You’re definitely correct in that viewers who’ve never read one book from the Dandelion Dynasty would watch this video, because I solely watched to see if it would dethrone Malazan as your favorite series. Glad to see it did not, however I’m curious to see how Malazan will hold up for you after a re-read. Especially considering you’ve read so many more series since your last Malazan journey.
I second thi this
I just finished! Loved the ending too. Man...this series feels soooo long though 😂 His writing can feel exhausting sometimes because of the things that Matt pointed out. With that being said, I don't think ive come across another author that has made me think as much as Ken. So many true to life, real questions, with very modern applications. And he poses these questions where there just seems to be no good answer and puts you into the characters shoes of being like ... Man ... Wtf do I do? And i love the way Ken answers these questions. How cancwe really know whats the right thing to do!? Another thing i Loved was when i understood Jia's persepctive on the Grace of Kings. Jia, in general, is just an S rank character for me. She is so compelling in Book 4, i was blown away.
MAYBE MINOR SPOILERS for narrative structure:
I haven't gotten more catharsis from an ending than I did from Speaking Bones. It did something I rarely see in other endings and wish I saw more of. The main conflicts all kind of end around 3/4 of the way through and Liu left a very sizable chunk of the book to round out resolutions and endings. We really got to see and live in the ramifications and fallout of the story. Marvelous ending that cemented it as my second favorite fantasy book (only behind Memories of Ice).
Yes! And continuing with minor spoilers....
I've seen other books that do this, but it's generally a very happy ending and it overstays it's welcome. With dandelion dynasty being so dark, the resolutions felt so much more enjoyable since they felt more real.
HECK YES, I am so happy that you loved this series as much as I did. Ken Liu is truly a masterful storyteller and it's a shame that so many people bounce off the first book, because this story is truly something special. Keep on gushing, we need more people on the hype train!
Oh and I just want to say, justice for Timu 🥲
This series is my favorite of all time. The ending of Speaking Bones made me cry and after watching your series of reviews I definitely need to go back for a reread. I’m so happy to see this series get the love it deserves
I'm re-reading Grace of Kings right now. I didn't gel with the first half on my first read but loved the second half and I'm really appreciating this first half a lot more now.
I appreciate your comments about people who watch reviews without having started the series, I definitely watch all of your videos about books that I haven't even started because I like to know if the investment is worth it. So no, I haven't read the first of this series, but I am now intrigued to read the rest of them precisely because you've given them such high praise and haven't spoiled anything. Books are a huge amount of my limited spare time and its so frustrating to be 200 pages or 2 books into a new series and it just pitters out. So thank you, I greatly appreciate your choice to not spoil details for us who can't read 80 books a year. 😅
I absolutley love this series. Liu gets away with some complete insanity in Speaking Bones. I tell everyone to read this series, and I'm glad you will, too!
2:46 never heard of the books before this vid popped in my recommendations and now im considering reading these books, especially since the series is finished
thanks 😊
Judging from your 2 favourite series, you should definitely try The Second Apocalypse by Scott Bakker, is on the darker side, but one of the few series that i would put besides Malazan
I'm reading it next month !
Bought Grace of Kings recently, now knowing the ending is great i'm definitely excited
I want to get to this one this year!!!
Oh man I am so hyped to try this one-glad all 4 books slapped for you!
One of my fave series ever…:fantastic ending…and the fight scenes were written so well….I hear you about book 3 as the second half goes in an unusual direction for quite a while…but kicks back in and actually add’s nicely in the final book…:great review sir.
Thanks man.. I always see how the book wraps up before starting the series.. Starting this series soon
Wait, for the thumbnail you went outside and touched some grass?.. Badass.
Nope! I went outside and realized my gardener had come that day and I had no dandelions. So I photoshopped it.
I have read the first and second book, but will definitely have to reread before i continue the series
You should do a video on most rewarding fantasy book series of all time.
And do a little trolling by putting Malazan on the list..
This is one of the few things we disagree on Matt. I've DNF'd Grace of Kings twice now. I can't get into it. I'm jealous of your enjoyment of this series!
i wonder if the pacing of GoK is similar to fire and blood by GRRM? i enjoyed that pacing
It's faster
Does this mean that you like the fourth book more than the second?
Yes. VERY slightly.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews that's great🫡
Yay, I liked this a lot too.
Dungeon Crawler Carl book 3 review when?
October.
