This tutorial shows how to setup Scan to Email with Embedded Web Server on the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283 printer.
The printer needs to be connected to the network.
We used Gmail as there is an additional layer of security needed before it can be scanned successfully.
As of May 2022, Google has removed the "Less Secure App". We can still setup Scan to Email using "Generate App Password" feature.

This is great, solved my issue. Short story for those who don't want to watch: turn off 2 factor authentication and turn on "less secure apps" in your gmail settings.

New question: something in Apple (my desktop), HP (printer) or GMAIL changed because now it’s says “cannot resolve the SMTP server. Check the SMTP and DNS server settings with your system administrator or Internet Service Provider”. Any ideas??

Thank you for explaining this process in the manner in which it should have been from the beginning - SIMPLE, STRAIGHT FORWARD AND STEP-by-STEP!!!! Your instructions were succinct, clear and did what HP should have done. I would love to return to the days of true anticipation and joy when obtaining a new piece of technology/equipment rather than dread knowing that I'm not an astrophysicist to learn how to use it! One small step for mankind by learning how to scan - yea me :)

Consider using the Apps Password method, which would not require disabling the 2-step auth and allow less secure device settings.

I couldn't figure it out!! This video solved the issue in less than 5 min.... The smtp address doesn't have "@" but a "." That messed me up for a hot minute..lol

The faint image of the from Page 2 (onto Page 1) was primarily due to the big font size for the letters we used to highlight the page numbers in this tutorial. In normal documents, the faint image from the scans could not be visible or noticeable.

Fantastic. Followed the instructions and "Yes. Worked, at last!." Agree with other comments. Nothing from HP comes close to this sort of help.
Then followed it exactly the same again for a second email account and I'm stuck on the failed test message. Any suggestions??.
Thanks Very helpful. I like to have the two step verification. You only have to create a password for appas, create a new one, call it HP Printer and place it where you would wrtie your email password on the hp form. Thats it.

Thank you for the detailed steps, I've used this video a few times when changing google passwords. Unfortunately the "Less Secure Apps" is no longer in use as of May 30, 2022. At this time I cannot connect via google to send scans to and from my printer. Do you have any work around for this? I appreciate any assistance you can provide. Thank you!

I'm at a loss here. What cables do I connect & to where on the printer in order to get the printer to display an IP address? I have purchased an Ethernet cable in order to connect the printer, but, that does not seem to change anything, even says "Network Cable: Disconnected" when in fact the cable is connected. I'm unsure if it is in the correct port, but I put it in the one that it fits in on the back, just below the USB hub.

Having the same issue on an Outlook mailbox. (username and password incorrect) It's not the HP printer as I can authenticate using another Outlook domain account using smtp.office365.com port 587. Thoughts?

This video is great and helpful, but it is unfortunately now outdated. Google has recently disabled the use of less-secure apps as of May 2022, and an app password is now required.
I am commenting this because every once in a while, I try to scan something important and it doesn't work either because of a wrong password or update. But I now know how to combat this.
When you follow this vid, you do everything up to the point where you go to the security tab of your gmail account. From there, you need to activate two step verification and then create an app password under the category of "Other". When you are given this app password, put it in the SMTP password and everything will work out fine. I hope this is helpful.

I have an sbc account. I entered the IMAP/SMTP with my password. I tried with SMPT. Then IMAP and nothing. Then it requested I tried a different port. Which for IMAP is 993 that’s not listed there… long story short… I need help please. TIA

Try to enter your full email address in username and correct Password
still says username or pass incorrect. i hate those problems. why they made it difficult.

Thank you so much for your informative and really helpful video regarding "Scan-to-Email". I would like to let you know that your video solved the problem. The solution you provided in the case of "username or password is not correct" error was not referred to by anybody else.
The only problem with the solution is choosing less secure in Gmail and I am surprised that why there is no other solution. Thanks again.

You can enable the 2-step verification (make it secure) but that would require the use of the Apps to generate a password.
