take a lifetime of acquiring, thank you! question: OM-D E-M1 Mark II Olympus, when will there be a video out about it? Thank you in advance for your reply and ongoing content!
For post processing RAW images, apart from Lightroom and Picasa, there's an open source software called RawTherapee which is a free clone of Lightroom. Thanks for a great introduction to E-M1. I love this camera.
Solid video and I certainly appreciate the work you put into providing this resource. Unless I missed it, you failed to cover the live bulb mode, however. It is worth noting that feature specifically during the bulb mode section as it makes bulb mode far more usable.
Thanks a lot . . . about ready to buy a camera and the E-M1 is currently among the finalists along with the E-M5, the X-T2 and the 80d. Really wish the X-T2 had a touch screen, it would be a buy it today otherwise! The only thing holding me back from the E-M1 is the price - I can afford it but sheez (2 freakin grand!), am I that serious about photography and thus the E-M5 in the mix? Again, thanks . . . so thorough and pleasantly done. Rachel
Great video as it seems are most of yours i have watched to date. I am finding however the internet little links you are mentioning are broken which is a shame for further follow up. Just bought your book "How to Create Stunning Digital Photography" and looking forward to reading and learning fro it. Many thanks.
Great video Tony. I know you can't cover everything (I'm sure you'd rather not post six hour tutorials) but wondered if you tried the Super Control Panel and the Live Composite mode? I know you love night photography and the Live Comp seems great for that. Thanks to you and the rest of 'Team Northrup' for the fantastic content.
Andrew Hewitt My thoughts to Tony Northrup also. Overall, it took time and effort to present the video professionally and clearly so kudos on that. A few things that I thought might have been better to emphasise (although they might not have fit into the syllabus of the books) 1. Tony uses the Point and Shoot style menu a lot in this video. Olympus has two menus - the menu in the form of the vertical strip on the RHS (Point and Shoot Style Menu) which they chose so that people who migrated from those cameras would feel at home - and the Super Control Panel - which to many veterans, is less confusing because it is in-your-face and shows you not just the menu but the status of of the settings - the OM-D series makes effort to offer this SCP as a preferred alternative. 2. Tony talks about a wired remote control for Bulb etc... That's about an old an idea as the PC Flash Sync port - most people for long exposure, intervalometer, timer etc... nowadays use the OM-D built in facilities - the camera's nifty and small, carrying a wired remote control isn't as cool or vital anymore. 3. It's hard to decide what's icing on the cake vs a serious feature so you can't speak about every feature. But it's worth discussing Live Time and Live Composite - they're so integral to the Olympus way nowadays. 4. In discussing raw software like free Picasa or a paid one, it's worthwhile mentioning Olympus Viewer 3 that is also free and has been much admired in its ability to produce really good JPEGs and TIFFs from Olympus raw files - albeit, a bit slow in rendering.
Thanks from another grateful E-M1 user. You are my favorite teacher, clear & concise. Question: You said LOW ISO has less dynamic range. I would think it's just the opposite. Generally the lower the ISO the less noise & greater DR, right?
George Stone 'low iso' is not native iso. It is iso 200 and overexposed one stop by the camera. You lose some dynamic range if you use 'low iso'-mode. But generally you are right: lower iso has less noise and more dynamic range.
Fantastic video- incredibly helpful! You mention scrolling down the screen to change to shooting in Raw . While I can do that with the super control screen (or through the menu after much scrolling)just fine, what I find when I try to do it in the open screen on the monitor with the functions down the side, that pressing up and down just makes the AF grid come up rather than moving through the functions. What am I doing wrong to make that happen and constantly keep coming up? Many thanks!
Hi Tony, thanks for all the great videos including this one. Q: 1. Why the 20mm 1.7 Panasonic over the Oly 12mm 2.0 or Oly 25mm 1.8, besides price? 2. Is the 20mm Pan sharper than the 12-40 pro? 3. What would you keep the Noise Reduction and Noise Filter setting on this camera? Also what setting for the IBIS? Thank you for your time.
