    Bought mine new in 2014 for a long trip, stellar performance. Shutter died on me on another trip in 2017, Olympus replaced it for a pittance (labour, they picked up the parts) because "it shouldn't have happened". :-) Been largely replaced with the EM1x and the OM1, but it continues in use for time-lapse and as a back-up. Been using Olympus since 1973...came for the compactness, stayed for the lenses.

    I was given a 12 megapixel Panasonic GF 1 with 20mm lens two years ago. I was so impressed with the images that I considered replacing my 30 megapixel FF DSLR with the M43 mirrorless system
    To test that idea and to meet my needs further I would require a rugged system that had to have a view finder. Enter the EM-1 at $300 CAD with a 14-42 kit lens, along with the 20 mm Panasonic lens from the GF 1.
    I was very impressed. I loved the ergonomics. The flippy screen was excellent. It all just worked.
    I sold the EM1 and Canon gear and I purchased an EM1 Mk III. I’ve since added six lenses, a mix of PRO and premium glass. I love this set up as it really suits my needs. My only real regret is selling off the original EM1 and not keeping it as a backup. When out shooting, 80-90% of the time I too prefer the flippy screen over the fully articulated screen, although the convenience of the articulation when shooting vertically is nice.
    In my opinion, M43 is highly under rated. Most camera buyers should really give it a try before slamming the System. I think they would be shocked at how really good it is. All systems have their advantages and disadvantages. But when you look at each system there is a good balance of give and take between them.

    A beautiful,, well-loved camera to be sure. Reminds me so much of my Nikon FMs from my film days... it was almost an extension of your hand. You knew what you were going to get from it and where all the controls were without even looking. You used that keyword several times in your video.."confidence". I've held one of these but never owned one and I agree the size is very very perfect.. just like holding the OM1 and OM2 film cameras back in the day. I wholeheartedly agree with you that this would be a wonderful gateway camera for somebody starting out into micro 4/3 and I'm sure they would keep theirs just like you've hung on to yours despite whatever newer models you move into. Perfect reminder to all of us that you don't need the latest and greatest to make great photographs. Thanks Robin!!

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  11 месяцев назад

      The confidence part was about me "getting the shot", somehow, E-M1 was the first mirrorless camera that gave me that confidence, and convinced me to switch fully to mirrorless from DSLR!

    I really have to agree with you Robin about the EM1. It’s still one of my favourite cameras ever and although I cannot prove it with specifications I feel the image quality and colour output from this 16Mp sensor is better than my mk2, it’s just a personal feeling but I get more smile factor looking at my mk1 output

    • @tru3512
      @tru3512 11 месяцев назад +4

      That is exactly what I intended to comment - I have used different 16MP and 20 MP Olympus cameras and I cannot help myself, I like the look of the 16 MP pictures better, at least for the photographs I usually take - no crazy high ISOs, no dramatic pulling of shadows etc. I just find those pictures to be somewhat cleaner, more vibrant, more pleasing. Must try E-M1 :-)

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  11 месяцев назад +1

      The newer 20MP image sensor does give better high ISO and dynamic range, about one stop improvement. If you are not shooting in challenging situations the 16MP sensor is sufficient of course.

    Hi, Robin. Thanks for a wonderful video of one of my favourite camera bodies. It is SO versatile and, like you, I think the tilt screen is just great, as I do not use video a lot. For street photography it is just invaluable. I have a few Olympus bodies and I value the added functions og the newer technologies. But the size and weight is perfect.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  11 месяцев назад

    I use my EM-10 and its tilt screen for street photography. It has 3 advantages. 1) the tilt screen. 2) the size 3) the grain monochrome art filter. It make stunning pictures even with the 16 MP sensor. It’s the best. I find the 14-42 pancake lens is fantastic for this purpose.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  11 месяцев назад

    I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have two copies which I still use for pleasure , one with the battery grip attached, which makes for a very tactile and fun camera to use. I have later EM1 models too, including versions 2 & 3, plus X, but the original is an excellent performer, and a joy to use. The shutter has a 'harder' sound than the later models, but is reassuring and very positive. Unfortunately, the original EM1 is the only Olympus that I've had to send for repairs, but once it was seen to, it has performed without problems, hence the reason why a bought a second copy, like new, for very little money. They are a bargain on the second-hand market (UK).

