I hope you have those conditions turned on again as I am up there for the kite and wing nationals in a couple of weeks and I am keen to finally get some sup foiling in
If you had to shape/design a board just thinking in hand paddles, would you go much narrower and longer? Or do you think you can maintain a kind of a short board (around 6’3”-6’5”x18”) and go thicker to maintain the volume?
Hey James! Any tips for foil position in relation to where your knees are placed (when kneeling in the proper position on the bird for buoyancy trim)? Should the lifting center of the front foil be just behind your knee contact points? Or a bit further back (like mid shin)? Just wondering what you found to be most effective.
At 1:50 the downside becomes obviously apparent. With a paddle - would've been up easy. Great Entry to downwinding but probably needs good bumps- but there is still wear and tear on your body. You need flexible ankles - a kind deck grip and good elbows. I have none of these things. :). Great Vid Jimmy!
agree... with you about 1:50, lots of points in that video that I reckon he was sorry not to have a sup paddle.... For me as a newbie dw'er I'm thinking- With hand-paddles I could probably buy a sub 19inch wide board from day 1. There's no way I could dream of balancing a board like that in ocean conditions with a sup paddle as a beginner.
Volleyball kneepads to get started, but before long you're spending much more time on feet than knees. This was pretty amazing from James - he's had literally 1,000's of hours mastering the SUP paddle in various disciplines, compared to 45min of trying hand paddles to do the above. Very cool.
@@davewestfoilsave, I’m older, 71, building a 8’x21” DW. I would never be able to SUP it. Looking forward to hand paddles exclusively for DW and Surf. We even made the bottom flat from rail to rail for stability, damming the stickiness.

You should have included a side by side comparison with a paddle to see difference. Fun stuff!
I like it! I'll have to add it to the list

@@jadearama That's a good point actually. You could invest in a narrower board knowing that you'll get use out of it as your SUP skills progress
