A tremendous tutorial, one of the best I've seen so far. I have just purchased an E-M1 Mark II. I've scoured the net for information, downloaded work sheets and books, struggling to find effective and simple demonstrations and explanations for the camera, without having to muddle through the manual. Wow, you have delivered big time, a basic platform by which to explore and utilise the technical wizardry of this complex camera. Kudos.

OMG! Keeping up with this overview video tutorial is overwhelming from a beginner's point of view, yet the tutorial is on spot. For all beginners. If you feel the lesson is too fast then slow down the playback speed in the RUclips menu (3 dots in the upper right corner). Tony covers a lot of helpful information for this camera. Thank you Tony (2 years later)... Actually Thank You! Chelsea and Tony for the RUclips tutorials.

As someone who has just taken up photography as a serious hobby, I can't tell you how thankful I am that I chanced upon your tutorial for my EM 1 mk 2
Your relaxed but informative style makes it easy to retain the details and get to grips with a complex menu setup.

I've tuned in to other tutorials and find them equally informative. Thank you for what you do.

    Dear Tony,
I recently retired as a photojournalist and used Nikon D pro cameras for to many years. And couldn't wait to get rid of that heavy huge gear. Now I have a OMD EM1MK2 and was amazed at the compactness and power of this little guy. Thanks very much for all the help as I couldn't make heads or tales in the hundreds of functions and what not this power house can do. Your long tutorial helped me SO MUCH! as I'm on my way to MT. Bormo volcano in Indonesia on Saturday becasue of you I have not got a great understanding of the features and benifits of all these functions. I will be purchasing your publications from now on. I know it took hours upon hours to make this video you have the patience of a nun. Thanks and double thanks again! If your ever in Malaysia give me a heads up. I'm a friend of Matt Granger. I'm from Seattle and worked for AFP AP etc. Thanks again Tony and Chelsea.

Hey Tony and Chelsea! Are y'all gonna do a tutorial for the OM-D EM-1 Mk III anytime soon? I just got one, along with the 12-40 f/2.8 PRO lens (amazing!) and I'm really enjoying it, but the menus and settings are a bit overwhelming. I've picked up a few tips from RUclipsrs and I can read the manual for about five minutes at a time before my brain starts to hurt.
    Help please, if you can!

2:29 you can disable the manualmode if you don't like/remember it.
6:15 press ok again, to get into the big menue. So you do not have to remember which "file" is which mode.
1:30:03 This lens is the Panasonic Lumix 20mm Pancake - not from Olympus

Tony, at 6:26 in the video, if you hit the OK button again rather than use the front dial it takes you into the menu where you can use the arrow pad to see a full description of each record option and set the option. Then you you don't have to interpret up/down, optimist/pessimist icons. Great tutorial! Thanks for publishing it.

Correction: 1:30:38 You say Olympus 20mm, but show and link the Panasonic 20mm.
And I agree, it is the best m43 pancake lens. It was the first one I bought for my E-P3 years ago, and I still use it regularly. Though if I want a smaller profile I usually use the E-M10. The E-M1 is just too big to be a tourist camera.

I’m a relative newbie to Micro 4/3. Currently using a very nice OM-D E-M5, but hope to upgrade to good used E-M1 Mk II at some point. Even though it’s “old technology” in mid-2023, seems like it still has some life left in it. Enjoyed the hands on review!

You are the best!!! I just bought the OMD em1 mk 11 for myself for Christmas I have Nikon full format and regular. When I was in the camera store I bought a huge lens for the camera and then talked about the mirrorless and ended up giving the lens back and buying that. Thanks for the tutorial, Tony. Very informative.
Where I was surprised is that you skipped the Fn2 MultiFunction functionality, and just chose to assign that to a single function. The default MultiFunction setting will let you have several different functions controllable through this single button; while keeping the Fn2 pressed, rotate the thumb dial to select the desired function, then release and click Fn2 again to actually adjust the selected function.
Of course, whether this kind of button is useful at all depends on your style of photograhpy, as it does require serious amount of time and concentration to get from one setting to another.

Great, in depth, review and tutorial. One tip you missed was being able to re-position the focus point with the LCD, when your eyes are on the EVF. A bit hard to explain, but when you're looking through the EVF, instead of using the arrows to move the focus point, try sliding your thumb around the LCD display, which should be off at this point.