Hi, I've just bought the EM1, and have been worrying about whether I am up to the challenge! Your excellent video has put my mind at rest, I think I'll be OK! I am also looking at buying a telephoto lens for wildlife photography. I would be interested in your views. I am looking at the Panasonic 100-300 as it is very lightweight and I would be hoping to handhold the camera most of the time. I am also looking at the new 100-400 Leica lensed telephoto from Panasonic, but it's very expensive and considerably heavier. What are your thoughts on this I wonder? Thank you, great video.
Most helpful overall tutorial and well explained. Are your video books updated recently including for the new firmware? Really interested in your view for someone like me who had moved (from sony as it happens) from the original M5 to the M1 and has a few excellent olympus lenses. But also the canon 5d Mark II with excellent glass. Given things coming out soon - like the Mk IV; the M1 II; the GH5, I am keen to assess what might be the optimal configuration to make best use of my existing investments but build on them for video in particular, wildlife, pet photography, corporate storytelling and youtube- amongst others.
Another great, informative video. Question for this 'forum' though.... Can anyone tell me if you can programme any of the customisable buttons to act as an easy toggle between ISO and AUTO ISO whilst in manual mode as this is an action that i find myself performing often.
This was a really helpfull video! I recently got this camera and even though i thought that i knew my way around the camera there were some things that i missed that you covered in this video! Right now i only have the 20mm prime but i kinda miss the zoom lens of my previous camera and i've had my eyes on the 12-40 pro lens. You mentioned in the video that it was overpriced at 1000$ but i managed to find it for about 500$ in my country new. would you still say that its overpriced at that pricepoint or should i be looking at other lenses?
That was fantastic - just new to Olympus and this is going to help me immensely - is the book aimed at the Olympus or is it photography in general please
Great job Tony. I have just one question and that's related to video. I'm used to cameras with zebra stripes that show precisely where in the frame there are areas of overexposure. This camera doesn't seem to have it (or even the newer Mark 2). Am I missing something here? Seeing the precise areas where the video is overexposed is very useful in determining if you want to control that area with exposure compensation or if a bit of overexposure in an unimportant area can be ignored.
Thanks, Tony. The discipline of technical training background comes through loud and clear. :) Curious, are you planning perhaps on doing a delta video on E-M10?
Tony, glad you included Olympus but not very informative… yes we know the camera has these features like every other camera. Would have been far better to discuss AF customization for still vs video (no mention at all of how af zones affect performance, recommendation about sensitivity, speed, etc), nothing at all about color profiles and customization of hue, highlight rolloff, etc). I could go on…
Hello, great video, I would like to know how to do record the audio for your videos, sounds excellent. I am trying with a microphone. Is there any wireless micro for the camera? Thanks again.
Tony, this might be the most annoying question ever, and for that I'm truly sorry..;) - but where are your shelves from; I've got some Ikea floating shelves and they sag like a ...well, I won't go there, but you get the picture. thanks for these videos, they really are a great resource and I always point Olympus newbies straight over to you. Regards, Andrew
Thank you Tony for your valuable presentation of EM-1. Just bought recently on sale (55% off the current price, with 12-50 mm) Truly this small machine, which the looks like a "transformer robot" is full packed with hi tech features, perhaps more than other competitors. It will bring out the best artist in you. Never thought I would have this unit because it was expensive then at the time it was launched. I would benefit to have the Olympus 17mm 1.7 rather than the 20mm 1.7 II, since Oly lens is engineered designed with the body? Would like to hear your thoughts and appreciate. Thanks once again. Regards to Chelsea! Wholesome couple!
Hi Tony, thanks a lot for this tutorial, I always turn to your/Chelsea's videos for help and information. Are you aware if the OM D EM 1 can be configured for high speed sync flash. If so, how is HSS achieved? I cannot find any reference in the menu. Thanks a lot.
Benjamin Peterson Get the bigger one if you're taller and you're not trying to cram it in a suitcase. I hate crouching over a tripod, though I do use shorter tripods for travel...
