      JESUS CHRIST died for us on a cross for our sins. 3 days after his death he resurrected and was, is, and will be The LIVING GOD. Repent from your sins and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior in a prayer and also ask for the HOLY SPIRIT to come into you in that same prayer as well and have FAITH in JESUS CHRIST. You could come to Jesus Christ as you are, but once you accept Him, you have to become new, change, and be born again, and also turn away from your wicked ways. Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. God Bless You. The Bible is the true word of God. Please read the Bible and you will see Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Praise only be to GOD. Give your life to CHRIST. JESUS CHRIST IS COMING SOON FOR HIS CHURCH.

    You're the best beginning piano / piano accompaniment / non-classical piano teacher on here. I think your reasoning for not including the key in many of your videos is good, if I'm understanding you correctly.
    Let's face it: there are plenty of pro musicians who don't understand keys. I think most musicians I've run into couldn't give you a decently precise definition of what a key is. And I'm not saying that's a problem; the reality is that music to a lot of people is just working on execution so they can eventually express themselves and have fun. If you haven't already, maybe you could help some people by making a separate video going over how scales relate to modes, which relate to keys, which relate to chords, etc. and how it isn't necessary to know in many cases and instead is mostly useful for communicating with other musicians. Someone certainly isn't an inferior musician if they don't know much about music theory building blocks, but I suspect that feeling is drilled into a lot of people who have attempted music in the past.

    Your channel is aimed, you say, at beginners and making it accessible. In this, it succeeds wonderfully. Well done! Yet beginners eventually become intermediates and some knowledge of music theory can be very useful, even if it is just knowledge of basic points such as keys, tonic, subdominant and dominant triads. Otherwise musical growth is stymied. Perhaps it might be helpful at various points in your tutorials to mention when these events occur, even if you say that understanding the theory isn't important but the student might recognise it recurring in other music?

    As they say, you can’t please everyone, but the majority of us subscribe to your videos because they are the best out there. There will always be the clash between the music fundamentalists and those that like to stretch the boundaries of music (creativity) and if it turns into an awesome song than they are doing something right! Btw, I like music theory but as an engineer I also understand and appreciate innovative thinking. Keeping people in music theory boxes stifles creativity….which is your whole point of this video.

    Perhaps related to this question, but more practical might be: what if it's too high/low for me to sing it well? How then can I transpose it? If middle C seems quite high as a starting point, and then I'm having to go down an octave to sing the chorus, does that mean it was the wrong choice?

    • @PianowithNate
      @PianowithNate  4 месяца назад +1

      Yes it's often the right move to transpose a song to fit your voice. An easy tool would be to use the transpose buttons in Ultimate Guitar to put a chord chart in a different key, or the transpose feature on digital piano can do it automatically for you. Transposing on your own is a great skill that is too much to explain in a comment here, but I do have a course that teaches it: www.pianowithnate.com/keys-to-chord-progressions
      Cheers!

    For me , as a solo guitarist, it's quite easy to understand "What key is this song in?" . You just take the first chord of the song & use pentatonics and blues scale to improvise (to be on the safe side:). Besides, you've got lyrics sheets with chords - don't people see what key this song in ?)

    • @PianowithNate
      @PianowithNate  5 месяцев назад

      Totally! Indeed, pentatonic scales are great because they are "safe" as you said i.e. they eliminate the most potentially problematic/clashy notes from the major scale. But even with a pentatonic scale that matches the starting chord and overall key of a song, some songs will veer off in strange directions and have chords in them that will clash with that scale.

  • @danielhower5950

    I think you are right. Let's be honest. You already say which chords are used. Sure if you added Roman numerals and more piano theory might be helpful for a few people, but I am pretty sure most people are happy with the way you are teaching.
    The lyrics and the chords are wonderful and the layout is also really good.
    I guess using captial letters for chords and lower-case letters for single notes might be one way of improving.
    Besides that a transposed version (as you did for one of the songs) into another, ideally guitar friendly key which is a bit (roughly a third?) for singer with a lower range might be a great addition as well.
    I know that there are already website which provide the lyrics and chords for many songs and some of the (like chifra club) have the option of transposing songs easily.
    Long story short: You are a wonderful teacher and singer.

    I hear many times different use of the word "key". In "press a key" it should be fine, thats any note on the piano. But what about "its in the key of c"? Some refer to a particular key only as the tonal center, the home base that you build all the scales from. In this sense the key of c includes (for a seven note scale) all seven modes (i.e. Ionian, dorian etc) I hear u use the "key of c" as only referring to the C major scale, and it seems that the majority use it this way, but is it strictly correct (theoretically)? Isnt c minor in the key of c; (just the ionian mode)? And "key signature" is used just to identify the flats and sharps; ## is normally either the D Major or B minor scale, but could also in theory be E dorian; all these three scales however are in different keys. But as an intermidiate beginner Im only trying to figure this out by my self, i should practice my instrument more instead😂 Edit: and then I heard the rest of your video where u explained it in these lines:) Love ur videos by the way.

    • @PianowithNate
      @PianowithNate  5 месяцев назад +1

      You did a good job calling out two things I wish I could now fix about my video :) indeed sometimes I (and many others) casually refer to notes on the piano as the physical "keys" which is totally seperate from the idea of keys/key signatures in music and i should have avoided that here.
      The other is clarifying...casually when I or most people say the "key of C" it means C Major...if it is the key of C minor, I would always say C minor and never just C. Similar to how people casually talk about major and minor chords...if a chord progression is C major, A minor, G Major, I would likely say "C, A minor, G"

  • @johnmac8084
    @johnmac8084 5 месяцев назад

    I guess you could say it's in a tonal centre rather than a key, when it uses chromatic notes, but then that would require further explanations as well. I can see it's a bit of a no win situation for you Nate 😀

    • @PianowithNate
      @PianowithNate  5 месяцев назад +2

      I think the move for me going forward is to say the key i.e. "this song is mostly in D major" and then casually mention that a few chords fall outside of it

      Fair enough but scales with different ascending and descending versions are kind of beyond the scope of this channel…my primary interest is teaching beginners without confusing them. I should have picked a different example song, there are plenty of songs I teach that deviate from the key in strange ways that can’t be easily summed up by one scale

    I understand all points of view on this subject. Just say at the start of you video what the key of the song is and be done with it. It only takes 4 seconds. If you don't do it the someone else on RUclips will and they will get more likes and views than you. A simple step to make you and your viewers better. Better is always better.

      I appreciate it! My question though: even when the song only loosely sticks to that key? Because sometimes that creates more confusion for people
