Stormlight is brilliant. Sanderson is a superstar. The future of fantasy.
If you like Stormlight, you should read The Five Warrior Angels, fantastic series by an author who’s name escapes me 😉
@@markymarkeaton Brian Lee Durfee who also has his own YT channel.
hes the most overrated author of today
Yes! That "I'll see what I can do" scene is so good. You almost forget it after reading Oathbringer and Rhythm of War, but every re-read when I know that's coming it's hard to put the book down or stop the audio. So good!
Best moment in all of cosmere
Awesome take. Even flawed works can be incredibly special. I felt the same way about the Licanius Trilogy. Most of the characters (not all of them) were vanilla, but the plotting of that series was so special that I was completely blown away by the end of the series.
Edit: I know you like Graphic Audio, and I should mention that this for me was by far the most entertaining format for the Stormlight series.
so cool to see you compare your thoughts now to back then. I think I thought the same about the Shallan flashback scenes but the reveals at the end really made it up for me. I think Kaladin's flashbacks were better intertwined with the "now" narrative in TWOK tho. Excited to see what you think of Oathbringer this time around :)))
I agree that this was the book where Sandersons strengths completely overshadowed his flaws. This was the first Sanderson book I gave a 10/10 to. Every other book couldn’t quite hit a 10 because of the flaws. This book still has those flaws but he did the things he does well so damn well in this book that it didn’t matter.
Stormlight Archives is something else. That first two book is quite something
Man, I LOVED Shallan's backstory. She's one of my favorite characters.
What's funny is that 99.9% of audiobooks that have 2 narrators do that. Its extremely rare to find an audiobook the man does the men and the women does the woman in every chapter
Yeah I've never read a book that has more than 2 narrators that isn't a full on cast production. Interesting, I wonder why they do it this way. Must be easier on the production side.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews 100% I also think it may have something to do with them showing off their talent as a narrator. Like hey I can do both male and female
Have any of you listened to the Dune audiobooks? The first book would do a whole cast production for special chapters, but then half of the book is just one guy.
In the second book, Dune Messiah, It's just one guy 99% of the time. But paul's voice actor from the first book comes back to narrate the final chapter.
Yeah, I like it this way a ton more since it feels like someone is reading a book to you. For people that like more of a movie-like experience, there is always graphic audio. I can't immerse myself in those, but I'm glad both types exist
It happens more in romantasy so I'm hoping that that transfer to other sub genres.
When i read this for the first time in 2021 i thought it was the best book id ever read. When i reread the other month? Its still the best book ive ever read. WoR is nearly perfect IMO
OMG! Why did you post this? Now, I want to completely abandon my TBR for the next several months and re-read Stormlight.
LOL, my bad!
the "Honor is dead but I see what I can do" moment/chapter/chapters si the current "to go" when I am in a reading slump.... and it staied from the moment I read it around 2 years ago. I know by hearth the chapter where it starts :)
Michael Kramer and Kate Reading are the same who did Wheel of Time :)
I personally like Michael Kramer good enough, while not my favorite, does a fair job. But I seriously dislike Kate Reading, her tone kills many of the most emotional scenes for me. And her male voices ALL sound like an old lady (regardless if they are supposed to sound young or not), making many scenes, specially the ones that are meant to be romantic or playful very weird.
Are you planning on reading Edgedancer in your re-read or just the full length novels?
I really like this one. Best sanderson book that I’ve ever read but it is mostly popcorn fantasy and still presents a lot of Sanderson s common flaws still very fun tho
Just finished a reread of this as well. Stormlight is where I started with Sanderson, so coming back to it having now read the rest of the Cosmere has given me a much deeper appreciation for the book as a whole from a craft point of view. That being said, I too noticed the blemishes and cracks a bit more
Couldn’t agree more about the world building. One you forgot to mention is spren. I feel like the world building is tied to some of the best worlds like lotr and asoiaf, but then the spren throws it way beyond that.
