Home Built Personal Helicopter Takes Flight For First Time

  • AviationExplorer.com - This homemade personal helicopter is built on a 3 pole support structure. At the top are 2 rotor blades that rotate opposite of each other to prevent the common helicopter characteristic of having the aircraft pull to one side therefore needing to apply pedal input. This homemade helicopter does not have a contained structure fuselage but more of a small seat to sit on as the pilot is under the main engine housing and all controls are mounted on the pole structure / handles.

    There was a comment made earlier about 'ground effect' and loss of lift if this gets too high above the ground. I think there is something to that. The pilot did not prove that he could go higher, so I am sceptical that there is enough power to make this a viable flying machine.
    But I will say "hang in there fella!"

    Its actually pretty genius... The one problem that needs to be addressed is the possible losing a limb, or head by the low propellers, he can solve that easily by installing a cage type cover where the wind can go through and the pilot will not be able to go past that screen, or cage....install a comfy chair, etc, a little polishing out the kinks and I'd buy one, if the price is right.

    The rotor system configuration he's using is called called 'contra-rotating', and is used on many different full sized aircraft. A good example of how this principle actually works is to have a look at the small children's rc helicopters around these days. They work on this same contra-rotating principle. 'Energy equals mass times speed of light' has nothing to do with basic flight dynamics, and I assure you that this video is no hoax.

    • @timothydavenport2714
      @timothydavenport2714 9 лет назад +1

      Morten with uncovered blades that low to the ground, extra precautions have to be made over traditional aircraft. Helicopters have uncovered blades, but they are high enough that you can walk under them without being injured. I'm 6 foot 6. Walking near this guy would end my life. Propeller airplanes also have uncovered blades low to the ground. However, they only operate at airports. And the direction of airplane blades are predictable. This device can be used anywhere, including a city park. And the blades are capable of going in any direction. If he loses balance, he could veer off like a deflating balloon.

    booth319,
    yaw is controlled by the little rudder vane in the back.There's only one throttle.The back leg is connected via a "U" joint to the two front legs.
    It should be possible to build this for under 10 grand.
    It's not a kit,the guy constructed it with off the shelf parts and some custom jobs.
    He's been flying this contraption for years and his head wasn't chopped off nor did his hands go numb from vibrations,he actually never had any accident with it.