Hi Tony, I'm considering a new E-M1 with the 45 1.8 or a used D610 with an 85 1.8. Over here they're about the same price. Which would you get? I love landscapes and portraits, not doing sports but would like to get into weddings next summer, at least assist a few times and see where that gets me, maybe as a side job once I picked up some more glass. Which would you go for? Thanks
Hello I was camera shopping trying to upgrade from my Olympus e500 and I came across an M1 for 499 on b&h. I was looking at the m1 mark ii st bestbuy and it's really great but would I be better off buying the M1 and a fast lens or drop 1700 for the body with the m1 mark ii ?
Re: Flash Sync Socket Thanks for such a good, in depth review, but why spend a single second, let alone your multiple comments, putting down the flash sync socket? With that socket and a little cord, I can use every strobe I've bought since 1974 (I have 6) Furthermore, I can sync with the $80 light panel I purchased in 2014, without buying the $80 wireless remote :-)
I'm just beginning with the OMDE1. I'm working through your video tutorials Tony. I'm stuck on the shutter priority lesson because even though I've turned the top dial to S when I try to use the back dial to adjust the shutter speeds nothing changes. It's as if the camera is still in Aperture priority mode except on the screen it says S. Is there another chapter of your tutorials that I can go to to do a correctional set up of this camera? Thank you 😃
Hi tony, I use an em1 mark1 with all olympus m43 lenses, should I be worried or should I be doing a lens calibration, since to my knowledge this camera uses caf.
+mountainhobo Firmware Update 4.0, due to be released at the end of November 2015, will improve many features of the E-M1, one of them is adding colors and intensities to Peaking. Thank you Olympus!!!
Hi Tony, when I try to focus my camera, my E-M1 does not allow me to do a half-press when in iAuto mode. How do I change this to allow me to do this? Also, I am trying to select C-AF mode, however, when I press the AF button, in P Mode, it only allows me to select MF and no other option (they are all grey)? - How do I change this to select C-AF? Kind regards, Aaron

Thanks for a great instruction video. I've had my E-M1 over a year and you've shown me 6 options that are available I was unaware of that I find very useful. Tony, you've taught this old dog some new tricks!
The most professional video I have encountered. You clearly know the camera and photography. Thank you Tony.
+Remco din Thanks, and I'm glad I could help!
I agree, Fecking brilliant
Great instructional video. I learn things more efficiently being told what to do rather than reading a manual. This taught me a lot. Thank you.
Tony your training tutorials are the BEST on youtube.

Thanks Tony. This camera does so much that I learned a few things I didn't know by watching your video. Great video.

Great and thanks for tutorial Tony. I just got a Olympus Pen-F and this tutorial really taught me some of the standard Olympus feature settings.

Great intro to my new camera, and just bought your ebook of Stunning Digital Photography! Thank you for such a great review and excellent guidance!
Thanks! Enjoy!
Great tutorial/introduction however even though the flash is puny it's main use is to control the RC flash system on the remote flashes
Thanks for all that you and Chelsea do ..it's always informative and entertaining 👍🏻👍🏻
Excellent 'Go to' video for EM1 Mk1 - really helpful

Given things coming out soon - like the Mk IV; the M1 II; the GH5, I am keen to assess what might be the optimal configuration to make best use of my existing investments but build on them for video in particular, wildlife, pet photography, corporate storytelling and youtube- amongst others.
Great... Best how to on Olympus E-M1 yet... Thank you!
This is great, but when are you going to review the E-M1 Mart II? I just bought one, and want to hear your impressions.
Thanks
Another great, informative video. Question for this 'forum' though.... Can anyone tell me if you can programme any of the customisable buttons to act as an easy toggle between ISO and AUTO ISO whilst in manual mode as this is an action that i find myself performing often.
Great tutorial, best I have seen, love this camera, I have learned a lot. Thanks.
I am very seriously thinking about upgrading to this from my EM5!
You are the best! Please make a tutorial on the Olympus em-d e-m 1 mark II Many thanks!!
