A few things I want to say after seeing this… 1. Thank you for mentioning Lucy Ball in this! Getting Lucy’s seal of approval was exceptionally difficult from what I’ve read, so for those two guys to get it speaks volumes about them! Physical comedy looks really easy on paper but the reality is that it’s incredibly difficult to perfect. You need exact right chemistry plus exact right comedic timing. Mark and Bronson had that, there haven’t been any physical comedy duos like them since Perfect Strangers ended. But, it was one of Lucy’s favorite shows at the end of her life, watching it religiously every week pretty much up until she passer away from what I read! She even invited the guys to the set of Life With Lucy, her final sitcom! Here’s an extra bonus fact about the show some fans may not know-the 8th and final season was only 6 episodes long, if I’ve understood what I’ve right according to Mark the entire cast did those 6 episodes without contracts as a thank you to the fans for sticking it out to the end! They wanted to make sure it got a proper finale. There was a BIG gap between the end of Season 7 and the beginning of 8-over a year! Working without a contract is unheard of, you would NOT see that happen these days!
I try to watch this series once a year. It"s a show with a lot of heart, physical comedy, and some good moral lessons along the way. Growing up i never knew how much this show had an impact on me until i saw it 10 years after i stopped watching it. I'm now 42 ahd still love this show. We also never would have had Family Matters without this show.
Shortly before Perfect Strangers debuted, Mark Linn-Baker was a guest star on an episode of ABC's Moonlighting. I remember him giving an incredible dramatic performance. Then Perfect Strangers hit the air, and I remember thinking, "Is he funny enough to do comedy?" Yes, yes he was. BTW, years later, we got to see his dramatic side again when he appeared on a couple of episodes of Law and Order: Criminal Intent as an autistic man.
I'm so glad your doing perfect strangers. I hope you continue to do an entire TGIF lineup video. TGIF was everything back in the day. I still watch perfect strangers on Pluto TV on hit sitcoms channel

I loved this show. It's hard to make slapstick work in modern times (i.e. anything after the Three Stooges era) but they did it very well in Perfect Strangers. Here's something you didn't mention: In the first season, Larry and Balki's landlord was a regular character. Mr. Twinkacetti was played by Ernie Sabella, who would go on to voice Pumbaa the Warthog in all the animated Lion King movies and series. And I remember Sara with Geena Davis. Not a great show, but Bronson was hilarious in it.
To this day since I was 4 years when I first saw this on ABC'S TGIF. I was hooked on those two cousins. I'm 39 and still can't stop laughing at this show. Without Perfect Strangers, there wouldn't be a TGIF during the 90s.
Very well put together! Although I haven’t watched it in decades, as an 80s kid, it has fond memories for me…particularly the first few seasons. I started to fall off in later seasons.
With all the revivals the last few years, i kinda wish they'd bring back some of the tgif shows. I know Jaleel White doesn't want to do family matters again, but perfect strangers would be great to bring back.
As a millenial (hate that term), we grew up with almost everything gen x did plus a little bit of our own. (Born in 92'). I think our 2 generations have more in common than any other. Perect strangers is a great show!
@@SkywalkerDavis respectfully, while you may think that, that was not my personal experience. I had no idea about the actors going to Yale! In addition to Mark Linn-Baker (who also directed a season two episode of Family Matters where Carl and Urkel get stranded on a boxcar train trying to catch a criminal) Melanie Wilson played a different character in one of the later seasons of Family Matters. Along with the original Beverly Hills Cop as Serge, Bronson Pinchot reprised the role in Parts 3 and 4 of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise. I love his hysterical foreign accent (i.e. calling weapons "Wee-pohns). Finally, while I'm disappointed that Jaleel White (Urkel) doesn't want a reboot (though he reprised Urkel for an animated Christmas film) I would certainly love one for Perfect Strangers. I watched the series from start to finish during the pandemic.
Not sure if you were aware of this but Alisan Porter (Curly Sue) is also a terrific singer... she won the 10th season of The Voice... just found your channel... automatically subscribed Sir😊💙
I loved this show. My two favorite episodes are where Balki and Larry study karate as I had just started in jr. high. My second one was when Larry was going to meet Jennifer's mother (I had a huge crush on Jennifer) and gets amnesia....."Hello! My name is Cousin Larry App-le-ton!"
My favorite. I also love how the theme was not sung in that "mumble" way that made most sitcom theme lyrics semi unintelligible like Different Strokes or Facts of Life.
There are many people who don't believe me when I tell them that Family Matters is a spin-off of Perfect Strangers. If they see this video, they'll know I'm not lying. Harriet Winslow was my favorite character on both shows, Balky It's my 2nd fave from PS.