    Bought my used Mk1 after my Mk2 as a low cost workhorse and back up. ! absolutely love it and use it a lot. Even though I now have an OM-1 the E-M1 is my preferred tool for the mountains. A little bit smaller and lighter, I'm still pleased with the images. Since it only cost me £200 I'm a lot less stressed about using it in challenging places and conditions.

    To me, the real game changer was the original E-M5. It was the first professional grade m4/3's camera from Olympus. I had two with grips and shot a lot of professional corporate conference work, portraits, and a few weddings. My wife still uses one of those original bodies and loves it -- she still gets amazing quality images with it. I upgrades eventually to the E-M1 and used two of those with grips for my professional work and personal shooting as well. I still have one of those bodies and will use it if I really need a small, lightweight set up.
    Robin, you are 100% right about the tilting LCD screen -- it really adds speed to shooting wedding and event photography. Unless someone shoots these types of events professionally, they would probably not understand.
    I still prefer shooting with battery grips, but even with the grip the E-M1 is a small form factor.

    Totally agree - I have my original E-M1 and also the E-M1 Mk II. I use the Mk II hi-res mode to photograph artwork, but for just going out shooting (or shutter therapy as you call it), I still greatly favor the original. As you say, the smaller size and the tilt LCD are two big reasons for me. And as a diehard film shooter still as well, I feel the 16 MP sensor in the original gives me punchier and slightly more film-like images. Thanks for this great video!

    There's something to be said for a camera that can withstand the rigours of competition and remain a useful tool to those that still see its value. I have two that I use on a daily basis. I've contemplated getting the OM-1.1 (because it's on sale at half the price it usually is) but it's heavier and the roughly same size as the Lumix S5 I just sold. That being said, when these two E-M1s croak the OM-1 will be less expensive again by another margin.

    I used my E-M1 for 7 years and loved it. The rear dial became unreliable so I eventually moved to the E-M1X. I always used my E-M1 with a grip and found the 1X only a little larger and heavier. Watching videos like this makes me wonder if we really need all of the upgraded tech the camera makers are constantly pushing at us.

      I think you can send in for the rear dial to be fixed, give it a try! And yes, we don't need the latest and greatest if our goal is to enjoy photography.

    Hello,
    I bought the em1 ii 3 years ago and am very happy with it. I haven't been able to try out all the functions yet, so it's perfectly adequate for me. I'd rather invest the money in good lenses or workshops, that will get me a lot further.
    Thanks for your videos.
    Greetings
    Stephan

    One of the things it got right was the flip up screen and was the reason I stuck with the EM 10 Mkii ; another great camera . As a foot note : I dislike the wet and cold ; dust and other climacteric adjustments that deviated from nice pleasant walkabouts when the light is just right for capturing the moment ha ha . I’m retired and don’t go places I once did when I was younger . I still crave a body and lens that will settle my cravings and easy to carry . When that is not possible then my phone will do . Gear is okay ; imagination and creative juices more important .

    2/5/24 Hi Robin, I own an use the E-M1 which I bought used but new to me in almost new conditions. I like that it i s weather sealed, well built and size. It does take great pictures for my use and has a few more features than my OM-D 10 M2 which is my prefer camera to use. I like that the OM-D 10 M2 which has a better viewfinder and back screen since it came out after the OM-1. I can carry both bodies and shared lenses in a normal size camera bag all day without weighing me down. Buying used Olympic OM-D cameras and using vintage lenses and kit lenses give me amazing sharp photos both in color and B/W. Since switching over from film to digital I find that my photography allows me more time to experiment with types of photography and edit to post process in less time and more results in less time that it took me in my darkroom days, and easier to share my images.