I love this video. I've reviewed it 5 times and seem to learn something new every time. As an underwater photographer, white balance is critical. I used to rely on post processing to adjust color but found the quality of the initial image to be significantly higher if I adjust WB while in the water. When diving, my option screen is normally set to highlight the white balance cell/custom WB. I use the sequence: OK - OK- INFO - Shutter - OK while pointing at a piece of bleach bottle wrapped on my arm to set the WB for my given depth. I find I need to reset WB every 10-15 ft (3 - 5 m) in change in depth. Are you aware of more efficient ways to adjust custom WB?

Great tutorial but I have to disagree at 34:34 - as far as I'm aware, noise filter would ruin the star trails and other long-exposure shots, but noise reduction removes only the spots generated by the sensor heating up. It may affect star trail photos, but for nearly anything else I would keep automatic noise reduction on, and turn off the noise filter. Thanks again for your awesome tutorial!

There is a better JPEG setting then LF that many users are not aware of, it is LSF, large super fine. You have to dive into the menu setting for this though. The JPEGs are noticably better with LSF. Not sure why Olympus does that.

Great video on the Olympis OM-D MK ii. Have you done a video of the Olympus Pen F? If not could you do one? I really enjoy your tutorial videos. You explain so it is easy to understand. Thanks for your and Chelsea's hard work.

Just bought mine for a ridiculous price of $849. new. Now it's time to really delve into how to learn what everything means and does.

Great teaching session. I'm a late comer, though. If I can seek clarification - what does a tele converter do to DOF of a lens, please?

There is a misunderstanding in this Video: Olympus (cameras) define High Speed Continuous Focusing as high speed shooting focusing only on the initial shoot, and defines Low Speed Continuous Focusing when the camera re-focuses between each shot.
In Olympus’s menu system you can go to the Custom Menu C and adjust The Release Priority so that the shutter can be released even when the camera is not in focus, with some subjects that are hard to focus on, this may give you a better keep rate.

Not a comment, but a question. I own the EM-1 Mk2 & the Pro lens lineup (less the 300mm) and really love the system. I noticed in your video that you think a lot of the Metabones attachments w/Sigma lenses. Could you elaborate what setup you might recommend for video capture and why? I have virtually no knowledge of the product(s) and would like to hear about your experiences and conclusions. I am an avid still shooter as well as video especially C4K. Thanks, Tom

A great review and instruction video. I loved the tip about setting the screen brightness in bulb mode. I sometimes shoot daytime pics at 3--5 minutes with 10 stop NDs. I hadn't been able to figure that one out yet. You showed me many ways of setting up this camera that I hadn't got to yet.

Hello Tony Thanks for a very informative video which I am still watching and digesting. Already I have remapped the power on of from the LH top plate switch to the AEL / AFL switch on my MK2. Do you happen to know how to do this on the E-M1 Mk1 please, or perhaps it is not available?? Thanks..

Tony.... I just finished watching your intro to Olympus omd em1 mk2. I bought the camera yesterday and I must say your video is simply brilliant. It is a fast track to understanding the camera......Your friendly approach is like having a best friend patiently explain the technology to someone that struggles....many thanks.....

Very good tutorial, always like them.
A G85 and GH5 tutorial would be great if you ever have the time. most people seem to only do tutorials for the top models but I believe the G85 is a very big seller so you would get a good audience for tutorial and it would cover most of the GX85 apart from the body layout.

    Hi,
thi is probably coming late o this video, but have a question: on this camera, when you half-press the shutter button to focus first (before taking the picture), does the button has a "clicky feeling stopper"? I ask this because all the digital cmameras i have used all have this, even other Oly cameras such as omd em10 em5 mk ii Pen F etc. But never tried one OMD EM1 mkii and bought one used and I dont have that. I have to half-press very softly so I can focus, otherwise the shutter will take the picture as I don't have the finger feeling.
thanks in advance and another great video from you. amazing. cheers

I just bought one of these cameras second hand with a very low shutter count and just found your video. BTW, excellent video !!! Question when you go thru the shutter modes I've noticed that the "Anti-Shock" mode is not displayed on your camera. It is on mine. Can you briefly explain its function for me ? Thanks

Great information Tony! However I’m still wondering how to get the lcd and viewfinder to show me exactly what I will be shooting. My lcd is showing me a bright sometime over exposed looking image but in fact Im -3.0 under exposed shooting complete darkness. Any idea how to remedy this situation? All I want is to see on the lcd what the image will actually look like. Any help much appreciated 🙏

Tony, thanks for the fantastic tutorial. Looking forward to seeing your review. I'm surprised nobody mentioned the unfortunate text in the background of your selfie pic (at the 23:43 mark). No disrespect, but that gave me a bit of a chuckle. Keep up the great work.
