My thoughts on the Leica SL in 2019. Four years after I declared it my camera of the year in 2015, I still adore this camera, and here I will tell and show you why!
Bought a used SL 2 weeks ago which is like new, along with an extra battery, RRS plate and a Leica M adapter to use with my 50lux and love it. I've had M-P 240 and and M9-P and loved those too but having more difficulty focusing with the RF patch. It's a great time to find killer deals on SL's as people are dumping them in anticipation of the SL2. Yes it's 4 years old but with have 2 card slots, wifi, gps and weather sealed (with the proper lens), it was just ahead of its time at launch. It's a great compliment to my film MP that I photographed my kids births which will never leave its stable!
When the SL came out 4 years ago, I loved it so much I purchased two of them. Although, I did traded one of them recently for the Q2, I completely agree about the original SL having that something special quality about it. I hope the SL2 is improved in all aspects cuz if not, it may not be compelling enough for people to upgrade from the already amazing SL!
Over the years I have noticed that what people refer to as “Leica look” are just fast double Gauss lenses with low element count that give very high contrast and saturation. Nikon also has lenses like this, namely the AI-S 85 1.4, 50 1.4, 35 1.4, 55 2.8, 200 f4, 135 2.8 and even 300 2.8.
Sometime I describe it as photograph that looks in perfect focus but when you pixel peep nothing seems very sharp. Like a Monet painting. It’s in the formula of the glass production and the elements and recipe they use, it can’t be duplicated. I think during the war year’s Voigtländer had access through industrial espionage and come very close if not the same. Zeiss was busy with light weight designs and fast manufacturing and wasn’t interested in image quality like Voigtländer and Leica. Their designs were to complicated, heavy, and expensive for most military use and Zeiss went a different direction, and while the Zeiss designs were popular because of the low weight, small size lower cost, easier produce they suited the post war market perfectly. Zeiss never got the glass recipe. While Leica and Voigtländer and Zeiss designs can and have been stolen and used the actual glass formula has survived and has never been replicated. While Voigtländer lenses are designed in German and manufactured in Japan the glass billets are still made in Germany and delivered to Cosina, interesting....
I'm shooting professionally with the SL and it's awesome, love it with my M glass but have just bought the 75SL and it's lovely, a few flaws and a few quirks but it's a lovely camera.
Its love to here someone so must in love with a camera. I know that i do not have a SL but I love my Hasselblad X1D just the same.
I know the owner of this channel doesn't reply .. but he is missing that the Leica SL also can mount direct without any adapter Leica TL lenses... and with adapter from Leica, you can also mount the Leica S medium format lenses which that are sick amazing .. also the cine lenses from Leica .. cause he named the few lenses he got and say thats it .. but its not really it.
and the Leica SL doesn't look like the Panasonic S1 ..... its just different camera .. and for the price .. its not as its expensive as he said .. cause compare it to the Nikon D5 and Canon .. same price ... but Leica keep maintains the price better that others ... so it got it value.
I'm the same way about my Olympus OM-D 5II. I love its image quality to price point. I know its not the best sensor and has a lot more noise being an M4/3 but it's porfoct for my everyday carry.
The SL is like a Canon 1D/5D and all of its mark versions, a Nikon D700/D3, a D4, a Leica M8, M9, Hasselblad H3D-II, H4D, etc.... Cameras that never become old, never fall apart when you handle them right and just work as they are intended to.
Can’t wait to see SL2. Heard a rumor that it would be announced in June.
It's 2021 and I am eagerly awaiting the Typ 601 I ordered earlier today.
how is it? I've been itching to pick one of these up to use with my M glass
How is it?
@@edwardbristow2276 I picked up an SL a few days after replying, my only "complaint" coming from a Panasonic S1 is that the higher ISO isnt that great(I probably wouldnt want to go past 3200)but its not really an issue since I tend to shoot at 800 or less. Everything else on this thing is amazing, and its a sexy looking and feeling camera!!! Stoked with it so far
Considering that you can now get Sigma and Panasonic options, it’s probably even more worth it now.
Waited for this😉👍🏻👍🏻
The camera and the lenses for it are huge though. I don't think I could lug it around all day, especially the 90-280.
Can't wait for the L system next year when Sigma and Leica have all their new stuff out. Never-mind all the crazy Sigma AF primes. Maybe Panasonic will come out with a consumer body.
