The first time I ever heard this song was at my friend’s drum recital. The crowd went so crazy for the jump back, I assumed it was an on-the-fly call. Then I heard the original...
4/4 over 5/4. It works well with the bass line as its on the 1 and the 'and of 3' in 5/4 but on 1 and 3 in 4/4. If you do the maths, the bass line rhythm for 1 bar is a minim tied with a quaver and then the same again to complete the bar, with the polyrhythm the drums are playing 1 and 3 which when isolated is the same as the 5/4 rhythm. However throw in the 4/4 crochet subdivisions and you get a crotchet tied with a semiquaver in 5/4. Sorry for rambling, but it's just so cool.
@@ProdbyUrbanCloser Sput is disgustingly talented. I got to see him with Ghost-Note at the beginning of this year before Covid nuked the world. He's incredible (along with the rest of GN).
Snook That’s a stupid & disrespectful thing to say yo! Like really??? Sput helped build the sound SP is known for. Sometimes you should keep your opinions to yourself! We go back over 30yrs +, and we’re close in age, but he’s been a big influence on me. I know for a fact that’s the same for Jamison & Larnell as well. Especially in how we approach the SP drum chair. Again, I know everyone has an opinion, but that was disrespectful.
The requirements for membership in Snarky Puppy are simple: 1) Be an absolute virtuoso on your chosen instrument and 2) Play long, complex arrangements from memory, flawlessly. In other words be 1 in 1,000,000 to get an audition.
My favourite Snarky Puppy song. The one that introduced to the band whilst studying in Uni. From this one song, I've got the albums and been to all their London shows!
I played this song so much so much around my friends it became a meme. This song means a TON to me and I appreciate this upload SO much. Thank you SP!!! I'll see my fourth show sometime soon.
Man I wish the video of them performing skate u at this same studio session was still on RUclips. Haven't been able to find it in forever and it's my favorite version of skate u
Lovely! Remember hearing a version of this track at GUM Fest 2019. Mark Lettieri started Flood with an Insane Guitar Solo!!! And then, the groove came along. Wonderful Memories :). Thank you Snarky Puppy for the 10-year anniversary edition of FLOOD!
The first time I heard this was live in Dallas and I had never listened to them before. Little did I know that my music tastes would completely change after listening to these guys. These guys are truly amazing.
The whole thing is sharper. I can hear things I missed before. You brought the percussion forward and let me hear the bass riffs too, nice job. The original felt more like an LP, where everything blends. This brings out each of the musician's performances. Both are different, and both are fabulous.
This music tells me a message: "things will be fine..." I got (a lot of ) tears in my eyes... Thank you, guys...thank you!!! Alex, São Paulo, Brasil - 22/jul/2020
I feel like the original mix embraces the context of the room it was recorded in, it's quite warm, dry, mid range very present. It's as though the new mix aims to contextualise the instruments into a new space, leading to a greater distinction between low end and high end, a scooped mid sort of sound, more use of spacial elements and effects.
Yeah dude, you think that's sample replacement? Think I can hear the original snare subtly from some overheads, plus watching the video you can see ghost notes being played that don't make it into the audio.
@@timangus that's what I got too. I love the way the strings and the percussion sound on this remaster, super crisp. I also think the change in timbre on the synth solo is cool. I can't say I'm in love with some of the extra wetness on the horns. I also like that Chris bullock's sax is mixed a bit higher on this one but it could have come down a bit. I also wish the bass had a teensy bit more prominence in the mix.
@@vicentealvarado5608 wetness is usually a reference to the amount of reverb signal sent to an audio source. The most noticable difference here would be Bill's solo almost halfway through the piece.

this was the first ever Snarky tune I listened to after a wild ride of clicking on related videos from an Evan Marien/Dana Hawkins video quite a few years ago :D
The tones and the mix on this are phenomenal. Outstanding job! Love it! (oh, and of course, the writing and playing are from another planet - good) Is this the same Dave McNair that did the Sonny Landreth recordings? Who also worked at Jack Rock's studio here in Austin? If it is... great job, Dave!
It almost kinda looks like the audio was done on its own and they are just playing some random old footage of another recording haha! This remastered version is great, first song I personally ever heard from Snarky 8 years ago.
snarky puppy it's one of that bands you can hear 100 times and still fells like the first time

I love the way these folks pay homage to the jazz sounds of the 70s - the kind of jazz I grew up with. Especially the horns and electric piano.
Not sure why the remaster was needed. The original was wicked. Suuuuuuch an amazing band.
I agree with you. Why mess with perfection?
Agreed. To be fair, the changing of the snare sound is my only gripe about it. Everything else sounds pretty dope.
