    One thing I always appreciate about Gyro’s is that clutch engaging and the dramatic wind up before starting the takeoff like a fantastical magical time machine spooling up to send you into a distant past, none more so than in this machine. I am impressed by how balanced and smooth she is, hardly any vibration at all, given the crazy physics of what’s going on just about your head, that is impressive.

      2 strokes generally produce higher HP per lb... thats the whole reason for thier use, in small power tools also, you can use a tiny 2 stroke engine in a weed eater instead of having to put a heavier 4 stroke in there that would usually need to be twice as big or turn twice as fast as the 2 stroke to make similar power.

      As long as you have rotor RPM, and/or can trade altitude or airspeed for rotor RPM - you should be able to land this thing.
      Basically, if i understand the concept of an autogyro correctly - its like having a helicopter in a constant auto rotation condition.

    • @adawg3032
      @adawg3032 2 года назад +6

      Actually it wouldnt be that bad since the rotor is a free wheeling rotor and controls are still effective as long as you utilize your altitude properly. you could land this if the engine died by nosing down since controls are cable pulls on the stick. this thing cant hover like a helicopter it uses the forward motion from the prop to freewheel the rotor. the same mechanic is used in an engine out helicopter landing scenario called autorotational landing. having more forward velocity and altitude gives you more range to find a good option to emergency land. its similar to a fixed wing but instead of a fixed wing its an autorotational rotor wing.
      on startup there is a clutch that can give the rotor initial rotation but once you release the clutch and start moving forward the rotor is just spinning by itself from the moving air and providing lift at the same time since the leading edge and trailing edge have different angle of attack therefore different aero drag
      if the control cables however were not properly installed then yeah your doomed

    2 things about this video are super cool.
    1) It shows the public that flying in an aircraft is not some grandiose, exclusive occasion. You can actually say "I built an airplane" with nothing more than a bit of metal, a small motor and some stick-to-it-ness (plus some OK spatial imagination skills).
    2) That rickety little thing is YOUR personal airplane, where you can share the skies with helicopters, expensive Cesnas (and other mass-produced private aircraft) and commercial airliners. You can FLY because of your own creation.

    This. Is. Amazing. 12 years ago I learned to fly a Microlight and bought myself a Mainair Blade which was a lot of fun. 4 years ago I earned my full PPL with IFR and IR and having flown a 50 year old Cessna 172, I now own a Pipistrelle Panthera with 420 hrs logged total. But honestly, seeing you fly your very own "Little Nelly" like this with the camera angle you used which honestly gives a real "seat of your pants" flying experience, I have to say this looks like the most amazing fun and I have to try it. The way she handles, turns on a dime in the air and skims the airfield before you finally come in for that feathered landing shedding all that speed so quickly. Absolutely incredible. And well done to you for building it yourself... I know how pleased I'd be to accomplish such a thing.

    Sometimes I swear I have these reoccurring dreams exactly like this. With the fields and trees and everything swaying back and forth. Except I’m not using a machine to fly rather I’m simply flying. They almost always end up with me spinning frantically out of control rather terrifyingly too lol but for those few moments I feel so free and it’s worth it. I have a horrible irrational fear of heights btw but flying is different. I’ve never actually piloted anything but I’ve flown on a plane once, rather recent too after I’ve had these dreams. But i was not scared at all. I was excited and amazed to almost live out my dreams. I wonder, are there any pilots who have an irrational fear of heights but love to fly? For me it’s standing still when the fear kicks in. Like multiple times I’ve tried to conquer that fear. I’ve jumped off a 15 foot high bridge into a river about 20 times and it was never any easier lol so I never conquered it. I also climbed my local mountains and again the fear never diminished even slightly. Yet I love those dreams still