After immersing myself for four years in looking at cameras trying to really understand how they work, and what’s best, I think the interface and controls are paramount to your success. It has to make sense to “you”. Be honest with with yourself on what you are trying to achieve in your photography. Look at Instagram, every camera and lens system has look, I love the Leica look, and the interface. I like photos out of Canon cameras but the big black blob of buttons on their camera bodies is a big “no”. Ask yourself which photos you taken in the past mean the most to you....buy a camera that improves on that type of photography. My most serious photography happens on trips and travel....landscape, street, gardens, inside churches, museums, fast on the fly tours trips...second is family events. My head wants the SL, but reality says Q2....
Did you get the Q2? I like all the specs, though I think 40 mp would have been more than enough. The macro is a great feature. What I really don't like is the 28 mm lens. Of course, cropping to 50 or 75 is possible in-body. I actually want a discreet Q2-P. 😏
Christopher Tan I bought a new Leica SL right after the SL2 was introduced at a very low price. I shoot M glass, from Voigtländer, the 21mm F1.4, the 50mm F1.2, the 75mm F1.5 are the kit for now. I knew a fix lens was not going to dampen the interest and interchangeable lenses was going to be a must. I can’t rule out still buying a Q2, it’s still the perfect travel camera, for those on the move and don’t want to fuss and carry “stuff”. The images out the SL with Voigtländer lenses are jaw dropping. Manual focusing is so satisfying too. It connects you to the process. And the 4 pad interface is revolutionary.
Its a nice camera. Sadly the price with the SL lenses is a bit out of range for a company. You need to have a way to defend that kind of investment. Happy you address that issue also. Sometimes one can get the feeling RUclipsrs have unlimited budgets. As a biz its great you can write off, but also you need to be able to recoup the investment in a crowded market space.
Nice channel, not sure why I never came across it before
looks awesome , what is the adapter you recommend please
The original SL is definitely a legendary camera. Sure there are more modern sensors but the SL was ahead of its time and still takes amazing photos. I passed on the Q2 because there is something about it not quite there for me (probably the low light performance). I think the M10 has slightly better high ISO than the SL but then again it doesn’t have that beautiful giant EVF and clips highlights faster than the Q1 and SL.
Ok I give up...what is the ‘EVF’?

Sorry…what I wanted to inquire is if your saying that the Q2 is the superior EVP?
Desperately keen for the S1 + ART lenses, and especially being able to use a Foveon camera (due 2020) with M lenses.
Just bought an SL last week!! This gives me a little more confidence in making sure I made a good purchase... do you know anything about the new sigma adapter coming out (EF to L) at all? Love your work!!
It's going to be out towards the end of the summer! Will be priced the same as the sony version
At the moment, it doesn't work with the SL...
Of course all great cameras are relavent even in 2023. It just depends if one wants the latest and greatest.
I really understand what you mean, the focus System and the low light capabilities need to be revisited. I would love to see a 280-600 mm lens for the SL my god that would be lovely.
Still a solid camera body and price is better now. But still v expensive as compared to those latest camera body now
at this point, sl is about 1400 - 2000 dollar camera. looking how DSLRs cost about the same, this might be a great move.
Are these camera good in 2020? The prices of thee are looking very very tempting.
The marketing for Leica gotcha man... If it wasn't so expensive you probably wouldn't like it.
I think the SL is that legacy camera, a classic before it goes out of production and replaced by SL2. Even seems to be more desirable than S1r as its newness wares off.
Review the SL2-S :)
5- axis and smaller body would be really nice
I've been shooting on the SL, and it's nice, but nothing too special. What I really want is the Leica Q2!
Honestly for portraits you really dont want more than like 12-16 MP. Everything over will just ruin your day because it resolves every flaw. So yeah, 12-24 MP is probably enough.
Camera Conspiracies sent me here...
the leica looks beautiful!!
I’m hoping SL2 is just a 47mp upgrade and EVF upgrade. Nothing else.
Dr Kaufmann said that the chassis styling will be more elegant and less brutalist.
Fellow Citizen Yeah, if it’s to off track I’ll just get the old one....I know the old has the Leica look, will perform better in low light and cost less....
As much as i love my leica SL but I sold my leica sl about 6 months ago as they are too big and heavy , too hard to walk all day wit the body and 2 lenses . I think the Panasonic s1 or s1r is the leica SK mk2 with less than half of the price and i may buy them to replace my leica SL . For me Leica M10 is still the best leica not Sl or Q .