Perfect Strangers is underrated as an 80s sitcom. Bronson Pinchot and Mark Lin Baker had a chemistry that really wasn't common with shows at that time. Mypos was supposedly based on Cyprus. I think they did a good job of imagining it, if you compare it to, say, St. Olaf, Minnesota, from Golden Girls. St. Olaf came across as being full of idiots, whereas Mypos didn't get the same reputation, as it was more a vehicle for Balki to explain part of his personality.
It was definitely a great idea that they made-up Balki's country. It gives writers free reign to come up with all kinds of gags and lore without having to accurately represent an existing ethnicity. It's the same reason why I think Superhero cities should be made-up (Metropolis, Gotham, etc.) rather than real-world cities (New York City, typically). Creative liberation.
Carl Winslow did appear in an episode of Perfect Strangers before Family Matters started but if I remember Carl and Harriett was said to have lived in the same building as Larry and Balki and did not have kids yet!?
1. Even when I was a kid I knew Mypos was fake.❌ 2. Did not know the dog name thing.✅ 3. Knew/remembered Family Matters was a spin off of Perfect Strangers❌ 4. Found out about Louie Anderson a few years ago.❌ 5. Did not know the Yale connection.✅ 6. Dance of Joy lore is not new.❌ 7. Did not know about Tom Cruise advice.✅ 8. Did not know/care she was the daughter of TP guy 🧻☑️ 9. Curly Sue who? ✅ 10. Did not know about Lucy 👩🏻🦰✅
I Worked at VW Headquarters of America north of detroit, back in 2009-2010-ish, Bronson was the Voice of the Black Beetle that Interviewed Celebs. They did a Huge Unveiling for all of us Employees at a Huge Venue and got to Meet Bronson. He Laughed His aR$e Off and Said "NOBODY LIKES THAT MOVIE" Really Cool Dude New SUb: Dryden, Mich.
Speaking of shows that didn't work out. There was a pilot filmed for a TV version of Six Pack in 1983. It flopped. Had it been picked up, Don Johnson wouldn't have gotten his iconic role of Sonny Crockett in Miami Vice. Instead, the role would have gone to the runner up, Ed O"neal.
I knew most of the facts about the show I watched it when it was on but I remember the newspaper years better then the thrift stores seasons and I loved it’s spin off family matters
I just cannot imagine Louise Anderson as Larry, just as I cannot imagine John Posey as Danny Tanner in Full House (RIP Bob Saget). but I do remember the cartoon though. Family Matters was a favourite sitcom of mine, but not one of my top favourites. My favourite was Small Wonder, followed by Punky Brewster, Full House, Step by Step, My Two Dads, Who's The Boss?, Saved by The Bell... I wasn't really into t he physical comedy (except for Vicki doing those amazing things in Small Wonder). But I do like the old slapstick comedies, like Laurel & Hardy, and the old silent movie classics, plus the cartoons like the Looney Tunes and Silly Symphonies. We did not get those ads here in New Zealand, so I did not know who 'Jennifer's' Dad was. Speaking of Jennifer, she was my favourite non-core cast. As a teen at the time, she was smoking hot. But I cannot remember Larry's boss,... at all.
@@GenXcellence77 I totally agree. Sure, the special effects were so noticable, but it sure was a fun program, especially when people underestimated what Vicki could do. Oh, and oh no n-n-no no no, how could I forget about the Brindles!? They were so annoying, but in such a fun way.
@@GenXcellence77 And if you do a Small Wonder video please mention about the planned but never went into frution spinoff with Vicky's evil robot twin Vanessa. 🤖📺📼👍
Gen X-cellence: You did forget that Bronson Pinchot did his role on Perfect Strangers after he appeared in the movie Beverly Hills Cop! The producers saw him in the movie and to give him his own show. Think about it! No Perfect Strangers or even Family Matters if haven't been Beverly Hills Cop at all! So there period and that's that at all!
Did I forget, or did I just list ten and not list it? LOL. There was so much more I wanted to list but I try not to keep you wonderful busy people for too long! 😎
@@GenXcellence77 Not really! I thought I might have said something about it to you! You should have mentioned Beverly Hills Cop in the first place just it started on your list!
@@GenXcellence77 Actually Bronson was in a another tv show before Perfect Strangers called "Sara" lasted 13 episodes not to mention he appeared an episode of Amazing Stories and a tv movie Between Two Woman as a photographer the same year Perfect Strangers premiered on ABC. His first role was in Risky Business (1983). Bronson took the role of Balki on Perfect Strangers because he needed the money at the time and was struggling as a young actor even after just being in Beverly Hills Cop. A Young Tom Cruise actually told him not to work in tv.