Dude I'm slowly moving through the grplaphic audio books and they're absolutely incredible. It's damn near like a movie
Im mostly an audiobook guy but swapped to kindle partway through because the narrator things was weird for me. On my reread i did the graphic audio and those things are insanely good, though it ended up being like $150 for the whole series that i bought around black friday...yeah, its a ton of money. But absolutely worth it for me
I have read words of radiance and want to read the next book but I was made aware that it's part of the cosmere universe and tried reading the first book of mistborn and I can't even get past the 100 page mark 😭😭😭, now I don't know what to do. I desperately want to read oathbringer but I want the "full experience" too.
There is absolutely no reason to read the other books hes written for you to enjoy any of his series. The tie ins and connections are barely worth mentioning
I agree with the ”negatives”, although I just read this my first time and haven’t read much fantasy, only Name of the Wind and sequel. I have watched a lot of good films and tv though, and I guess they tend to do the dopamine moments a bit more often, hence sometimes this series felt slow. Shallan backstory unfortunately was predictable to me, maybe extra because it was so slow, that I got time to wonder what is actually going on, and unfortunately it was what I guessed right away 😕 Still, loved the book overall!
I love love love these books, and I'll admit, everything you've heard about oathbringer is true, I've been reading it for 6 months (young father with a family, lol so usually I binge read on breaks or in the morning) at the same time it has been the hardest to digest. ...it's already my favorite so far...it just is, looking back over the first two I realize how narrow in scope they really were as far as the narrative and IMO the world building. I'll definitely finish storm light all the way till 10, I like to take a while and refresh with other series in between. I absolutely recommend Storm light to any fantasy fan as, TWOK was the first book I read since the Percy Jackson series in early high school, so yes it is absolutely accessible and addictive...really the only gripe that I can understand about the series is sure, I don't always want my POV's to be super hero esque good guys, but then again- LOVE the szeth chapters as well. Just great, arguably bloated volumes but damn you get every words worth I guarantee
WoR is really good. I read it when it first came out and loved it. I've read hundreds of fantasy books since then, and I still loved this book on re-read. I liked Oathbringer better on re-read than I did the first time. I hope I like RoW better the 2nd time. I guess I need to get on that reread because I'm going to Dragonsteel this year, and I want to know what all the nerds are talking about at the Q and A sessions. Lol
If you ever decide to re read the Wheel of Time, highly suggest you check out the audiobooks done by the same narration team.
This series is borderline YA and pretty anime like which isn’t my taste but you have got to hand it to Brando Sando for the truly original world and story he has created and the scale of it. In a world of stand-alones and trilogies, it’s rare to get a long series like this that follows a single epic story and even rarer for one to be so consistent in quality and imagination. Also I haven’t known another piece of media to be so open to fan theories like this since Game of Thrones.
Well said. I can look over any flaw for the big stand up and cheer payoffs in this series. It’s probably because I’m a poor reader but I don’t have other books on my list that have done that. Harry Potter when I was a kid maybe… When I finished this I was like naming my myself Kaladin in ocarina of time.
I love the Wheel of Time Audio Books and it's done in the same way.
I think one small pet peeve I have with Sanderson in the Stormlight Archives is that he writes mostly formal, epic dialogue between characters, and then at some points just inserts multiple 'Yeahs' which kind of bring you out of immersion. Also there's this one section of the book where Dalinar grunts like 10 times in succession which became cartoonish
That’s what kills me the most on mistborn. The dialogue.
Have you listened to the wheel of time audiobooks? They're done exactly the same as stormlight is with the same narrators and everything. Hearing kate try to do loial's voice later on was quite hilarious
Do you think Sanderson can fall into the Scorsese type trap where he is so good that people don't edit him down? Speaking about how the books are really long with parts that can get sloggy, could use some tightening up
The issue I have with Shallan's flashback chapters is the her dad is made out to be such a caricature of abusive dad that he comes off as comical and moronic. Medieval Homer Simpson. And then the revelations at the end of this arc feel so obvious from the start that I felt like the chapters were wasting my time.
