What Happened to Perfect Strangers (1986-1993)?

  • Strange pairings in TV Sitcoms are nothing new. Series like The Honeymooners would have the sort of violent buddy’s of Ralph and Ed, The Flintstones would have Barney and Fred, and of course The Odd couple would have Oscar and Felix. But in 1986 a new duo would be added to this list with the sitcom Perfect Strangers, and Friday night TV viewing would never be the same. Cousin Larry and Balki would become a hit power couple for viewers who would fall in love with the quirky pair and their misadventures trying to make it in Chicago. The series would become a favorite for a number of fans not only in the states but eventually around the world and would spawn a spin off that would become just as big a hit for ABC.
On this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten our destination is America or Burst as we look back on the sitcom classic, Perfect Strangers.

Him meeting Urkel, who comments something like "I like your wool vest. It looks very Muposian." To which Balki replies by speaking in Myposian, which Urkel understands and replies in kind. As a kid, this was one of the few live action shows I liked, prior to TGIF really kicking off (another was Get Smart). I remember watching the show with my dad, so when the first season was released on DVD, I grabbed it. Watching it as an adult, the show resonates with me a lot more than any of the other TGIF shows and still holds up. It's not about a wacky family (with kids, I mean), and it's not about people trying to make it in Hollywood or New York. It's a show about two 20-somethings (if that old) being 20-somethings. They're poor (though that apartment looks expensive. They have crappy retail jobs. They don't have a weird, impossible lifestyle. It's much more grounded, and even though there is a lot of comedy, it isn't wacky or silly like so many of the TGIF shows and other sitcoms end up being. It's a show about two young adults being young adults.

David and Mark were both great. And it was easy to tell they had fun making the show.

This was one of my favourite shows when I was a kid. Then I saw Pinchot in "The Langoliers" and I mourned the death of Balki! 🙂
Also, you overlooked Sam Gorpley! I loved that character and the actor who played him.

And i'd like to add that perfect strangers has what may Be the most slamming theme song from the 1980s.

That show and actually the whole tgif lineup for a latchkey kid with an overworked single mom was an incredible formative experience filled with solid moral lessons, inspiration, and hope that the world is a good place and that if you work hard and chase your dreams anything is possible, that is what is missing in society today positive role models but I am thankful I grew up in a time of perfect strangers, goonies, and a full house so thank you for this trip down memory lane where I still live in my own world!! #myreality

At one-point Balki and Larry were supposed to show up in the pilot for the series Family Matters, but it never happened.

Loved this show as a kid, from the first time I saw it. The actors' classic "odd couple" chemistry and linguistic and physical comedy and characters' heart made it endearing. I'm wondering if it would have been better if Larry had been an only child (instead of from a big family), with Balki becoming the brother he never had. The show was lucky to get Bronson Pinchot... He would outshine even Eddie Murphy in the Beverly Hills Cop movies (making Eddie the straight guy to Bronson's improvisational comedic acting).

I'd absolutely love it if they brought the show back for at least a season. There have been a couple of revivals that have worked for the most part. Fuller House, Rosanne/The Connors, Frasier, and so forth, so why not? I loved the show growing up and it was part of my childhood.

Even though Perfect Strangers is probably one of the first sitcoms I can remember being old enough to recognize as a show I like, next to Parker lewis can't lose, its one of those shows that if you binge it like I did last year on Freevee, you'll see how formulaic it is lol!
It's just the same bits and jokes almost every episode painted on a new wacky scenario lol. I mean, Im not complaining. They made it funny, they made it work. But if you binge the episodes consecutively, you can start to predict when certain jokes will happen with frightening accuracy lmao
But I wouldn't trade it for the world 🥰 Good childhood memories.
Fun Fact: Bronson Pinchot's character, Balki, was originally written to be named Vev. At the time, Pinchot's sister owned a dog named Balcony. The family affectionately called the dog Balki... and Pinchot pitched it and the character Balki was born.

After seeing it misspelled way too many times in fans' comments here, I really want to say that Mark's full, professional acting name is Mark Linn-Baker, not Mark Lynn-Baker, or however else it's mis-written. His full, real name is Mark Linn Baker. Linn is his middle name, that was made up by his father, and Mark was known as Mark Baker or Mark L. Baker in high school (I'm not saying how I know that). When he was starting to be a professional actor, there was already another Mark Baker in the actor's union, so he (Perfect Strangers Mark) got creative and combined his middle and last names and put a hyphen between them, to create Linn-Baker. I'm 49 1/2 years old, and have been a big Perfect Strangers fan, and a big fan of Mark and Bronson, ever since the show was originally on, as part of TGIF. Plus, I had a big crush on Mark for quite a long time during those years, and for quite a while after, too! Great memories! From Cacilie