@@GenXcellence77 Thanks for mentioning about Alisan Porter wait a second the Mandela Effect changed the spelling of her name as I have it spelled correctly LOL! @@GenXcellence77seriously! Most of the TGIF shows had crossovers with each other. Urkel invaded several shows like Full House and Sabrina. Sabrina was later in Step By Step and Dana from SBS was on Boy Meets World. This gets brought into the 21st Century with Girl Meets World and Fuller House. And every show that they had character crossovers with. It all comes back to Larry and Balki!

And we automatically became best friends! 😎😂. Thank you for being a part of the family! (And yes she is a fantastic singer)
Great video. I wanted to go to Hillman College from a different world. Didn't know it wasn't real. 😂
You are not alone! I wanted to attend as well. I did end up at an hbcu though lol
How come you did not mention Pinchot’s role in Beverly Hills cop with Eddie Murphy? That was his breakout role.
I agree 1,000% on Lucille Ball.. I watch "I Love Lucy" religiously and she was a genius! Still is 😁
I'm still a fan!
@GenXcellence77 same here 😁
This was a sitcom where I liked the supporting characters more then the two leads. Jennifer/Mary Ann, Lydia, Harriette, etc.
very cool! Do American Ninja next!
Fantastic episodes!
My favorite. I also love how the theme was not sung in that "mumble" way that made most sitcom theme lyrics semi unintelligible like Different Strokes or Facts of Life.
I loved the Alice theme. Both intro and outro were great.
Linda Lavine wasn't very friendly to other women but she sure could sing. ❤
There are many people who don't believe me when I tell them that Family Matters is a spin-off of Perfect Strangers. If they see this video, they'll know I'm not lying. Harriet Winslow was my favorite character on both shows, Balky It's my 2nd fave from PS.
The first 5 seasons are great
Perfect Strangers is underrated as an 80s sitcom.
I agree
These two were so funny together
Agreed!
been watching it on Pluto and j7st can't stop laughing 😂
Pinchot was also in Beverly Hills Cop using an accent when he offers Eddie Murphy a coffee, or espresso.
Serge! 🤓
@GenXcellence77 He was hilarious!
@GenXcellence77 BTW....loving your channel! You are bringing back my childhood memories with each video.
@@kimberlyhood-lester1450 Thank you much, and welcome to the family!
Carl Winslow did appear in an episode of Perfect Strangers before Family Matters started but if I remember Carl and Harriett was said to have lived in the same building as Larry and Balki and did not have kids yet!?
@primekiller5729 Carl Winslow appeared in 2 episodes of Perfect Strangers. 👮🚓🦺📺
1. Even when I was a kid I knew Mypos was fake.❌
2. Did not know the dog name thing.✅
3. Knew/remembered Family Matters was a spin off of Perfect Strangers❌
4. Found out about Louie Anderson a few years ago.❌
5. Did not know the Yale connection.✅
6. Dance of Joy lore is not new.❌
7. Did not know about Tom Cruise advice.✅
8. Did not know/care she was the daughter of TP guy 🧻☑️
9. Curly Sue who? ✅
I told him I grew up watching the Show, and his Awful TV Movie "The Langoliers" was my All Time So Bad It's Great Movie.
He Laughed His aR$e Off and Said "NOBODY LIKES THAT MOVIE" Really Cool Dude
New SUb: Dryden, Mich.
That sounds super cool
Speaking of shows that didn't work out. There was a pilot filmed for a TV version of Six Pack in 1983. It flopped. Had it been picked up, Don Johnson wouldn't have gotten his iconic role of Sonny Crockett in Miami Vice. Instead, the role would have gone to the runner up, Ed O"neal.
Loving that firebird pic!
I knew most of the facts about the show I watched it when it was on but I remember the newspaper years better then the thrift stores seasons and I loved it’s spin off family matters
I too were more into the years at the paper
I think the years at the newspaper were the best years.
But I cannot remember Larry's boss,... at all.
Small wonder is one of THE most underrated sitcoms of all time!
Larry is the blueprint of George Costanza
"I am 48-I Loved this Show! Watched it Religiously!!"🙂👍💯
You and me both my friend
I think… that Perfect Strangers and Cosby Show debuted on the same night.
Did you know, Allison Porter appeared in Parenthood 1989..she played Taylor the middle child..with siblings Kevin and Justin.
