  • On July 30 2016, Skydiver Luke Aikins, made history, when he jumped from 25,000 feet out of an airplane without a parachute, landing safely in a net set, setting a world record.
Luke, who was 42 at the time of the jump, is a third generation skydiver, who has been skydiving since the age of 16 and has deployed a parachute more 18,000 times over the course of his skydiving and BASE jumping career.
Luke is also is a safety and training adviser for the United States Parachute Association, where he provides advanced skydiving training, to elite military special forces.
After jumping out of the Cessna airplane at 25,000 feet, Luke quickly reached a terminal velocity of 120 miles per hour.
Using his GPS, and only the air currents around him, he lined up his fall to the center of a specialized 100-by-100-foot net, which was designed to stop Luke's fall, as softly as if you were to stand on a trampoline, and merely drop onto your back.
The total time from jumping from the plane to hitting the net, took about 2 minutes. But when you are falling from 25,000 feet into a small net you can’t even see from 25,000 feet, I bet it felt like a life time.
    Thanks for watching.

★★★ *FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE VIDEO / FACT UPDATES* ★★★
*1) Is he wearing a parachute under his jacket?* - No he is not, Just before climbing into the plane to make the jump, Luke Aikins said "he had been ordered to wear a parachute by the event organisers, but indicated he wouldn't open it. As the plane was climbing to 25,000 feet above the drop zone, he said the requirement had been lifted and he took the parachute off for the jump"
*2) He almost missed the net, he was very close to the edge* - Yes he was, he stated in an after jump interview, once he knew he was over the net, he just focused on rolling over and not worrying about being perfectly in the center. Here is the link to the after interview, the responce is at the 1min mark - ruclips.net/video/h8WJckkj-QM/видео.html
*3) Just before he jumps at **0:19** is he throwing a Nazi Salute?* - He is instructing his camera man that "it's time to jump"
"Comment by Harry Hog" - it's actually a military free fall hand and arm signal for the execution command of “GO” it’s standardized so it can seen in the day or night
★ Here is a diagram from a Military hand signals PDF - photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipMttkQbzS0n5-Yo3qwdOByN5FowfNhKUCplVCJm
★ Here is the PDF Link - fas.org/irp/doddir/army/tc3-21-60.pdf
*4) What is the point of wearing a Helmet?* - Helmets are for when exiting the plane (jumping out) in case they hit their head on the plane they will not be knocked out when falling. Also you can actually survive a fall to the ground at terminal speed, but would still take severe injury including head injury. But I think you will find the TV show, Insurance company and officials required he wore it. It's also a precaution in case you hit one of the other jumpers in mid air and knock each other unconscious.
*5) A man jumped out of a plane with no parachute, through a hole in a roof, onto a trampoline first* - That was a fake jump (CGI / Clever Editing) and a publicity stunt for a trampoline park - Here is an article link www.snopes.com/fact-check/scared-chuteless *I also did a story on that jump here is the link* - ruclips.net/video/7hG44arJ00s/видео.html
*6) He was not the first, in 2012 a man jumped out of a plane with no parachute, and landed on boxes* - I have had a few people mention this stunt, and I cannot believe it needs to be pointed out to these people, he wore a WINGSUIT! and glided onto boxes. TOTALLY DIFFERENT STUNT! *I also did a story on that jump here is the link* - ruclips.net/video/7hG44arJ00s/видео.html
*7) How did he adjust his trajectory to hit the net?* - During free-fall a skydiver can perform a variety of maneuvers such as spinning, moving forward, moving backward, just by changing the shape of his body to "catch" the wind a certain way. In other words subtle changes with his arms and legs.
*8) How high is 25,000 feet in metric?* - it's 7,620 mtrs, although why anyone really needs to know that is beyond me, you can clearly see it's HIGH UP!, also planes fly at 30,000-35,000 feet, so clearly it's high. Mount Everst is 29,030 feet or 8,848 mtrs.
*9) Why jump from only 25,000 feet, why not higher?* - Ann Kathrin said in the comments "it was an unpressurized Cessna 208 Caravan with a service ceiling of exactly 25,000 ft."
*9) How did the cameraman land, what happen to him?* - You will notice in the video at 2:58 that the 3 extra parachuters next to Luke (all in black) opened their parachutes, the footage at 3:11 is from a GoPro on Lukes chest, which you will see at 1:07
*10) People keep jokingly commenting "How did that net support the weight of his massive balls"* - Well it almost didn't, here is a video Luke uploaded 4 months ago, AFTER I made my video of the jump, so I was not aware of it. It was a drop test of a weight bag to test the net system, and on the first test, the weight went right through the net. This is why I believe there were 2 nets, in case he fell through the first one. LINK - ruclips.net/video/WXggFfVsYiE/видео.html
UPDATE 19.5.21: I spoke with the Stunt Coordinator and it turns out the net in the video link was just a substandard quality net to test the theory of catching a certain weight, after this test they upgraded to a better material net.
*11) What about the wind blowing him off course* - They would not have performed this stunt on a windy day, there would have been a maximum safe wind before getting approval for the jump by safety coordinators and insurance company. There was a time where they would not launch the Space Shuttle on a windy day, because of the problems it creates with the launch. They would simply postpone the launch to the wind dies down or until it's a non windy day.
*12) What is the point of the jump?* - Now these are my own opinions on this question, but what is the point of climbing Mt Everest, or any mountain for that matter, and people will tell you "because it's there", Luke achieved a few things doing this jump, that 99.9% of people do not achieve climbing Mt Everest.
    - He was the first to do it, and being first always makes anything worth it as you get mentioned in books as being the first, such as the Guinness Books of Records.
    - He was already highly experienced and skilled in skydiving, this is just another feather in his cap, showcasing his skill.
    - To do something in his field of expertise that has never been done before and to show it can be done, like the first back flip on a Motorcross bike or Monstertruck.
    - This was televised live on TV, making it even more impressive, can you recall the last televised climb of Mt Everest? no me either.
    - He is now listed in the Guinness Book of Records for this jump.
    - All these things combined, now make him a much more sought after skydiver trainer or consultant.
Now all of the above points may be valid, but it could also be as simple as, he just wanted to do it

