Love FFIX, excited to play it, but part of me feels snubbed lol. Since they have jumped straight from a FFVII remake, to now doing FFIX, and yet they have skipped right past FF8 which to my mind, is most deserving of a remake out of all of them. FFIX does make sense though as it's a quintessential FF game ideal for an anniversary celebration, whereas 7 and 8 both deviated from the formula to make a more near-futuristic setting.
FFVIII definitely needs some love because the music is fantastic, the art direction is brilliant and the more beautiful world of FFVIII, with its seaside towns and european architecture is great and contrasts FFVII's rather bleak and ugly world full of pipes, slums and pollution (I had a walk around Balamb Garden in a VR recreation of it recently and it just made me nearly break down in tears of joy) but honestly the combat system is BEYOND broken, and the story and dialogue could be redone to better convey the romance and time travel narrative they were going for. I really want to revisit FFVIII but when I think about playing it, I know it will just devolve quickly into being wounded as Squall and spamming Renzokuken limit breaks, with ridiculously overpowered strength because it's too easy to break the Junction system. I would love for the same care that was put into FF7 Remake's new materia system, to be applied to making a new Junction system for an FFVIII Remake. One that is less convoluted, less broken, but has the same flexibility and customisability. The way the Triple Triad card game synergised with the crafting system with Card Refining, was an absolute stroke of genius since it made Triple Triad an integral part of the game rather than a pointless (albeit fun) distraction.

Agreed! FFIX is a fantastic game. Every time I replay it I'm reminded how special that game is. As you said, it's a bit odd they're skipping over FFVIII, but I think I might know why.
I have to agree with Jeff Grubbs speculation. I don't think the FFIX Remake will be a full fledged Remake like FFVII. I think the ATB turn-based combat works with FFIX really well. I think IX will be their first "modern" turn-based FF and I think it will do extremely well.
And I think FFVIII will get the same treatment as FFVII Remake. It just seems more fitting for that atmosphere and set of characters to get a full fledged remake like VII.
I could be completely wrong, but it just seems like remaking FFIX with modern graphics seems easier than a full-fledged overhaul of FFVIII, which might be why they started with FFIX.

Since I have made a habit of posting walls of text on this channel I figure I might as well say how I personally would change FFVIII's battle mechanics.
First of all the Limit Breaks need to not work like FF6's desperation system. I don't mind it if perhaps Guardian Forces can only be summoned while low on HP though, in fact it kind of makes sense, since they are supposed to be your protectors. But spamming Triangle until Limit Break appears is really broken, and should be replaced by a normal Limit Break meter.
I would have it so that you upgrade Guardian Forces similar to the weapon upgrades in FF7 Remake. So say Ifrit, at the start of his menu tree, he has "Fire" already unlocked, but also has other upgrades like Strength +2, or HP+20 etc. If you unlock these upgrades with AP, should you equip Ifrit, he will grants you his Strength and other Attributes as a bonus (on top of Squall's existing innate attributes.) And since you can equip multiple Guardian Forces, you can mix and match the spells you're receiving, the Attribute upgrades, or any other abilities in their Tree, like Mug, Doublecast, Auto-Haste etc.
Next, an Affinity system. Similar to FFIX's weapon system. So suppose you have to equip Ifrit in order for Squall to use the Fire spell. After a certain amount of EXP, Squall will eventually permanently unlock "Fire" because in the lore, he is gaining affinity with Ifrit. Now... you can unequip Ifrit, but still be able to cast Fire. If you do have Ifrit equipped, maybe he can also unlock a Passive that gives "+20% Boost to Fire / -10% Boost to Blizzard" or something, so you can decide whether to keep Ifrit equipped to go all in on Fire, or maybe start working on Shiva's Blizzard spell next etc.
Environmental Draw Points would basically allow you to learn one of these Spells, without needing to have the Guardian Force equipped. So if Squall has Ifrit equipped, he can gain progress toward learning Blizzard even if Zell has Shiva equipped at the moment. This lets you plan out your progression. And you could craft and find items which have a similar effect. You could Draw magic from enemies, but only once per creature, and it would only give slight progress toward learning it. The best way to learn, say Fire, is equipping Ifrit.
As you progress down the Tree with Ifrit, on more advanced nodes you'd find perhaps Cure, Fira, Firaga etc. When a GF learns a spell, you will begin to learn it through the Affinity system if you have that GF equipped. GFs could also have menu abilities like unlocking new crafting recipes (fire-related items become craftable when you reach a particular node with Ifrit's menu Tree.)
There would still be a menu where you are able to junction magic to your weapon, or to your armour etc. (similar to Elemental materia, and Added Effect materia) but obviously if you junction Firaga to it, you'd need to have mastered Firaga, by equipping Ifrit, in order to get it so your Armour doesn't just negate Fire damage, but allows it to restore your HP when you take Fire damage. So the affinity system, mastering a spell, is akin to leveling up Materia. Junctioning magic to your HP and Strength I'm undecided on, since I think it's unnecessary. It's one of the more confusing aspects of the Junction system and I think it could all be simplified by letting the GFs have stats like the characters do, which are then transferred onto any character who equips them. You will get mostly stats like Strength and HP from Ifrit, but if you want Magic and Spirit, you might want to equip something like Shiva. As you unlock more slots to equip more GFs, you eventually will get to a point where you want a balanced roster since you may exceed the limit of what you can receive Strength-wise if you keep going for the strong GFs rather than the more magic-focused ones.