Love it!
I come the stand point where i didn't really enjoy the way of kings. And i know most people say this is the best stormlight book. I dont know if its worth it for me to read this one?
I love this series but I dnfed mistborn bc of Micheal Kramer. His voice just isn’t for me but I know loads of people love him
I'm currently dragging ass on my 20th day reading Oathbringer (though I've barely read several days) and man... I never thought I would say this, but these books just feel so padded. Mainly the flashbacks. Dalinar's flashbacks are the first ones I've given a fiddler's fuck about. It just feels like you could cut so much out of these books without losing anything.
That's my biggest issue with the series. I feel like you could cut like, a third of each book at least and not lose anything.
@@MalignantCactus Right? And Wheel of Time is my favorite series, so I feel like me being bothered by length / padding is saying something.
It’s so weird to me that people think this is great world building. It’s the one thing keeping me from continuing past the first book. The world makes no logical sense based on his own parameters for the world. I have a list of problems and they really started to get in the way of my enjoyment. Maybe some day I will finish the series and see if he ever reconciles the illogical aspects of the world. If he doesn’t, then I probably won’t get past the next book. I’m also 3 books into Malazan, which is on an entirely different level than any other series and Way of Kings just seems like YA nonsense compared to it in my opinion.
I love having a male and woman narrator. But my problem is that, while Kramer is okish, Kate Reading does not work for me. Her tone kills many emotional scenes for me and her male voices are horrible, they all sound like old women, making romantic/playful scenes sound weird.
ROMANTASY!
READ DISQUIET GODS RIGHT NOW!!! WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING!?!?! :p
It's next!
Sando is getting paid by the word. It could be trimmed by at least 200 pages.
Man, I was really hoping for a review that had the words simple, overrated, and good for kids because that was my takeaway after reading the first two books. Sorry, not a fan.
so edgy lmao
I’m hoping to hear you sorta hate Kaladin.. he’s very unlikeable to me.
... Moash? Is that you?
@@yousillyenglishknnniigit8205i just finished TWOK last week and not having any plans to continue reading the next book. I found TWOK is not my cup of tea and decided to not continue this series, but i keep wondering why everybody in this fandom seems hate Moash. Yes he was insufferable in TWOK but in the end he could get along with Kaladin, right? So what's wrong with him? What did he do in the next book? I just want to know, give me spoiler 😀
@@rafaelblake7278 really, you're not gonna try the second book? It's really good. As for moash i honestly cannot give the outright spoiler... But, SPOILER SPOILER
.
SPOILER, Let's just say he has a lot of hate in his heart. And does one thing or two that's...mean.
@@yousillyenglishknnniigit8205 TWOK is felt so effing long, with nothing made me drawn in the story but Shallan storyline with her stealing plans. Kaladin's past bored me to death tbh, Dalinar's vision, i'm too stupid to understand the point of those visions lol, but what makes me angry the most is everything finally hit the fan in the last a hundred pages, while i got bored 900 pages before... Shallan's revelation about his father, about shadesmar, about soulcasting about Parshendi, everything that made me hooked is on that last hundred pages. That's something i don't like, and i heard the same thing happened on book 2 (900+ boring pages, 200+ pages or whatever of something great await in the end). That makes me decide to dnf this series. I hope you understand what i mean, english is not my language....
@@rafaelblake7278 i understand! I was engaged but i understand it's slow. With that said, for what it's worth, the second book is faster paced and more interesting. You already know the characters, they are interacting more among themselves (like kaladin with dalinar) which is more engaging, and more very interesting stuff happens along all of the book. Plus, i think shallan's story in the second book is much better than the first. The only downside might be the flashbacks. Those are shallan's this time around. However if you feel like it's pointless, just let me tell you that there are a lot of hidden secrets in there. A lot of. So that is very different from kaladin's flashbacks. Keep that in mind, so that it may be more engaging, should you read the book. Remember, the rest of it is much more interesting and faster paced. But of course, you do you! Hope i help
