when I was a child i remember that dad took me to a car show and there i saw an golf gti, I don't remember if it was gen 5 or 6, but anyways, in my opinion, both look great, i especially like the mk5 r32 and gti fronts
The VR6 always sounded amazing at high revs...I was always an Opel fan so owned a Kadett or two back in the 90`s and early 00`s and never got beaten in a robot to robot by a "Voorah", but DAMN, I loved the sound they made when they really tried!
Our family car is the Mk5 R32. My partner heard a Nissan GTR pass once and loved the sound so I played her a video of an R32. We've been running one for 5 years now and the symphony of combustion never gets old.
Arrrg so beautiful, I'm from South Africa but now staying in New Zealand and finally bought one of my dream cars, got a 2008 R36 passat sports wagon oooh God the sound and comfort is the best.
I've only ever driven in a Mk3 VR6 and 220km/h came up as fast as I could say VURA! 😵💫 What a lineup though 🇩🇪 personal favorite has to be the MK6 R 👌🏻

We didn't get the Golf 4R. What we got was a Golf 4 GTI-R. It had the same motor, just some cosmetic enhancements that made it look like the European Golf 4 R32

Many people saw the V5 as our "R" version as well as the V5 was marked as a "R5" in some regions. Was just saying would have been nice to see either of these included in this awesome line-up.

The normal one was available in either 110kw 5 speed or 132kw 6 speed. The V5 Golf was later killed and only continued in the Jetta and also got a bump in power and got a 6 speed box instead of the 5 speed... The Jetta also later came with a 1.8T with 110kw and 132kw and also got a 1.8T-R version that was only cosmetic just like the Golf...
I just bought the 7.5R and it’s the best golf I ever drive. Even better than the MK8 GTi. The MK8 R is too expensive at the moment, gonna give it a few year for the depreciation

Back in 1993 when I still lived in South Africa, the VR6 was the first veedub to cost over R 100 000. It was much needed.The previous generation Golf GTI 16 V 2.0 was getting outgunned by Opels, Toyota Twincams etc.The VR6 was an all round package.
MK5 R32 is the car that made me fall in love with VW. Up to this day, I''ve yet to by anything else by VW. Hope when I get into the MK8 wont be disappointed, the test drive on MK8 GTI didn't give me that wow factor but with the R the verdict is still out
the Mk5 also made you feel like it was a tighter fit to your body side it was narrower. I had a mk5 gti. Test drove a mk8 GTI; have wanted to try an R but they're hard to find. If it wasn't for the extra power and adaptive dampers; i'd stick with my tiguan.
I see what you did there Ciro 😉 "The golf 7 represented the best of Volkswagen hot hatches." I have to agree with you there having owned a 6R and 7.5R. I test drove the 8 GTI and I was massively disappointed, sure the R will be better but it needs a better quality interior to win my vote. 🙃
You guys missed out on the Gold IV R32 - Growing up used to see one parked near Ellis Park all. The sound and at the time when the GTI was slow it knocked it out the park with that car...
@@ruaan11 I know two people who have imported and my brother has two door mk v r32 and before that a two door Pirelli GTI 30 edt , there’s a few imported models it’s just about who you know and who can get you Lesotho, Botswana and Swaziland reg and maintaining it yearly .

For me, the R32 will forever be symbolic and worthy of the R badge. The generation after the MK6 became too soft , not hardcore enough to be named as the best driver' and engaging cars.

The responsiveness and feel of the steering wheel, how you would know at all times what the front tires are up to and doing ,the way it clung and hung on to the road. Thrilling, i tell you. Least but not last? It was a joy to listen to! ❤️

The car would do literally everything for you with the adaptive suspension and the other related driver aid tech. Call me old fashioned, but then maybe i guess i love cars from the good old days.
@@lehlogonolomaringa3213 i own a mk7 R, I would not say they are soft they are just very capable, they handle the standard power with ease, like its nothing,a stage 1 tune is needed then it becomes a different animal :)
I feel like they moved to 4 cylinders because they didn't want to dilute or milk the VR6 engines too much they didn't want a oversaturated market flooded with them , they wanted them to stay special get goosebumps everytime you see one , and probably also because 2 liter 4 cylinders are lighter and Volkswagen is probably the king of making small displacement high power amazing reliability engines that has outrageous tuning potential an engine that's easy to work on easy to extract power from also lighter
Love my r32 mk5 also had MK 7.5 stage 1 but sadly house was broken into a few months ago an car got stole and written of on the hunt as we speak but must have dynaudio and leather plus 19 Pretoria not easy as most are standard spec in uk
The oldest car on this line up is the best sounding car, followed by the second oldest, followed by the third oldest.......the latest ones don't sound very authentic. They've tried to fit in the Akrapovic exhaust system onlatest models but I think it still doesn't cut it.
That was possibly the worst one...too heavy and just lazy especially in stock form. An mk7 GTI would blow past it and to add insult to injury would burn less fuel doing so 🤣 The mk7 R was the first properly fast R model with lots of tuning potential and awesome handling

I'm sure it's been said already - but you're missing the most iconic version... The MkIV Golf R is really what started it all... Yes, the MkIII VR6 was special in it's own way, but it was the AWD in the MkIV that really changed the game.
Back in the day the VR6 with such a big engine had a lot of expectations which it never delivered. The biggest shocker was the sticker price of R99 900. A milestone price point for a Golf. I guess R1m is just around the corner. Mk3 was also the last of the easy maintenance and reliable VWs. The Mk4 was solid rubbish in reliability and VW like Merc have gone down the tubes from a reliability cost perspective ever since.
Port injected VR6 sounds 100x better than the direct injected VR6 found in Mk5 golf’s and the later direct injected 3.6 Passat engine. 2.8, 2.9 & Mk4 R32 were the original and best chewbaccas

VR6 3.2L has one of the best exhaust sounds ever but the 2.0T can produce great power with a BT and bolt-ons while keeping a stock block and head.
