BUILDING A CUSTOM TACOMA FRAME

- I have been building this Tacoma for a while now and I still haven't had a chance to get the gussets or fish plates welding to the frame joints! Well today is the day! This video has a lot of welding and some really good progress on building this custom tacoma frame. If you see something you think I should be doing differently, I would love to hear about it in the comments! Thanks for watching!!!
#tacoma #welding #fabrication
Remember to co your new windshield when you do any grinding, cutting or welding around it, the metal sparks are hot enough to melt the glass and pit it really bad.
Trent, lower the truck and sit in a chair to weld, be comfortable. Also, to keep from warping the steel, move around to different spots. Come back to areas after they cool down a bit.
I just learned what a fishplate is used for .... Thank you Trent
Welding takes time, a bit further on with the rebuild.
Best wishes from Mike. 👍
Here we go again, another Sunday, another Lesson with Trent's Garage. Watching and learning..thanks for share Trent 🙌 ❤️
Yep
He's telling you the truth about the splatter from welding or from grinding. It will stick to the glass and will leave pits if you try to scrape it off. Found that out the hardway on an outside welding job for a customer.
So don't forget to cover the glass!
@@berniejanssen2863 You took the wrong approach. You were actually reinforcing their glass with slag to make it stronger.
Trent, good call on cutting so the transfer case sits up. One rock bye bye transfer case$$$$$. Get her up for sure.Your welding is outstanding. God Bless.
YES YES YES, Don't get lazy and accept it as it is, Cut the cab so your Atlas can clock up flat! Remember also to keep check on your welding bottle. It's a known fact, they only run out on a Friday after the weld shops or gas suppliers are closed, or on Saturday or Sunday too.
I truly believe that your intuition is severing you right.. Rotate that transfer case now and not have to regret it later. The first time you get hung up on it probably won't be a nice affair for your ego. Your doing such a beautiful job. It's gonna be one heck of a Rock Crawler.
Jim
I agree Trent , you probably would be happy with moving the transfer case up and tubbing out the body 👍👍👍. And it’s always great to follow along with your build. 🤘🤘🤘
Looking good Trent! I would seriously consider cutting the floor and rotating the t-case up to keep your belly flat. This is the stage to do it. My .02 anyway. I enjoy watching the progress!
Awesome welds as usual, now you got more practice, maybe do your vertical welds up hand instead of down hand , you’ll get better penetration 😁🤷🏼♂️
It is a lot more difficult but stronger! For the most part it probably won’t matter too much because you’ll have so much tied together that it will be plenty strong 😁👍🏻
As always thanks for taking us all along with you on this journey 😉👍🏻
Wow, great looking welds, Trent! Looking good & coming along nicely! 👍❤️
Ironman Trent !!! Looking good !!!
Put a good exhaust fan in the back corner. Between that and a floor fan you can move around you will be fine.
Looking good Trent, Yep I’m here watching. Will catch on the next one
Welding overhead isnt fun....but its better than laying on the floor and doing it! Hahaha be thankful everyday for the lift!
Oh I definitely am!
This might help you. Trent have Allie, buy you foam , poster board, it's every stiff.. cut your mock up, supports out of foam board first... tape it place, stand back...look , see if you like it. If u do, copy the pattern to the plasma cutter. And hey...a rule of thum...
If you sandwich, 2 metal flat together, I would have, spray painted a primer, on the side that will be welded together. That, thin, pocket, (( will sweat, water will find it's way in ) and rust from the inside.
Trent, you and Allie have done a pile of work on that building, you need to build a mezzanine in the shop. Your welding skills are definitely up to the task, check out What Riley did on Ambition strikes, move the heater to the hoist bay. I have high ceilings in my shop garage also and came to that realization also. I Enjoy watching the fab and build stuff keep up the good work
3M welding paper works really good for covering your windshields and prevents sparks and welding materials from wrecking your glass Most welding blankets are made with fiberglass and can scratch your glass. So 3M paperwork's the best. It's also adhesive. adhesive backed.
WELD THROUGH PRIMER! Spray it on both sides of that steel before you weld together. Rust will push those welds apart
Trent making surfshark ads about safety and also wearing rubber gloves while welding :-)
Very short video but loved it
I think you are pretty good at welding. Nice to see a windshield in place. The main thing I am learning is how precise you need to be. It’s as bad as tailoring a suit jacket is. Amazing.
Great video Trent
Awesome to watch you transform a wrecked truck into a rock crawler. Always enjoy watching.❤ from Oklahoma
Good Idea...!
Before you weld the cross member your gonna want to mock up the driveshaft to make sure it will line up!
The Tacoma is looking and coming along great
Pretty good lookin welds !! Stack of dimes !!
You do great work
I knew you would get that plasma cutter dialed in! Looks great!
Nice job, Trent, it’s all coming together. Great video!👍🏻
Definitely want to tub that transfer case. Don’t want it hanging below the skid plate
I'm a bit late on this one Trent ,you should have temporary cross braced the frame before you welded the fishtales
I would probably watch any channel you started even if it was Trent and Allie play dominoes. 😂 I'm glad that you're doing something cool though!