Scares me since I love him been friends since we were less than 5 years old. I take solace in knowing he told me “just remember, If I was to die, I went out doing what I loved” it would still be incredibly painful & tragic to lose such a great friend & person so young & I can’t put into words how much I don’t want that to happen.

What's SO incredibly beautiful about watching this is not only are you free falling, but you're falling so fast it almost looks like you're floating in mid air. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL watching this!

    • @nikos4677
      @nikos4677 4 месяца назад

First You are not free falling because there is air resistance which doesn't fit the definition of free fall
Secondly. He is definitely not going faster as if he were on a free fall because of air resistance so as stated in the video he reached a terminal velocity.
Third. What are you referring at the end reminds of einsteins most happy thought. You can search that up. The conclusion is that he is floating in mid air and actually it's the ground and the air that is moving upwards towards him

    • @pokejinwwi
      @pokejinwwi 10 дней назад

@@nikos4677 Well if you want to get technical... TL;DR, you are incorrect.
First, in this case, "freefall" refers to the period of skydiving when you are not using a parachute, which in the video, is all of it. You have to know to look at the context.
Second: Who said that he's going faster than if he were on free fall? You're arguing against a non-existent argument here.
Third: I'm assuming you watched Veritasium's video and got lost when he brought up the equation about four-acceleration in non-inertial frames. If the ground and air is moving upwards towards him, then why isn't the earth expanding? The simple explanation for this is that Earth isn't accelerating in 3-dimensions, it is in 4 dimensions, like Veritasium explained in a pinned comment. And in 4-dimensions, acceleration is deviating from flat spacetime into curved spacetime. Earth curves spacetime around it, thus deviating from flat space time. that is why it is accelerating, it has nothing to do with third dimensional acceleration unless you are looking at specific frames of references, in which case it would also not cause a paradox due to the fact that everyone has a different frame of reference.

    • @flybeep1661

I'm a skydiver and I'd say the total opposite. Basically when jumping I would feel the most anxious because you can barely see your target, the closer you get and the bigger the target becomes and you're on track the more confident you'd feel. At the final end, just turning is merely a final action, at that point you'd be fully confident you'll hit the target. One thing I wonder is why jump from 25.000ft? That's not standard jump height, 12.000 to 13.000ft is standard. It doesn't really serve much purpose other than to complicate the jump with oxygen. He didn't need the altitude to get to the target. Jump exits are always done right above the target (flying against the wind direction) and accounting for wind drift.