      Glad that you enjoyed the E-M1 and E-M10 Mark II, but the EVF on E-M1 should be better than E-M10 Mark II

    Robin , my EM1 died about 2.5 years ago /////// I miss it for my urban wild life shooting so much and i paired it with the 75 to 300 ...........what a light weight set up to just grab and go and get so much reach for no weight what so ever /////// Maybe I need to re-acquire this combo as lugging the sigma 150 to 600 and my z50 in summer is not so bad but in the winter with gloves and jacket bulk is a pain in the ass .........

      Not a bad idea as you can find one in used market for low price now! Certainly a good compact setup, if you don't want to carry too much.

    Aloha Robin...
    I mostly use the E-M 1 for macro shots. With my Tamron 100mm f2.8 AT-X Pro + adapter, which dates back to Nikon times. And yes, I love the tilt screen. Perfect for street photography with the Sigma 60mm f2.8 or Lumix 25mm f1.7 .
    Unfortunately my E-M 5 MK3 only has a flip screen. But that works too.
    Yes, the original E-M1 is still a very good camera. And since I ONLY take photos, it's perfect for me.

    It's still a very capable camera and was really well -supported with firmware updates. Mine has a broken HDR button and the rear wheel is unreliable. I just bought the battery pack and used the wheel on it, instead. I have the e-m1 iii, but this is my most loved camera

    I have em1 and em5 mark II. Although they are pretty old but still quite powerful for my amateur photography work.
    Both cameras were exposed to fine sand in Namibia and sudden rain shower in Kuala Lumpur, but thanks to its robustness! the cameras work perfect and show incredible result always. I don't think I will change the cameras until they completely broken.

    On my third E-m1, sold the others 2 years ago and eventually regreted it. Recently sold off my E-m10 mkii and used the proceeds to buy my current E-m1, still feels great in hand and is the easiest to get great shots from. I also own a E-m1 mk ii, Sony A6500, A7r ii and A9 but there's something about the E-m1 original that just feels right...

    My first OM-D was the EM-1 loved the camera, I gave it to my friend when I upgraded to the EM-1-III.
    I agree size and weight just about perfect along with having a the tilt screen. My dream OM-D would an E-M1 with minimum following upgrades. (1) Bigger battery (probably add 20g to its weight) (2) move the right strap lug up to the top plate (3) Add a portrait tilt to the LCD (4) Add the menu refinements from the EM-1-III (My Menu etc.) (5) Better placement of the AEL/AFL button - it is too close to the EVF for us left eye shooters.

    I had one till it died :( You're right about the size. The EP5 convinced me that m43 was more than good enough, the EM1 was just about perfect -- great handling and performance. I have an EM1 II now, but the smaller EM5 II is still my favourite walkaround cam. Forgot about the LCD -- yeah, it's hard to be inconspicous when you flip out the side/twist LCD 😅

    Agree 100%. The original E-M1 is one of those cameras you know will work no matter what conditions you throw at it. The mechanical shutter on my main E-M1 failed a while ago, but it’s still running fine on the electronic shutter. And articulated screens have become a deal-breaker for me.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  11 месяцев назад

      Yeah the mechanical shutter will fail at some point, the wonderful thing is, it keeps going on with electronic shutter!

    I managed to find a used one in excellent shape. It looks almost like factory new. With around 9.000 exposures. Looking to pick up a 12-40mm f2.8 pro lens...and I think I'm done. 😀 The whole thing costs me around 650-670 US dollars...with 2 brand new aftermarket spare batteries.

    Steve Huff promoted the E-M1 a lot as a great build with lots of innovative features. I would have bought one except that the images somehow looked plasticky to me, though the colors wowed. Olympus lenses are always sharp.