Pretty nifty welding job. Overhead, uphill and downhill.
Great job Trent and good looking Weld's, coming together.
Making progress!
YOU will want to cover the new window with cardboard inside and out, otherwise the grinding and welding sparks will melt and stick to the window, then when it rains they will rust pit.
I think I see the concrete floor done in the other garage, perhaps we will see that tomorrow?
TRENTYOUR doing a supper job keep up the good work it's going to look good
once again a very instructive video with very clear explanations please continue with this thank you for this lesson in the field of automotive technology.👍👍👍👍💯🍀
Cut the trans tunnel completely out and raise the entire driveline and clock the tcase flat. With the tcase clocked in it’s current location that’s just going to be a huge anchor on a rock or ledge and you will at the very least be breaking front drive shafts/output shafts. I know it seems like more work and time but you will be doing it eventually, might as well do it now before you unnecessarily start breaking things because you tried to take a shortcut now.
Looking good coming along nicely guys
Use the same engine mount bushings at each end of the tranny mount to frame, do away with the big bulky stock one. You will gain 2” of extra clearance
Yes I was thinking the same thing !
Because now with the plasma table Trent can pretty much make any bracket and mount shape he needs!
Little by little
make sure you tape up the windshield before grinding and welding around it as it would be a shame to ruin it by embedding the surface with metal spatter
Your doing just fine. Forty years behind of me so I feel safe saying this... get the camera out of the equation and it would go much smoother... or poor video content ... what is one to do. First build the mount on the crossmember so that when you fit it to the frame, your struggle is simpler... not simple but lets just say "Easier to see where it should land at and how you are comfortable with..... if you are not certain... tack it and leave it for a future job to come back to as your going to build it several times in your mind Trent
My vote is go ahead and gut the interior. It’s only going to weigh you down and collect dirt anyway. Go big!
Nice welding skills! 👍👌
Thank God you said you were going to try to rotate the transfer case because when you were putting the support under the trans I said to myself, I hope he clocks the transfer case, that's sitting way too low!
Let's get you up to 50,000 Subbies!
Trent, as Allie asked for a mullet hair do?
Could you build a bolt on pivoting support to both frame rails? For servicing gear box maybe, just an idea.
Lol, I'm a Steamfitter by Trade and refuse to ever run a 7 inch grinder. Would rather burn out a 5 inch.
😊😊😊😊😊
👍👍
What size did you use for the frame rails? I just got a double cabe with a rusted bent frame. Nice progress so far.
Trent I’m sorry I’m going along on this journey with you but what exactly are the fish plats used for? I love the videos, but I have no mechanical knowledge.😅
u should just heavy tac it then when u pull it apart for paint finish weld it all
Excuse my ignorance Trent but are the fish plates for extra strength? Project is moving along nicely congrats. PS Awesome work with the excavator!
Yea it’s to reinforce the joins
Can you clock the tcase closer to the floor pan?
Just remember, metal spatter will pit glass, so don't weld near the window.
Excuse my ignorance, but what is the purpose of those fish-plates? Thank you. Joe
Get a BAS (big a$$ fan) for the shop.
BAF
@@Jasoos_Jasonda oops, typo. Yes, that is what I meant.
Look into Big Ass fans to help cool the garage
Aren't you putting aircon
In the Casita?
Clock the transfer case and make the skid plate flat. You will regret it if you don't.
What do fish plates do
Hey, what gear are you running (differential)? I’m guessing at least 5:14/1, with those tall tires… maybe larger (numerically)
😊
5.38’s 😎
@@Trents.garage
Detroit Locker? Or Posi (limited slip)?
PS. These are selections from EATON. You may run open OR a true spool..
Is this build still going or is it for sale?
What purpose does it serve
How much lift do you plan on having If you think your transfer case is a problem.
I want the frame to be about 24” off
The ground but with 42” tires, that’s pretty dang low to the ground
Upper Body work out !
What exactly is a fish plate?
Trent keep one thing in mind not to weld to much in one area.
I’m not up on everything what does fish plate mean
Why are they called fish plates Trent??
No idea
Nit picking here, But can we maybe get a different soundtrack for Trent's Garage than Trent & Allie? Hearing those same couple songs 3 days a week has just recently become a distracting focal point.
I’ll work on getting some different songs for this channel. Thanks for the input.
@@Trents.garage I was in a mood the day I wrote this, sorry if it came across cruel. Appreciate the reply.
Yeah?
instead of AC maybe just get a big quiet fan
Is it Easter yet? 🐇
lol!!!
Flitch plate, not Fish.
Have I been saying it wrong this whole time?
🤠👍🛻
👍🏻👌🏻♥️🙏🏻
Shouldn't the 'fish' plates have been welded to the frame before the frame put under the cab? Wear a mask while grinding. Don't you have a home addition to be built before winter, and maybe an apartment to complete?
*Promosm* 🤤
Too much yakking.
to much talking
Should use weld
through primer
I agree, cut out the body and tub it..!
with everything else you are doing how much time during the week do you have to spend working on your truck ???
Half a day haha
Hmmm, so you’d rather put in a new windshield then weld around it? 🫤
