Excellent!👍👍

My favorite line out of the whole series. I enjoy all 4 hobbits
What about eleven-onion? Lun-ion- Afternoon Onion, din-ion, sup-ion? They know about those, don't they?
I WOULD count on it...

So excited to see the video version of the podcast! Welcome to RUclips, boys!

Fantastic! 👏👏👏
THey didn't seem terribly concerned to me...
I'm pretty sure the volcano is called Mt Doom (Orodruin) - Barad Dur is the fortress/tower
Yep haha, I was just about to mention this too! If Sam and Frodo had brought the Ring to Barad Dur, Middle-earth might have been in trouble...
Yeah I reacted to this as well! And the place in the mountain/volcano where the ring was forged and destroyed is called Sammath Naur
Thank you, I was about to say the exact same thing. Ooh poor Joey
Yup. Barad Dur translates to Dark Tower. Mount Doom is the volcano.
I was looking for someone to say something about it!!
This is really great. I’m glad you two started this...quest...thing...podcast.

Justice for Joey!!! He got the Mount Doom question right! Barad-dur is the name of the tower, Mount Doom is the volcano. Idk where you got those questions but they’re wrong!
Correct! Samath Naur is the name of the cracks.
Exactly! Barad-Dur is Sauron's fortress, which means Dark Tower ins Sindarin. For shame.
@@jaysnell7822 Mount Doom is the mountain, Barad-dur is the tower, but the exact coordinate spot where the ring fell is called Lava-dur
Exactly, Mount Doom is what it is (obvious, no reason to talk around it), Barad-dur is the name of the tower. Too bad.
Haha! I wondered how many comments i'd have to read before someone called this out! Looks like it was the fourth one!
OUR FAVORITE DUO! 🎉
Still to this day, I think it’s hilarious when I’m at the pub and the bartender offers me a pint and I say

As a kid I didn't know what a pint was I always thought he was saying " they come in paints?" Because of the accent 😂 I was confused

Ditto Buttons!!!
Same.
Same same!
The answer was actually Mt Doom, Baradur Is the fortress of Mordor
I was wondering about that as well. Thanks for clarifying.
@The Friendship Onion . I just wanted to clarify a few things as requested ;)
The volcano, is called "Orodruin" in Elvish (literally translates to "Mountain of Fire", or "Mount Doom" in the common tongue).
If you are referring to the actual chamber inside the mountain, where the One Ring was forged and eventually destroyed, that is called "Sammath Naur" (Sindarin) for "Chamber of Fire".
"Baradûr" is Sauron's Tower.... (Sindarin), deriving from the words "Barad" (tower) and "dûr" (dark).
As for Aragorn's last speech... it never happened in the books, because the battle was a desperate last charge at the Black Gates.
Despite having the Army of the Dead on his side, they were losing the battle and didn't have the time to re-group or rest before the final charge, as shown in the movies....
Also Éomer had a really big part in winning the Pelennor Fields battle.
Awesome podcast guys, you should definitely do more ;) 9/10
Aragorn had already freed the army of the dead at pelargir but good job on the sindarin
@@liamskinner4922 Thank you for the correction! One more reason for me to re-read the book, I guess :D.. I am in the process of reading the Silmarillion now and there are so many events and names to remember, honestly I cannot comprehend how the professor remembered all that and actually re-wrote everything many times throughout his life. God bless him though he gave an invaluable gift to the English language and literature, and although I'm not English, I wish I could take a linguistics course, to better understand his structure and thinking process.
@@JuGGerNauTT32 I know right Tolkien was SO amazing!!
Here for the corrections! :)
@JuGGerNauTT32 you are absolutely right about the locations in Mordor and thank you so much for sharing/correcting.
Regarding Aragorn’s speech; I think the podcast question was referring to the final battle outside the Black Gates of Mordor after the conversation with the Mouth of Sauron (seen in extended edition) rather than the battle of Pelennor Fields, which took place in Gondor.
By the time of that final battle, Aragorn had released the army of the dead from their pact and the mustered forces were Rohir, Gondorian and the remainder of the Fellowship who were able to fight. (Interesting side-note; in the books Merry doesn’t fight at the Black Gates, but remains behind to recover in the Houses of Healing with Eowyn and Faramir).
There was no speech by Aragorn before the battle at the Black Gates; that masterpiece is all Fran Walsh’s doing.
Barad-Dur is Sauron's tower, Mount Doom is the volcano where the ring is destroyed. That guy was right. It was such as easy question I thought you guys were pranking him.
I was scratching my head at this too. I thought they were messing with him. Unfortunate.
So he could have won the chair after all.
UNLISTENABLE LOL
It's Orodruin Anyway
I definitely yelled into thin air in that moment. They need a new person writing the questions.
They address this in Episode 4 lol
frodo wears the ring SIX times in the book: at tom bombadils house, once at the prancing pony, once at weathertop, once while hiding from boromir, once to sneak away from the fellowship and go off on his own, once inside mt doom.
also mt doom is where the ring is destroyed, barud dur is the name of saurons tower
That guy was correct about the Mount Doom question guys. Bara-Dur was the dark tower were Sauron resided.
Yeah if they wanted to distinguish between the mountain and the place where the actual fire is, they should have gone with the Cracks of Doom or maybe even the Chambers of Fire.
They got so excited and caught up in the moment, as hobbits do, that they forgot to talk about why the show is called “the friendship onion.” Could it be, perhaps that the friendship has layers? Or maybe it makes them cry as they reminisce, or... were they just hungry when coming up with the name?
Good question!
French onion soup?