Awesome! You nailed it Tony. Is the color curator (adjustments) on the Stunning Digital Photography Book?
Thank you for taking the time to make the video.
Good job! This is a great introduction for my new camera.
Great video Tony! i'll be ordering my Inspire 1 tomorrow, should arrive on Tuesday :)
Kevin in Milford :)
Awesome training tutorial!
Hi Tony - I really liked the tutorial video on E-M1. can you suggest a good flash gun for this camera?
Tony, this might be the most annoying question ever, and for that I'm truly sorry..;) - but where are your shelves from; I've got some Ikea floating shelves and they sag like a ...well, I won't go there, but you get the picture.
thanks for these videos, they really are a great resource and I always point Olympus newbies straight over to you.
Regards,
Andrew
Glad I could help!
you forgot to specify what model this was em-1 em-1 mark 2 em-1 mark-3 because on the em-1 there is no zoom option. Not on my camera
Love the video - I ordered SDP from from Amazon in soft copy will I be able to get the ebook included as well?
Great video. I was curious if you had an opinion on the 60" Dolica GX600B200 vs the 65" GX650B204?
Benjamin Peterson Get the bigger one if you're taller and you're not trying to cram it in a suitcase. I hate crouching over a tripod, though I do use shorter tripods for travel...
Hi Tony, I'm considering a new E-M1 with the 45 1.8 or a used D610 with an 85 1.8. Over here they're about the same price. Which would you get? I love landscapes and portraits, not doing sports but would like to get into weddings next summer, at least assist a few times and see where that gets me, maybe as a side job once I picked up some more glass. Which would you go for?
Thanks
Wow, I'm so happy with this video: THX!
Noticed how lacklustre the focus peaking was, due to lack of colours, thank god the new firmware has 4 colours to choose from now!
Thanks Tony for the great video
So... In the video thumbnail there's a Om-D Em-1, however, there is a thing on top of it - in the hotshoe - what is that??
Hello I was camera shopping trying to upgrade from my Olympus e500 and I came across an M1 for 499 on b&h. I was looking at the m1 mark ii st bestbuy and it's really great but would I be better off buying the M1 and a fast lens or drop 1700 for the body with the m1 mark ii ?
Re: Flash Sync Socket
Thanks for such a good, in depth review, but why spend a single second, let alone your multiple comments, putting down the flash sync socket? With that socket and a little cord, I can use every strobe I've bought since 1974 (I have 6) Furthermore, I can sync with the $80 light panel I purchased in 2014, without buying the $80 wireless remote :-)
Thank you for your video. What kind of flash do you recommend for the E-M1
is the Olympus FL-600R the best solution? Can you approve?
Great video, many thanks.
I have cable camera trigger, it doesn't work with camera ?? there s any mode ?
I plugged it to take moons shot..
as of Mid 2016, is it still the most powerful?
Tony, can you select different peaking colors in E-M1, like in Sony cameras? White does not strike me as the most useful one.
mountainhobo Yes, I want red as well. Olympus only offers white or black
Ananda Sim That's unfortunate.
mountainhobo I believe the E-M5 mkII offers red or yellow as well as the black and white options of the E-M1
+mountainhobo Firmware Update 4.0, due to be released at the end of November 2015, will improve many features of the E-M1, one of them is adding colors and intensities to Peaking. Thank you Olympus!!!
Hi Tony,
Just wondering when will the training Tutorial for Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark ii be available Please.
Siobhan is editing it now!
hi, I do Olympus camedia e20 just got how can i review the pictures? I got used camera so no manual paper to check and can't find on RUclips . help
Kind regards,
Aaron
Please post a tutorial for the EM1 Mark II. Thanks.
We just got the camera in this week, so the tutorial should be up in the next week or two.
Tony,
Are you planning on doing a video for the OMD EM1-MkII?
Yeah, we have the camera and are loving it. I just need to produce the tutorial.
Nice tutorial. One minor point, iteration is actually pronounced "iteration". You know, like in English.