@@EikonicGamer What you're saying makes sense, because... the whole ethos of FFIX, is "classic and traditional." A return to roots. So if you're going to be releasing a pretty, modern ATB-based Final Fantasy game, it makes sense to pick FFIX.
I really hope you're right that they will remake FFVIII after they're done with the ReTrilogy. I don't even necessarily care if they "Remake" it, I just would like anything... A sequel perhaps. Where they don't recreate every inch of the world, they just let us revisit the important locales which really stick in the mind. My dream would be perhaps an online game, maybe an MMO, where you're a cadet at Balamb Garden and you get to pick your fighting style, your class/role, which GFs you want to have your character built around etc. Especially as I said, if it were VR. Although I know a lot of people would hate that... I'd love it just because I'd love to log in, walk around and play some Triple Triad over some hotdogs at the canteen with other players, and just feel like I'm there in that world... in the "virtual" flesh. Like I'm literally there. It's crazy to me that our technology can allow for that nowadays.
But of course, I'm happy playing a single player FFVIII game on a monitor or TV also, it's just that exploring Balamb Garden in VR was a wild experience because it made me see that the tech can really allow you to "live" in that world, since FFVIII was designed specifically to be a more optimistic world to contrast the doom and gloom of FF7, it makes for good escapism, and VR is the ultimate escapism. But like I said, that's not realistic to expect. That's just me taking nonsense about my very niche pipedream lol. I think that for a VRMMO to work, there would need to be some classes that are designed for a traditional TV, which can also interact with the classes that work through VR motion-controls. So that it can have a large player base while VR is growing. Letting you play together no matter what platform, or what medium (TV or VR.)

Sounds awesome to me dude! and sorry for the late response. Dealing with stuff IRL and forgot to check back after seeing this haha. There is definitely a lot of things they could do to improve the system in VIII and I'm sure they're aware of the flaws. The junction system was tedious at times, but really only tedious if you wanted to be completely OP lol. My biggest gripe with the junction system was I felt guilty using any spells unless I sat there and farmed the max amount. Your suggestions all sound solid to me!

Not a fan of FF7R, eh? But in all honesty I don’t think they would drastically remake FF9 like they did with FF7. They would most likely keep it exactly the same. FF9 has always been a nod to older FF games so remaking FF9 as a modern ATB-turned based jrpg would be a great move.
