Thanks for watching! I appreciate the tips viewers added in my last video so decided to try it out myself. I truly appreciate all the input and I encourage you to continue sharing. Be safe out there!
I live in humid south Florida, so I save the little moisture-absorbing silica packs that comes in packaging and throw them in gun boxes as an added protection. Those little packs can be purged of absorbed moisture by putting them in the oven at low heat (about 200 degrees) for a short period of time.
Some of those cases have a valve on them for moisture control, but dessicant packs are always a good idea. You can buy silica gel at a science supply and make your own. Get the kind that changes color when they start getting full of moisture and you can dry it out in an oven and put it back in.
Some can even be microwaved (obviously not the ones in tins). THOUGH, I haven't had much luck with that method. Also probably should bump the oven up to at least 220, above the boiling point of water, but not too much so that it should burn the cloth-like material that some packs come in.
I was gonna make a comment about how you can get silica gel that you can dry out. But it's best to get the food safe ones if you are drying them in your oven. Because some of them are made of some pretty nasty chemicals. I believe Amazon has the color changing food safe ones that work pretty good. If you have the money I would also recommend getting a mini oven that has a circulation fan just to be on the safe side. So you don't end up running or mixing anything with the oven you use to cook food
Plastidip works great for this. Just do it BEFORE ever storing your firearm in the case. Much cleaner. Very durable and protects the foam from tearing.
Hmmm, never thought of doing that to foam, thank You so much for taking the time to do this educational video, GREAT JOB! It would be nice to see how this is holding up in a year, AWESOME collection of guns, PLEASE stay healthy and safe out there!
Nice video I did that to one of the rifle cases for my CZ 457 rifle I did not use plasty dip gorilla mix the same product was cheaper. I did it in two layers. After was all done. I glued the two layers together. I did mine, about two years ago after multiple trips to the range still looks like new. I have done it to one of the smaller pistol cases. The only thing I did really different is I am able to get foam cut to whatever size I need and whatever thickness, I want from a local upholstery supplier that carries multiple styles and colors of foam. Very good video. I’ll give it a 10 on a reading scale.
Thank you so much for watching and for the feedback with your personal experience. I will definitely be gluing the layers together here soon. Definitely lucky to have the supplier nearby to get the foam cut and have extras. Take care!
Just a tip if you’re going to do a rifle case depending on your rifle for a different size thicknesses the first layer was completely cut out in the second layer I believe was intact no cutting so depends on the thickness of your rifle go with the proper thickness. I have used that pluck style before for sensitive photography equipment. It seems to break down if you can find a supplier for an upholstery business and can cut your foam to size I would go with the upholstery foam seems to be a better quality

I did not cut mine all the way through for more protection in case it’s dropped and the other thing I’ve seen videos people doing this if you’re carrying the handle and you drop the case by accident most people have their scope facing down so if you drop it, all the pressure is going on the scope so if you open it up, it looks odd. The way it’s facing where the scope is toward the handle. Keep up the good work you did nice work.
Having done the plasti-dip on multiple cases with pick-n-pluck foam, the more coats the better for longevity. The cost of additional cans far more beneficial to purchasing new foam. Highly recommend getting the spray can trigger handles. Prevents fingers and eventual hand cramping from pressing the cans to spray. Found out that on one of the large Pelican cases I sprayed...lol
I definitely agree the more coats the better! Yeah I’m feeling to do the larger case I’m gonna need the handle because I’d like my fingers to be usable after spraying it.
Keep silica packs throughout the layers to remove trapped moisture in the case. The valve works both ways it keeps both moisture out and in at the same time. Just an idea.
Im glad you took the advice from us. I used spray glue to glue mine together. I have used plastic dip and flex seal. I got some flex seal that comes in a little paint can( like house paint)and brush down in to the cut outs. Yours look good 👍
I used one entire can on just the top of both layers. Also getting between the cut outs. I bet I got about 6 thin coats out of can. I'm happy how it turned out.
Just get that spray contact glue ready, wrap the gun in a garbage bag to make sure the glue does not touch it, then wrap the gun/garbage bag in a thick flannel bed sheet, then spray the glue, then press the wrapped gun into the case where you picked out the foam and the foam should stay in place as it now has a flannel liner between the gun and the foam keeping the foam perfectly in place. If you can find it, a nice felt liner would be even better!
Did a similar project a number of years ago using a pelican case. While the foam is denser than the HF cases, i also used plastic dip spray to seal and close the precut gaps. These case setups do look pretty professional and make a nice range kit.
J ust caught them on sale again this weekend @ 45% off. 3800 series large case $39.99 was $21.99. 4800 series X-large case $59.99 was $32.99. Rifle case 9800 series $149.99 was $82.49
Great job and shared upgrade that is an excellent special case for use to carry multiple selections of handguns with possible accessories. I forgot the purchase when the sale was half price on this case. If you're ever in Georgia...North Atlanta and want to use my private range for fun or videos you're invited to.... Plus have use of Barrett 50 BMG to PMR30s. Everything free including ammo and instruction. Even 50 Beowulf ARs, to rare Colt SR Match Elite rifle...plus other tools, timers, lastest headphones, always free.
The problem with cheaper gun cases, is the light weight overtly soft foam that comes with them. I've gotten a cheap case from my LGS with that same large square foam and within a short amount of time, my handguns tore it up to the point where I had to try and reinforce everything with gorilla tape. Now I just get pelican cases.
The correct way to use a hard rifle case is to throw the foam away and put a soft rifle case inside instead. This way you can leave the heavy hard case in your car or at your camp site and only carry the soft case with you to the range or whatever.
@RandoWayne I believe about the same as Plastidip . There are several types, some with grit and others that are smooth. Possibly the best solution would be Dragon Skin by Smooth-On. A cheaper solution might be Through-The-Roof sealant.
I did this a few months ago and the plasti-dip didn’t work as well as I thought it would but it is better than not using it at all but it may take more than one can to achieve a better result
i will try this with flex seal spray too i wonder if it might be more durable, i worry about plasti dip flaking off after some time like how it does on cars
If you can look in your local area for a supplier that supplies foam for furniture repair, I found a local supplier that can cut any size any thickness I want price is very reasonable, and the quality of their phone is better than the plug style
@@artinist I used it for the rifle case I did and I feel it did provide a good job. It seemed to have better coverage with fewer layers. It has not separated or caused issues yet and the feel is similar in the rubbery texture.
The spray worked adequately but requires multiple layers. If using the brush on could probably avoid the need for layers due to you applying the desired thickness. In my next video I’m doing the larger case and I’m also going to g a different route with coating using flex seal. Thanks for watching!
From someone with over 35 years automotive refinishing experience I don't like the idea of spraying something over the foam, eventually it could flake off making a mess every time you pull a gun out, I don't really think it's functional... I feel it has a greater chance of doing harm to your weapons than good. TC in Annapolis MD
I mean time will tell? Foam itself is an abrasive agent with or without any coating on it so theoretically could cause harm either way for transportation purposes Im excepting of this. If I notice anything breaking down or flaking I will replace the foam , although I hope it holds up for a long while. Thanks for sharing your thoughts though and take care.

Foam is not abrasive. When buffing a car the compound you use is the abrasive. Foam traps dirt and sand that then can cause abrasions.
Not gonna argue with you, foam can be an abrasive though.
