The Leica SL (Typ 601) is a modern mirrorless camera which was released in 2015. In this full review of the Leica SL I discuss what sets it apart from the newest Leica cameras including the Leica Q2, Leica Q3 Leica SL2, Leica SL-2S, Leica M10, Leica M11, and Leica M11-p: the price. The original Leica SL might be the only affordable Leica from the digital age. There are many different mirrorless cameras the Leica SL needs to compete with, the Sony A7RV, Sony A7IV, Lumix S5II, Fujifilm X-H2, Fujifilm X-T5, Fujifilm X100V. There are many options in the price range of the Leica SL, and in this review video I explore why the Leica SL is worth buying in 2023 over all of the other options. This video contains my experiences with the Leica SL, using it as my only camera for an entire trip, together with a Leica 50mm Summicron. The Leica 50mm F2 Summicron-R was the only lens I brought with me on this trip, setting an interesting creative challenge for my street photography and landscape photography.

The setting, the camera, your jokes, storytelling, the editing and music. Everything about this is amazing! Love your videos!
Thanks so much!!
All images are incredible. Great work!
Many thanks!
Found my new favourite RUclipsr. This video is the epitome of creativity. Not too serious. Not too playful. Just the perfect amount of humour and seriousness that it fills me with joy! Too good!
I appreciate that more than you probably think! Thank you for the kind words!! 🥰
I did the same thing this summer. One camera (nikon d7500), one lens (28mm) and it turned out to make me more focus and i had a tremendous amount of fun with street photography !
Love your videos and approach to photography, keep up the good work !
That’s awesome! It’s definitely a really good creative challenge.
Thank you for watching!!!
Interesting that your channel appeared in my timeline - even more interesting, or rather far better, I find your content. Appeals to me very much, I'll take a look around during the next days. Many greetings from a German guy from Arizona
Thank you so much man! I really appreciate it 🥰
Great entertainment as always. Your point regarding 24 MP being more than enough is true. I would be so cocky to claim that even less is enough. Of all (digital) cameras I use, I use my Nikon D700 ~90% of the time - and that is a 12 MP full frame. Never craved for more resolution. One just have to get tje composition right so one does not have to crop like crazy.
Keep these great videos coming.
Cheers from Vienna
I agree, I also found the 12MP of the Nikon D2X to be enough. Maybe I should make another video about that camera…
Thanks for watching, more videos coming soon 😊
I have the d700 too and its my most used camera. I also have the panny S1 which i like for video, flippy screen, low light and it being more silent. But the rendering of the d700 is still the best imho
Danke! 🥰
A fantastic video with great editing and music. Great to see Mallorca, been there many years ago 🙂 keep up the great work. Cheers from Andrew in Ottawa Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you! Will do! More videos coming soon 😊
Bis zum Ende geguckt! 😁
Das Foto im Inneren der Kirche mit dem bunten Licht des Fensters ist echt geil! Ansonsten natürlich auch gute Bilder. 💪
Danke fürs zuschauen!!! Freut mich sehr dass es dir gefällt 😊🙌
The SL (601) still sells for about USD2,000. You can get a brand new Nikon Zf for that money... Or a Lumix S5II. Food for thought!
The video I was waiting for this weekend to prepare some good popcorn. Congratulations keep it up
Haha that makes me happy 🙏☺️ Will definitely keep it up, more videos coming very soon!
great pictures, great vids too. So experiment successful!
Thank you! Yes I think the experiment went perfectly 😁
Loved many of the shots and your storytelling! The leica SL sure sounds like a compelling camera…
What about the battery life in the end? Could it stand up to the task?
Thank you! 🥰
For taking a couple hundred photos in a city at a leisurely pace it did great, actually surprising how well the battery held up. But if I was taking photos for a client I would definitely bring spare batteries 😂
That summicron lens is one of
Leica first SLR lenses. That is
1963/64. You also used the
Sun hood properly. Be proud
show the brand. Hope to see
More of your work
Great video! Thoroughly enjoyed it.
I appreciate it! Thank you for watching!
A well made video. Fantastic photos and the processing was quite nice. Very apt for the season and the location. I liked the review from a user perspective and not the tech details and so the photos made sense. The video is on the long side but I definitely liked it as it was like a nice travel video while discussing a camera/lens. A question though. Can you charge the battery in the camera using a USB cable, say, with a powerbank or something?
Thank you so much for watching I really appreciate it! I don't think any Leica camera allows for in-camera charging unfortunately.
I just bought a second hand SL. If it ever autofocuses a lens I have failed my intentions when buying it. Great review!
Salut, au lancement elle avait un autofocus lent, ils on fait de mise à jours? Tu es content? Merci
The next day… Never mind… After succumbing to another earth rotation…😂😂😂
Well, I watched to the end. 🙂
This camera always gets very well reviewed, even as it approaches its tenth anniversary. It's now about nine years old, give or take, and it still produces better images than a lot of new cameras from other manufacturers. In fact, you may have noticed that some photographers have not upgraded to an SL2 or SL3 - they just like the SL that much.
I think this camera is very well suited to adapting vintage SLR lenses. The camera isn't that cheap, but some old lenses are pretty good, and very affordable, such as those by Pentax. (Which makes me wonder why anyone would buy those Chinese lenses?).
Perhaps one day very soon you will be able to afford a digital M body. The M 240 is still a pretty good camera, I think, and that might be the one you are looking at buying. Maybe? If the M9 were cheaper, that could be a good option, although I do not like the shutter sound.
I think that all of your photos have terrific colour. But, for some reason, your video footage looked quite poor. Take that how you will. Also, I think you used too much music, but that is obviously a matter of taste. Anyway, I enjoyed this video, and I look forward to seeing more of your work. Cheers!
The Leica SL came out in October 2015, just less than 12 months before the Canon 5D Mark IV came out so yes it is still very much worth it.
Oh my god I need to buy this camera right now!
Haha you could buy it through one of my affiliate links in the description 😉
I subscribed after the diesel oil pan joke. That got me good 😂😂
Hahaha I appreciate it man
Okay, now pay attention:
- stalactites (with a C for “ceiling”) hang down, and
- stalagmites (with a G for “ground), come up from, well, the ground!
That's a good way to remember haha thanks 🙏
And that stalactites have to hang on tight.
You are one of the very few reviewers of Leica SL who actually managed to shoot beautiful images out of this camera. Thanks.
How would you compare sl with gfx50r?
this is such an underrated channel
Thank you!
Endlich ein neues Video!
I bought a mint SL with box for CAN$2000 2 days ago. 🎉🎉🎉
In German: Stalaktiten („Titten“) hängen
Great video and storytelling. You may have caught the Leica virus. An SL2-S has your name on it.
Nooo I can't, the newer Leica's are too expensive 😂😭 Thank you for the kind words 😊
Specs say it has a sensor stabilization. So does it have, or not?
NO. No IBIS in the SL type 601. Only appeared in the SL2 ad SL2-S
But the SL 24-90 and 90-280 have VR inside.
Yup made it to the end
Nice, thank you for watching!!! 😄
❤
Bist du der Bruder von @Wichtiger. Ihr seht euch so ähnlich 😂
for the most part, any photograph that doesn't have a human face in it is automatically boring to me... idk what it is about "street photography" that bores me to death
Getting a really good image in street photography is quite difficult and I think that’s what I like about it. It’s just fun to “hunt” for a good image when you have a bunch of unpredictable variables, and you need to act quickly.
@@futc.photography i agree that the process itself can be fun :)