No I did not actually and I have seen that movie dozens of times. Now I have to go rewatch lol
@@GenXcellence77 Thanks for mentioning about Alisan Porter wait a second the Mandela Effect changed the spelling of her name as I have it spelled correctly LOL! Not too many people mention that info about her and you are welcome!👍 I remember her in Curly Sue and Parenthood not to mention Ivyann Schwan who was also in Parenthood and Problem Child 2!👶👩🍼🎥📺
"Dont squeeze the charmin"...wow...if you remember seeing those commetcials first hand you definately are getting up their in age.
Lol this is true but I've learned age is a blessing. Many people never had the chance to reach my age
11:38; Bill Maher has discussed this show on his podcast.
I heard that they weren't strangers at all and were actually quite close.
So they didnt want to offend anyone, what people today would call "woke."
With so many crossover shows through Urkel like Full House and every other show that was linked after that, can we call it the PerfectStrangersverse?
You may be on to something lol
@@GenXcellence77seriously! Most of the TGIF shows had crossovers with each other. Urkel invaded several shows like Full House and Sabrina. Sabrina was later in Step By Step and Dana from SBS was on Boy Meets World.
This gets brought into the 21st Century with Girl Meets World and Fuller House. And every show that they had character crossovers with.
It all comes back to Larry and Balki!
@@GenXcellence77 Urkel also appeared on Step By Step. Both Don Knotts and Richard Kline appeared on Step By Step. 🤓📺🤔👍
One thing you missed,in the first season or two the paper high society writer Ms Lydia ,later on in life became the grandmother on the george Lopez show
Oh, snap, what part of the DMV you from? I'm in Catonsville MD, just outside Baltimore
DC/PG county. Im familiar with your city, I used to work in Woodlawn! 😎🤓
@@GenXcellence77 yeah, that's just up the road, and you're just down the road now. I never knew she was from down that way. Well, let's hope we both make it to the conference championships this weekend. It's be awesome if we had a battle of the beltway in the Superbowl, but I'm afraid we'd have to let y'all know you're just renting
@@garyhall7867 Oh I show love to the Ravens until it comes down to the battle of 295....then those birds must be NEVERMORE! lol
Steve Erkel is the bane of television
You're from the DMV?!?! What part? Grew up in Annapolis here.
Between DC/PG county!
Mr Whippel crossed over to the dark side 😂
😂
I always thought Balki's girlfriend Mary Anne was funny.
I agree!
@@GenXcellence77 Sadly actress Rebecca Arthur (Maryann) revealed some things about Bronson that would shock you! Well she said he was sweet in he early days of the show but than turned into a Jeykll and Hyde once the show became more popular and well you know he... with her. She never spoke a word about this. Bronson held all the cards she said.😢🦺📺🙆
It's surreal that Balki Bartokomous begat Steve Urkel, yet it makes "perfect" sense. (See what I did there?)
I see what you did there. +10 style points lol
Larry was NOT a CHICAGO native he moved there from Appleton Wisconsin
I was just thinking about this show the other day... it was an annoying show. I did like the actor from True Romance and Beverly hills cop though, Balky. He was a good actor, always entertaining.
I do NOT remember Billy from Who's the Boss? at all!! I'm thundergunning the whole schmear right now so I'm sure I'll get to him soon, but shit man...I do not remember a Billy on that show.
LOL keep watching, he was there for a whole season near the end.
Best episode was when they took karate and dressed up as ninjas
That one was a classic!
@ balki hiding in the bookshelf when Larry gets home from work still kills me when I think of it.
Here's an odd Family Matters connection. In an episode from the final season, Mark Lyn-Baker appears as Harriett's arrogant boss, Mr. Benner.
Good eye!
Just fyi it's cast* not casted.
How about naming a dog "ROOFis"?
😂
Great show! Too bad its spin off gave us the vile Erkel
Yeah. It’s New Charmin, Mr Whipple. You fascist!
😂
Bronson was not pleasant to all 3 main female costars.
Oh no!
@@GenXcellence77 read that review blog; also , that "Two guys into Fridays" interview with Rebecca Arthur.
I heard that too
He was accused of sexually inappropriate behavior. That is hard to believe about Bronnie.

🏝I know you mentioned without watching the video yet that Louie Anderson was originally cast as Larry Appleton in the unaired pilot. The clip was uploaded online years ago but has since vanished without a trace and wasn't included on the Perfect Strangers season 1 DVD! 🦺🐑🗽🌆P.S. Also lost media is the season 3 intro that features a shining sparkle of light💡that shines over the Perfect Strangers logo for season 3 only. When the DVD release for season 3 was being put together they couldn't find the master tape📼of that sequence.
You are on point as always my friend. I certainly did mention that!
