This is an anime based on the childhood experiences of the original author, Akiyoshi Nosaka. It's a very sad story.

Best anti-war movie ever. What makes it so tragic was that this is based off true events The real "Seita" wrote a short story as a way to help cope with his feelings over the situation and change a few parts of the story. But most of it was true. And the ending of the story was EXACTLY how it happened in real life (including all of the dialogue.)