I cant use Leica because I really need technological advancements like auto diaphragm for my manual, manual focus camera ;D
after all Panasonic camera released,SL2 should be a add of S1,S1R,S1H. Also the price.
What do think of the bundled price, SL with 50mm 1.4, for $7995. Camera and lens was $7500 and $5495 respectively, let’s just say $4k each now bundled. What deal. I’m ready to jump at that price. The S1r just dropped to $2995, very tempting but it’s not a Leica.
Go install wikibuy and purchase it for the lowest price.
BUYING IT REPLACING MY A7iii AND ITS FUCKING AMAZING
What's your option so far? I'm thinking of grabbing one as a second cam to my A7R3. I know the focus was fast on the A7iii , so how does the SL compare in your use?
Is it possible to control the aperture on your Canon lens with that adaptor?
Of course it is.
Can you use Leica M lenses in the Panasonic S1, I mean, at full quality?
Made my move. Bought an SL, $4100 new....the build, the controls, the proven history of no issues....I am putting a Voigtländer 50 1.2 on it..... the S1r was considered and so was the SL2....removing the 4 button controls and changing build to three pieces was to far to go for me, 47 megapixels and new EVF plus $2k extra didn’t seem worth it.
This is exactly what I am considering. I have an M9 and some lenses, as well as a Q. How have you found it?
tunajames I bought mine new off Amazon in December there are some new ones there....$4130. What a fantastic camera. Once it comes and you have it in your hands you know you have something very special and unique in your hands.
William Inbody just ordered one .😎
David Alan Harvey went over his book, "Based On A True Story," and pointed at two pictures and said, "See, this one was taken with a Leica, and this one with an iPhone. And you can't tell the difference." That's all we need to know.
diesel828 ok, shoot a wedding with your iPhone X... 🍀
How is the bokeh highlights from the 24-90 lens?
Dude, you bought the SL 3 times?????
Its actually 2500 used now? Think it may be time to get one lol
I saw one on FM for 1900... so tempting
Its a cool camera but it is a step behind the latest Canon, Sony and Nikon in so many ways. Perhaps more importantly, the camera and its accessories are over priced. Hey, wish I had one!
what are your top cameras of all time?
Recommendation. Try using s lenses on sl with adapter ,, magic
The only fantastic feature of the SL is the price, and not in the good way
Sorry sold my Leica sl and buy Panasonic s1r so much better camera , I wonder how Leica can sale Leica sl2 if they made one and price will be 2 or three time more than Panasonic s1 .
Put the crack pipe down. The SL is in another universe.
2nd best EVF? What's the number 1 then?
Leica S - no doubt - best in world
There are better options now for that price range.
The Leica Man trū dat my bruthu, trū dat!
people who are into Leica’s dont worry about the annual 1,000 depreciation on the digital camera bodies. They’ll just sell em off at half the price and buy the latest release easy.
LOL! A 4 year old 6000$ camera, still relevant?! Are you kidding?!
Let's say you keep the body, the color science, the form factor the sensor and all, even keep the lenses.. but change the logo to Xiaomi, and I promise you the Mojo is gone
Hey! What about in 2023 ? Planning on getting this one or the sl2. I primarily do photo only
A great piece, but please, look up “Simplistic.”
👍
"Industrial area" is a nice paraphrase for an illegal garbage dump.
;-)
Question; Which set would you prefer, and why? Leica SL with a Leica Summilux M 50 1.4 or a Leica SL2 with a Voigtlander Nokton 50 1.2 ??
It’s better to have the first choice since you’ll get summilux 50 1.4 rather than nokton 1.2
@@brainz406 thanks! Just bought a few days ago a new SL with the Summilux 50 1.4 a magical combination!
@@Chasjazzez Happy to help!
You really should invest in Leica lenses.
買ったその時から値段が下がる、家電とはそう言う物だよ、、レンズは生きるけどね
Will the Canon 50/1.2 AF on this body?
or .. get the leica s!
No, they haven't been relevent for a long time.
Nope
images look like film...good.
Comparing a Sony to a Leica is an insult to the history of photography. Sony is not a camera company.
C'mon, man. That's bollocks.
They are, and have been for decades.
@@Biosynchro they're a consumer electronics company. I still think they are a camera company but that's what they are.
Saying Sony isn't a camera company is like saying BMW isn't an automotive company.
Sony bought photo cameras production from well known Konica Minolta
i love your passion !
