  • The bells are rung every Sunday and for special services such as weddings. If you are interested to find out more about bell ringing at our church please contact the Parish Office.
Midhurst bell ringers speak of duty at tolling bell for late Queen.
Bell-ringers Harry Carter and his father Nick take turns to ring the tenor bell at St Mary Magdalene & St Denys Church in Midhurst, West Sussex to commemorate the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The volunteer team of campanologists are performing in a way no other living person has, to mark the death of a monarch. The bell was rung for an hour between noon and 1pm, by the pair of local builders, on the day after The Queen’s passing. The pair were joined by Nick’s daughter-in-law and grand-daughter as they watch the clock to complete their task.
Bell ringers in Midhurst have spoken of their duty of tolling a bell to mark the Queen’s passing.
Nick Carter, alongside his son Harry, tolled a single bell at St Mary Magdalene & St Denys church for an hour to mark the pass of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, September 8.
Harry said: “The process isn’t particularly strenuous, it’s more the physical process and we were fortunate enough to swap halfway through whilst the bell is still ringing, which is a bit of a feat in itself, but it was easily doable when you’ve done enough ringing and such.
The father and son bell ringing duo also spoke of their duty as bell ringers to carry out their job as ringers throughout the mourning period.
Bell-ringer Nick Carter rings the tenor bell at St Mary Magdalene & St Denys Church in Midhurst, West Sussex to commemorate the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The bell was rung for an hour between noon and 1pm, by local builders Nick and his son Harry, on the day after The Queen’s passing.
"It’s a duty really, to do it. We’re custodians of these bells and these bells will see many more Kings and Queens in the future and it’s our duty to ring them on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the new King and everyone else that has rung them in the past as well.
"We’ve been ringing the bells Monday, today (Tuesday), Wednesday and Thursday which is a quarter peal.
"A quarter peal is a much longer performance, of a set length, to a specific composition, and with the same person ringing each bell throughout. On our bells, a quarter peal takes 45 to 50 minutes, so when we attempt one, we start earlier than for normal service ringing. As well as being longer, the performance is also rung to a specific composition.
"We’ll then be ringing for an hour before the funeral as well.”
Campanology (/kæmpəˈnɒlədʒi/ is the scientific and musical study of bells. It encompasses the technology of bells - how they are founded, tuned and rung - as well as the history, methods, and traditions of bellringing as an art.
It is common to collect together a set of tuned bells and treat the whole as one musical instrument. Such collections - such as a Flemish carillon, a Russian zvon, or an English "ring of bells" used for change ringing - have their own practices and challenges; and campanology is likewise the study of perfecting such instruments and composing and performing music for them.
    A bell
In this sense, however, the word campanology is most often used in reference to relatively large bells, often hung in a tower. It is not usually applied to assemblages of smaller bells, such as a glockenspiel, a collection of tubular bells, or an Indonesian gamelan.
There are many forms of bell ringing and a lot of information is available on Google.
    Etymology and definition
Campanology is a hybrid word. The first half is derived from the Late Latin campana, meaning 'bell'; the second half is derived from the Ancient Greek -λογία (-logia) meaning 'the study of'.
A campanologist is one who studies campanology, though it is popularly misused to refer to a bell ringer.

Luca was very kind to invite to the Church and to show us the bell tower and the ringing of the bells.
It was quite cramped in there. We couldn't have fitted anyone else in there.

That's most interesting. Thank you for the excellent video and clear descriptions of what so few realise how these amazing sounds are produced. Back in the '40s and '50s I used to do this in my father's church in Derbyshire. Any chance you could add to this video a description and demonstration of half muffling, please? That gives an incredibly emotional touch to funerals.

@hughoneill9929 Hello Hugh, and thank you 😊.
Where in Derbyshire did you and your father ring the bells?
I will look into half muffling and see what I can do, perhaps another video.
      I will make some enquiries.
      Thanks again Hugh.

Fascinating video, so interesting and Luca was very impressive in his knowledge and presence for a youngster. Have you read the story of the Nine Tailors by Dorothy L Sayer? It put me in mind of that - a bell ringing who-dunnit with Lord Peter Wimsey.
