You’ve been dropping a lot of advice lately, the great advice that the “pros” wont tell you. Cant really put a price tag on that. Thanks bro, keep them coming!
There are many kinds of wedding photography and no advice works for all photographers or all couples. I much prefer documentary wedding photography, where the photographer documents what happens but don't disturb the party to arrange photos, and change the look of authentic scenes in order to get a "better photo". In my opinion the photographer should take as little space as possible. Go in close, take great photos of what is actually happen, but don't control and interupt people's experience in order to get a better image and don't take over a moment by being the center of attention. A documentary photo with real emotions will always be stronger than a posed photo with perfect light. If the couple wants posed photos, set apart a separate time for them and let the rest of the day flow uninterupted. And let the posed photos feel as natural and relaxed as possible.
Someone i know spoke to a friend, mentioning i was just about to start out trying to turn photography and their friend got in touch with me to ask to take photos for them... that day is today, hopefully it goes well!
@@GreenSushiPanda Not bad, we've been having difficulty on both my end and theirs in regards to them seeing the images so eh... but the ones they have seen they really liked!
At 3:25 you mention the importance of quality pictures on grandma’s fridge etc. You’re right. I always ask myself before taking a picture, is this something I would be proud of and print?
I was a wedding videographer for 8 yrs and I'm planning to switch to be a wedding photogragher this year. the main reason is to reduce the amout of equipment to bring in a wedding day. lol Ive done 2 weddings as a photographer this past 2months and I really enjoyed it because all I have to bring just my camera, lens, flash card, batteries and it fits in my 10L sling bag. no tripod, gimbal, audio devices. And I saved a lot of my energy. I felt like I could shoot a 2 weddings in just 1 day.
This really inspirational I don’t shoot wedding but I feel like in a way I’m using this advice for different styles of photography I’m doing or going to do for clients. Mitch says it remembering you have to get results for your client or someone else and not you, to me is a very nice way to change my mindset and how I think about photography. I think this also makes you go above and beyond and not take lazy shots. This can also trickle down into one’s photography as well but you need to see yourself as a client in a way that needs results.
I shoot weddings full time and great points! I haven't had the burnout, as I do it full-time, with other content work spread out. I enjoy it, it's always a great day. Pressure is something you get to work with and I kind of like it. I usually recommend to others to just relax and shoot what you can. You can't get it all! BUt once you get a routine, you'll get the hang of it :) (I have done this professionally for around 6 years)
Thanks so much! I have gotten started by being invited to a neighbors wedding and I asked if she would mind if I brought my camera along. She then asked me to shoot the send off and reception along with doing some second shooter stuff with the paid photographer. That was both fun and educational.
100000% agree on everything you said. I shot a few weddings this year (second and lead), for the first time ever. Two weddings in, I realized that most genres of photography come into play in wedding photography. At first that was a bit of a shock to me because I felt uncomfortable in most of them. But you figure it out and the challenge is so much fun now! I can see how much I’ve improved this year. Much more than during my previous two years of being a hobbyist photographer only. Btw: outstanding work that you showcased here, Mitch. Really, really good stuff.
Love hearing your early experiences, because it resonates so much with my current situation.❤ thanks for sharing. Looking forward to that follow up video about hit to make your way into the industry!
You are very good at what you do. Congratulations on your work and you said it all in relation to wedding photographers who are so often undervalued and diminished. Thanks
Thank you for this! I’ve always avoided event photography due to my lake of social skill 😅 I’m a portrait photographer and I find it extremely difficult to get any paid work. Been doing it for almost 2 years now and still haven’t found 1 paid work 😄 maybe it’s time to look at other options that can get me on the right path! Love your vids Mitch! Xoxo
Thanks for the great advice. I am currently trying my hand at wedding photography. Can anyone help me out? On how I should go about setting up my website and pricing.
When I first started I thought weddings were definitely something I wanted to do, at least for awhile. Met a friend who had been shooting weddings for awhile and she was burned out and was hating photography. Seeing what she was going through made me quickly realize that I don't even care about if shooting weddings might be the best way to make money, if it comes at the expense of me hating it and hating photography, then I've completely lost the whole point of why I started photography in the first place.
Honestly.. Weddings are chaotic (I have shot a few) but one day of chaos and a few days of editing (with a business that’s set up right) isn’t bad for the pay. I haven’t found one day job from offices to retail that hasn’t burnt me out so I would rather take photos and think of what selling my soul to a day job felt like in comparison. Most other forms of photography honestly don’t make full time money and quickly become side hustles. I’m tired of side hustle money. That’s if you want to work in photography and like portraits/weddings generally though.
Mitch, I really enjoy your videos man. And I would love to see a video on ways to become a second shooter at weddings! Wedding season is coming up here soon in the US, you think someone could pull it together in time for this season?? 😬
Yet another incredibly helpful and insightful video! Long time subscriber here and your videos never fail to inspire me. Yes please on how to get into wedding photography! I'd love to know how to book your first client and how to reach out to someone to second shoot without a portfolio, maybe also a video on how to shoot with flash and low light. I've actually been hesitant to get into the wedding industry because I'm introverted, I feel like that industry is geared towards more extroverted photographers - good to know that you could still be successful at it regardless.
"How do I get into wedding photography?" Please do that vid. After a 20 year career in commercial photography, burn-out, then a few years in retail, I'm ready for the next chapter: wedding photography! BTW, subbed! 👍
35mm as it represents an 'authentic' view, repping the human eye. I've worked with a few weddding photogs and most use Sigma Art lenses, specifically 18-35mm and 70mm for ceremony.
Hello Mitch, thanks for that video, this year my dream is to shoot weedings. But iam a little bit worry about it, because iam a little bit shy. I took photos for a music band and someone ask me. Tell a joke. And i was like, whats a joke. Can you please make a video of how to drop that shy and start make people laughing. Please make more videos about weeding. Love it
Second shooter demand is so high in the uk it’s impossible to pick up any work if you don’t know the photographer. I tried asking if I could just carry bags and nobody wanted to know, I was just called ignorant and rude for suggesting this.
Offer to be a second shooter for free. Build a portfolio that way and leverage that to get your first client (probably someone who doesn't have the budget for an experienced photog, so it'll be rough in the beginning, but will build exponentially if you present great work and get good word of mouth. Don't make the mistake of over selling and under delivering, every client is very important for word of mouth.
Use high F stop number (your aperture). This is often used in very bright conditions since having for example F/16 will reduce the light coming into the lens, which means that you will have no separation between your subject and the backround. To achieve the best results you could take two pictures - one exposing for the subject and another one exposing for the backround. you could then merge them in lightroom and have the best dynamic range to play with.
I'd love to do this but it sounds terrifying! What if my camera just explodes in the morning... No it hasn't happened before but what if it did? What if my back up camera exploded too? And i got the flu? Ahhhh. This is the pressure for me. Just incase I let them down.
Have a backup camera. Yes, you've got to be somewhat of a madman daredevil to do it, as it is risky af, but also very rewarding and fun when shit isn't hitting the fan. I'd say there's far less intense ways to make money, just about everyone who gets in looks for a way out - it can be a trap as you booking a year in advance, maybe more.

Wow your editing/use of color/composition is STUNNING
I used to bartend and serve weddings as a caterer nearly every weekend and I always was envious of the photographer.
Such a cool job
Amazing and STRESS…FULLLLL

Can somebody tell me how you would shoot an image like at 7:00 of this video?
To get such sharp background.

The money is in Wedding photography but it's by far the most boring photography aswell. Especially all the editing afterwards.