"WHAT are you talking about with the clock face?" had me rolling hahaha!
Honestly tearing up seeing these guys being still really close and good friends, LoTR is my favourite world of all time, this podcast is going to be amazing.
I was 11 year old when I was introduced to Tolkien's universe through the movies.
Those movies, and that universe, in many ways saved my childhood!
It was an escape from a less-than-great reality, and when daily life became too overwhelming, I would watch the movies to forget the world around me, and instead get pulled into this fantastical and magical world, with all of these amazing characters that the two of you helped bring to life on screen!
So from the bottom of my heart, thank you ❤️
You also should read the books 📚
I’m only 50 seconds in and my first two thoughts are “wow Dom’s voice is so deep” and “I love how these two seem to be Zach Braff and Donald Faison levels of on-screen-but-also-off-screen-bffs” 😭😍
Dom's dirty old man voice is really amusing. :) Billy still sounds the same to me. This is amazing.
"I won't be able to sleep tonight trying to work out what you were talkin bout!"
My thoughts exactly Billy Boyd, what the heck was he seeing there?
I feel totally justified as a true fan getting every one of the questions correct! :)
I aspire to have a friendship as pure as theirs.
Reaching the end of the first podcast, I can honestly say it lived up to my very high expectations. It was absolutely everything. Their banter runs so smoothly, they could literally talk about anything at all, and it would work.
And gotta love those accents
Jason Boulton That definitely made it even better!
The first podcast ive fully gotten into, so glad I have finally found one and two amazing people hosting
I'm sorry but the mountain the ring gets destroyed in IS called Mount Doom (Orodruin). Barad Dûr is the Dark Tower of Sauron. Certainly NOT the place Frodo should've taken the Ring to... actually the place they tried to avoid the most
Yeah we also felt gutted for the guy. Mt Doom is the correct answer, you're 100% correct.
Came here for this. Sometimes onions have a bit that has gone bad in the middle, but cut around it and the rest can still be delicious or even have a tantalising bitter note to heighten the whole experience. A world without evil can never truly appreciate good. Beautiful podcast otherwise!
@@CourtneyRichards3000 I agree. Loved the whole thing and can't for the next episode! I wasn't trying to complain. I just wanted to clear things up
Yeah, I also was like "noooo"
Thanks for saving me from being the one to cry foul! I woke up my sleeping doggies at this point! Otherwise Dom and Billy--great job, I totally enjoy your banter.
Ian Holm did a Hobbit radio play? And then he became THE Hobbit?! That's amazing.
Yes, it's a great listen-to.
I love how Dom and Billy talk about like those movies hitting you at the right time and like being such a big cultural thing, and it's like, "yo, you guys were in the franchise that did that for me!" Like I grew up with the prequel trilogy and that was great and I enjoyed those films; but Star Wars doesn't even compare to the impact LOTR had on my life, my grandmother literally forced me to watch the first one because she loved the books, and that was the first time I actually understood what it meant for someone to die. And being an older brother I really related to Merry and Pippin, and after the fact as a writer, learning more about Tolkien and the larger universe I am constantly in aw and inspired.
The clock face analogy will haunt me forever.
These two are some of the most natural podcasters I’ve ever seen. They have such a way with speaking that I find I’m hanging on every word.
Now we know what Pippin and Merry would do after LOTR in real life, thank you thank you!
Clearly, eating food and frequenting pubs. 😂
"I feel as though I don't have much cream in my Twinkie.".... Same, Billy. Same. xD
A new euphemism for erectile dysfunction.
I'm crying at this!! Love it!! 🤣🤣
I wanted to read LotR when I was seven and my dad just went "okay sure." I loved it immediately but there were a lot of things that went over my head . It was only when I reread the entire thing as a teenager that I was able to fully understand and appreciate what a masterpiece it truly was. I think Dominic's dad did a good thing making him wait before reading LotR.
Watched it in the cinema at 13 then read the books, but only understood it better rewatching 10 years later.
I agree. I had "The Hobbit" as young child and could get past the first page. Couldn't understand what a hobbit was or the description of where they lived.
I read the first two books at age 9 but it was a struggle. The third book just defeated me completely
I was seven when The Fellowship of the Ring movie came out. Still my favorite movies and books to date. Clicked so fast when I saw this.
I was 10
I was 9 when it came out 10 when viewed it.
Dom wearing that top with Dreamer on it resonates with me. In the 1974, when I was laid up with a succession of operations on my legs, I was reading and re-reading The Lord Of The Rings, and Supertramp's "Dreamer' from their album, Crime Of The Century, was seemingly on endless loop on the radio, and my turntable. That song, well, the whole album, Always invokes LOTR for me

Didn't think I would care about anything other than lotr stuff. But I actually really enjoyed this throughout. Really hyped for the next one!
I love how Billy Boyd said the line "what about second breakfast?" .. just completes everything.
He got the mount doom question correct.
You asked how the “second breakfast” scene has made it into our daily lives. Aside from it being a quote that regularly makes its way into conversation, it is also the name of a segment on our RUclips channel in which we taste foods from around the world-Second Breakfast and Afternoon Tea.

My very first intensely immersive book reading experience was when I discovered Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book when I was maybe 9 or so. I still remember feeling the experience of running through the jungle with Mowgli to be amazingly palpable. The ability of a fiction writer to flesh things out to that degree is admirable.
