School can be a very difficult challenging and confusing place for people on the autism spectrum, This is why I have created this list of things that can definitely help with anyone facing these challenges.
    Understand what triggers
    - Create a list of scary vs non-scary tasks or places in the school
    - Colour subjects on a chart: green = good, red = bad and amber = ok
    - Create a worry book write down all issues in the book, also try personalise it with their topic of interest.
Crate strategies for home use to calm anxiety and relax
    - This like going for A walk
    - Building Lego
    - Or scheduled quiet time in their room where they are safe
    Communicate with the school directly
    - Contact the SENco at the school and make the aware of the issues
    - Find out what has been done so far to accommodate the needs of the child
    - Consult with the direct line of staff who deal with your child day to day and discuss what strategies they are using
    - Simply ask your child what support they feel they need
    Adjustments
    - You could look at having quiet time during the school day in a quiet room
    - Using ear defenders outside in the play ground
    - A later start and early finish time to avoid busy school traffic
    - Using reward systems to help meet targets (check out my link for charts)
    - Older students may like to use apps to help with anxiety
    Home school
This may be a choice for some people depending on your level of comfort.
Always remember if you are going from home school to mainstream school, include a time of a reintegration period. Prep well.

I used to breakdown crying before school every morning. I tried to make myself throw up so I wouldn’t have to go in. I’d even try and convince the school nurse to send me home but she wouldn’t. I ended up being homeschooled for a year because my mental health got so bad. Being outside of the school environment really helped me. I did well in the last 2 years when I decided to go back.

I also had a school phobia
I used to cry everyday for hours and that lasted for 6 years and then I was moving to secondary school by which at 13 I was diagnosed autistic ...
The teachers would chase me around the school because I’d run in fear and I ended up self harming
So I became homeschooled which really helped me self regulate

My dr thinks my child could possibly be autistic. Im not so worried about it after watching your videos. I will do anything to make his life easier/better and love him more than I could ever imagine. Part of me thinks it might have come from me. Ive never been diagnosed as such, but ive always felt out of place...like an alien looking in at the humans. My dad was the same way. We were both very smart and made good lives for ourselves. I cant imagine any less for my kiddo. Thank you for all the videos!

    Hey Dan,
I'm close to 50 years old i live in the US and i feel i am autistic. I did some research for one of my kids worried about ADHD and i came across an article on ADHD/Autism. After reading about autism it explained a lot of things i had gone through all of my life. I am working on getting an official diagnosis until then self diagnosis is where i'm at. School freaked me out when i was a kid. I loved learning in school but couldn't handle going. I wound up quitting school all together in the 8th grade. School was so rigid when i was young, i wish i had the kind of teachers and understanding that is available today. I might have finished school and gone on to college. I still love to learn and obsess on subjects that interest me and try to absorb as much information as is available. I want to thank you for thr videos you make they are helping me on this journey to understand myself. Also i really enjoy listening to your band! Music helps me to get through tough times. Thanks again for what you do!

Switched back to home school in HS and was able to finish school a year early. SOOOOO much better than public school. School was horrific for my social anxiety. My kids still want to go though, as some courses aren’t available from home. :/

I had horrible schoolphobia in middle school but loved learning. I wasn’t diagnosed with autism yet at the time which made it worse because no one understood. I was diagnosed with OCD already though. I ended up being pulled out and did online school from the middle of the 7th grade school year till a couple months into 9th grade. I go to a choice school that has kids with different learning/social differences. It’s mainstream and a lot of kids have autism and/or other disorders such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD. I love my school how and am thriving. My teachers are awesome and very accommodating. I can be myself there without being being ashamed (I know I shouldn’t be anyways) and I have an IEP but also it’s kinda just the school in general is an IEP in a lot of ways.

Where i live (this makes my blood boil) the schools i attended here were horrible to kids/teens who had autism or had adhd/add. The schools would just put everyone who had a learning disability, adhd/add, autism, severe mental disabilities in a class. The kids were pretty much sentenced to solitude never getting to interact with the rest of the school which i get for sensory overload but still it was like they were kept from the rest of us like outcasts. It just always bugged me cause i knew some of the autistic kids and kids with adhd/add and they were incredibly smart and were getting no real education just pretty much babysat. Now as a mother ive been talking with parents with kids that have those things ive mentioned and been contacting the schools urging them to create classes that are specialized so kids can actually get an education.

Where do you live? I once found a school online (when doing research for a story that I'm writing) that seemed exactly like that and I was like "So if the kid is pretty smart but only communicates in a way that doesn't involve verbalising or sign language you're keeping it in a class that won't teach you that much apart from maybe basic life skills...?? How does that make sense when they can communicate effectively in other ways and understand you pretty clearly??"

@@Larry_Stylinson central California valley. And exactly, they only got some very basic life skills. And i live in a low income district so the schools always blame it on that but literally they were kept away and just babysat its so frustrating

    • @75maxdv35
      @75maxdv35 3 года назад +4

Asperger’s syndrome was an old diagnosis term for autism but now it’s just part of the autism spectrum. ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and it affects people’s attention span and hyperactivity. Anxiety is the constant feeling of fear and nervousness. Dyslexia is a condition which affects peoples reading, writing and spelling skills and ear defenders are what people wear to stop loud noises coming into your ear. They look a bit like headphones. I hope I answered your question!

I have a bad problem with not wanting to shower and I tried saying I'll have a reaward or how I'll feel afterwards but my brain refuses to do it. It's starting to get to me and I don't know what to do-

I hated school! The other kids were so loud and mean and could not keep their hands to themselves. I would miss the bus on purpose too. At one point I refused to go back to school and my parents found me a Private Christian School. I went through 2 of those too before I graduated. That helped a little but it was still tough. I've bounced from job to job too and haven't worked in years. I still live at home.

Also doesn’t help with our condensed “quadmasters” this year with Covid. My daughter was failing her geography, main problem was the teacher hadn’t even gotten her IEP, and because the quadmaster is so short the course is nearly over and she’s only getting help now to get her missing assignments in. So maddening. Even her IEP is not very useful as it only covers a couple areas because of her ADHD, as we can’t get her ASD assessment done till summer (also thanks to Covid, and the fact that the local children’s mental health source basically shut me down when I asked them to assess her, so we have to travel to get this basic need met.) and of course, the school won’t accommodate unless it’s diagnosed professionally. 🙄😡 The ND kids are loosing out even more during Covid and no one seems to actually care or have anything to help in place.

Same. I actually notice that for me it's really bad when someone has ADHD and talks faster than what I'm used to. I know someone who rambles so fast that my brain can't keep up anymore and at one point goes "That's still English, right?!? HELP!" and I'm just getting overwhelmed by it and need breaks away from them to cool down again.
