One behind the scenes thing for where you talk about how it felt like a side quest. Sorta, yes, but not on purpose. In my original outline the events in HoA were what I planned as the first half of the 2nd book, with the second half being the basic plot of Destroyer of Worlds. Only it kind of expanded A LOT as I got into it, and as you saw there's a bunch of important character development that takes place. Plus, between me and the publisher we wanted to shoot for 120k books for the series instead of 200+k doorstoppers. So I broke the outline in two and expanded that first half into HoA. The primary events stay about the same though. So good catch.
Lol, you won't get too much of that on my channel. A lot of that segment left my channel after I said Fifth Season is one of the worst books of all time.
I appreciate what you have to say about authors and politics, Matt. I also respect how you completely live out your beliefs on that, by not including politics on your channel, with my understanding that you actually work in politics! I know what I believe and if I chose to avoid authors that I disagreed with politically then I would have a VERY hard time finding any books to read. I’d like to just enjoy a story for what it is. Will have to pick up this series soon! Added to the TBR.
Sad that it’s taboo to say, -as a writer-that the Hugo award should go to the best book. I’m reading this series and buying every book in hardcover to support Larry.
It's crazy that Matt saying he thinks that books should be judged by how good they are and not on the politics or identity of the author basically tells us what side of the aisle he's on P.S. I completely agree. Identity politics have ruined way too much of modern life

I’m on page 52 and seriously considering giving up. The story just doesn’t do much for me so far. I’m having trouble following what is happening and why it’s happening.
I've been slowly reading his Monster Hunter series, like maybe 1 book every 3 or 4 months. I like it well enough. I think those books are about 80% action, but still manages to get some character development in there.
I’m about to get into this series within the next few months-but I must comment on how much I love that sweatshirt-but my team sees you guys week 1. And I’m stoked to see the game
Larry's a good author and he's gotten better as a person.. I think. But a decade ago he was intolerable. I also used to be a member of the libertarian party. But you learn and grow and step away from The Fringe and philosophical purity. 2010 Larry supported everything that broke my life apart.
Lol. :D Dude, my philosophy hasn't changed in the least, and if anything I'm less tolerant of histrionic BS now than I was 10 years ago, because I'm older and don't have time for angsty nonsense. Also, I've never been a member of the LP in my life, ever. I've got a lot of libertarian philosophy, as in I think the government sucks at pretty much everything and we're better off when it leaves us alone, but I've been a registered republican since 1994.

Correia is the type of writer that beats you over the head with his politics. Also the shenanigans he pulled at the Hugo awards showed what this guy is all about. One of the only times that I can’t separate the writer from the art.

You should interview him sometime. He's pretty approachable.
You're so right, people have freedom of expression, we should not punish authors for their views.
Imagine any non-western country where the people and culture were hostile towards their own men. The west is ridiculous right now.

Great to hear Matt briefly address the Hugo awards nonsense of recent years.
A hugo award is meaningless nowadays.
Thanks for the review! It is much appreciated.
And as usual I take great enjoyment from the inevitable handful of comments about how evil I am. :D

The next two are awesome, too. Read his Hard Magic trilogy. It's almost indescribable, but it's a helluva read!

Getting me hyped to try the series! Glad I picked up the first book in hardcover from a used bookstore
If you liked this you would like Servants of War and Monster Hunter International, his other books
Don't forget the Grimnoir series

This has fast become one of my favorite fantasy series.
I have these 4 books sitting in my tbr pile, after I'm done with the Last War trilogy I'll definitely be ploughing into them! Nice review Matt.
This series is high up my TBR now.
I love Larry's books. Can't wait for the last two books to drop in this series!
Yeah this one is HIGH on my priority list 🤙🏻
I finished this book last week and it was pretty good. I want to catch up and read the 5th book on release.
Excellent series. Just finished reading the eARC of Book 5 (Graveyard of Demons) for the second time. Possibly my favorite fantasy series, after LOTR.
Is book 5 the conclusion? I’ve heard book 6 is the concluding book?
