Yeah, perspectives are crazy in the automotive community when you look at different applications. For example: 2100RPM on an over the road commercial diesel truck is passed redline, but that's basically idle speed on a B-Series Honda engine lol.
How much who does the stock unit actually support. I've seen claims of 1000 compressor map seems to not quite support that....best ice seen was wayyyyyyy outside it's efficiency range....
Can you get a 171702 from a junkyard Detroit 60 and rebuild it with a 360degree thrust bearing? I was considering an S475 TO6 for a 410 ci FE Ford gasoline 93 octane in a bumpside F100, or a pair of GT45s. I like the idea of the 171702,S475 TO6 volute with the stock iron manifolds reversed and a pair of 2.25 pipes off of the manifolds to the Volute and an intercooler to feed a blow through 850 DP, with 8-9 lbs of boost with a roller cam topped out at 6200 rpm. Would a used one be possible to find? Or do you sell reconditioned ones? Thanks.
I bought a eBay Detroit diesel 60 turbo. Listing stated 171701, but turbo that arrived has a Garrett compressor cover. Any ideas what I actually own? 02-07 year
I'm looking as putting a turbo on my Gen 4 LS2 403 stroker I'm looking at getting an s400 but its an s498 or a s493 as im chasing 800-1000whp the thing im not sure about is the 98 comes with some options which I dont which to get 1st is a 102/91 and a 109/99 turbine wheel option and the other is turbine wheel option t6 divided 1.32 A/R or t6 decided 1.58 A/R and t6 open 1.58 A/R these I have no idea what to order I understand the difference between 75mm, 80mm, 88mm, 93mm, and the 98mm and hp rating but not the rest I can build a stout LS but I've never buggered around with turbos
Those numbers are the Size of the Turbine Wheel, and the A/R ratio of the Turbine Housing. Basically you size that to what you wanna do with the Vehicle. Makes a big difference for instance if you building an 1/8 mile Drag Racer, or a Standing Mile Type of Vehicle, The Smaller the Wheel and Housing the Better it be for the 1/8 mile stuff, And you'll want Much Larger for the Long Distance Stuff. But there's other things to consider also, such as how's the Engine Built, how big is it, the Compression, the Camshaft, and So On, and also the Vehicle, the Weight, type of Transmission. And Always remember the rule of Bigger isn't Always Better, cause then you run into Turbo Lag.
Yes and No - there are no designated diesel S400 turbos, but there are many different variations of the S400. Many auto applications use the S400 with the smaller turbine wheel, where as majority of HD diesel applications use the 96/88MM turbine when using the S400 platform.

If the housing is damaged, you will likely spend more time/money/frustration rebuilding it then its worth. Personally, I think you'll make out better in the long run just buying a new one. Hello. I have a 60 series 14L. I installed a 12.7 manifold and a 171702 with just 515hp. I'm having lag when I'm shifting. I was thinking to get a K31 BUT I saw a 1.15 AR housing that fit my 1702 BW. 1- DO I have enough hp to use the 1702? 2- Do you recommend the 1.15 AR housing on a 1702 for a 515hp Detroit series60 14L? Thanks in advance!!!
Swapping out for the 1.15 housing is the cheaper and quicker solution, but that small of a housing will run the risk of overspinning the turbo on a Detroit. If you overspin the turbo, you will decrease the life span of the turbo or just snap the shaft and be dead in the water. Realistically, the K31 would have a much better powerband and minimal lag on your application, but I too would be tempted to atleast try a 1.15 housing first since you already have the 171702
I put a k31 turbo on my 14l ddec 5 have it set at 525hp 1750 tq. It runs great only thing is I can’t get it to boost no more then 32 lbs is that normal??
