    One of the best albums ever made. It's a concept album about time travel, so it all makes sense when listening from Prologue to Epilogue in one go.

    Ooh, didn't I promise you! I don’t know where I was without Jeff Lynne's music. It can lift you up, it can make you lose yourself in dreams, it can make you forget time, it can bring you back to youth when you first heard it. I am SO happy I was young enough when all this came out to experience it in the original time ❤️

  • @Cosmo-Kramer

    Marissa, you mentioned you really like the lyrics. Remember, *Time,* is a concept album, and so the lyrics are very important, as it's one grand story, building and building from song to song.
    Here's what's going on in this song. Jeff's character has accidentally time-traveled from 1981 _(when the album came out)_ to the year 2095. His girlfriend is still back in 1981, and he's been desperately trying to figure out a way to return to her in that year. It's a truly bizarre experience, because he's living on Earth in 2095, in the same location where he lived in 1981, but whenever he goes to the places where he and she hung out, she is no where to be found. Understandably so, as she's been dead for decades. Poignant, right? But as part of his efforts to reunite with her, he's been attempting to send love letters to her *_back through time_* to tell her what happened to him, in the hopes she will somehow figure out a way to follow him into the future to the year 2095, and then come look for him at their old familiar places they used to frequent together.
    But how long can he wait for her? The Earth is so overpopulated and polluted in 2095 that many people are moving to the moon, which has been made not just habitable, but turned into a veritable paradise compared the crowded and toxic Earth of that time. But if he moves to the moon, that will end any chance of finding his girlfriend. What if she got one of his love letters, and figures out a way to get to 2095, and waits her whole life for him at their familiar places on Earth?! Quite a heartbreaking dilemma, as you can imagine. So here's what he does.
    He buys a ticket to the moon. He's leaving Earth behind. But he's going to send her one last letter back through time to 1981, and hope and pray she receives it. Not only that she receives it to know he's moved to the moon. But also that she can somehow find a way to time-travel from 1981 to 2095 the same as he did, and _then_ come find him on the moon. This song is basically that final love letter, as can be heard in these passages from the song's lyrics:
    I've got a ticket to the moon
    I'll be leaving here any day soon
    Yeah, I've got a ticket to the moon
    But I'd rather see the sunrise, in your eyes
    Got a ticket to the moon
    I'll be rising high above the earth so soon
    And the tears I cry might turn into the rain
    That gently falls upon your window
    You'll never know
    Ticket to the moon
    Ticket to the moon
    Ticket to the moon
    Fly, fly through a troubled sky
    Up to a new world shining bright, oh oh
    Flying high above
    Soaring madly through the mysteries that come
    Wondering sadly if the ways that led me here
    Could turn around and I would see you there
    Standing there (I would see you there)
    Ticket to the moon
    Flight leaves here today from Satellite 2
    As the minutes go by, what shall I do
    I paid the fare, what more can I say?
    It's just one way

      Hi Cosmo! For one who claims to not like this album so much, you know it quite well! :-)

    • @Cosmo-Kramer
      @Cosmo-Kramer Год назад +2

      @@lhpl Lol...well thanks, but it's mostly the two big singles, "Twilight", and, "Hold On Tight", that have always failed to turn me on. Over the decades, however, some of the lesser known have grown on me, most notably this song, "Here Is The News", and, "Yours Truly, 2095". I certainly recognize Jeff's genius-level songwriting in crafting this concept album, and I will always push back on those who trivialize his lyricism as fluff. It is frequently quite profound, like in this album, and even more so in his earlier concept LP, Eldorado. And as you and I have often discussed, his environmental consciousness shows up periodically in his lyrics dating back to his early ELO days. But even the tracks I really dig on Time don't really feel like ELO songs to me--more like, Jeff Lynne solo songs. As far as I'm concerned, ANWR was the band's peak, there was a small dropoff with OOTB, and then a more pronounced dropoff with Discovery. But Discovery is still damn good. And for the most part, still sounds like ELO. Discovery is the last album I consider to be "real" ELO.
      But heck, there are songs on Secret Messages, Balance of Power, Zoom, Alone In The Universe, and From Out of Nowhere that I really like. Again, though, I consider them to be more like JL solo songs to me, than ELO songs.
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      @@Cosmo-Kramer I'm just teasing, as I'm sure you know. :-)
      After Time, my next two albums were On The Third Day and the original Greatest Hits. Both were so vastly different, both compared to Time and to each other (with Greatest representing the sound you like so many others think of as _the_ ELO sound), that I never made such an association, I just accepted and loved the huge variation.
      Later, after hearing Jeff in the Idle Race and the Move, his solo albums, Travelling Wilburys, etc, I just lump it all in one category. Underneath it all, there is a connecting thread, and to me, that's the spirit of ELO.

    • @Cosmo-Kramer
      @Cosmo-Kramer Год назад

      @@lhpl Yes, no doubt the order by which one was exposed the albums greatly affects their perception of those albums. Also, one's age at those times.
      The same thing happened to me with my 5th favorite band, RUSH. I began listening to them when they began, but then when they made that early-'80s abrupt change in sound--I blame it on the revolutionary new synthesizers of that time, for both ELO and RUSH--their rock 'n roll luster was mostly gone. For ELO, the album with that abrupt change to synths was 1981's, Time; and for RUSH, their album with that abrupt transition to synths was, 1982's, Signals. Both were massive disappointments to me, and my friends, who had grown up with the bands.

  • @lhpl
    @lhpl Год назад +7

    I guess I was the one predicting a "new favorite". Not because I know you - I don't - but because I know Jeff's songs. Time was my entry ticket - one way! - to ELO, and later the Idle Race, the Move and Travelling Wilburys. So over the past 42 years, I've listened to this album hundreds of times, from _prologue_ to _epilogue_ almost every time. Here's a "trick" for you. You don't need to rank songs. Great songs are just that: Great. They may be different, and some may fit better than others, to the mood you happen to be in, but they are incomparable. Infinity + 1 = Infinity.
    The natural song for the next Time is of course meant to be _The Way Life's Meant To Be_ - that's just a fact of life.
    AFTER that, I'd strongly recommend doing _Another Heart Breaks_ and _Rain Is Falling_ in one video, as the first of these two is very short. And it also sets the mood for the other.
    I am getting used to Tyler's outbursts by now, but may I suggest that when an outburst turns into a comment, you pause and/or rewind the song? While you babble about how great what you just heard was, you sometimes miss a small part that is even greater. And I doubt any of you catched the "remember the good old nineteen-eighties" lyric at the start. For me (and I guess for others like me) this has a special meaning after 42 years.
    There are so many "tiny little details" on Time, you can't catch many of them in just one listening. So when you are all done, give Time the time it deserves; take some time to listen to all of Time from beginning to end without pausing. After a few times, you'll love the album far beyond what you do now.
    Concerning the story of this progressive album about a time traveler: I believe that according to Jeff, the ending is open - it is just not known if he returns to his own time or not. (But if the lyrics of a much older song, _Fire On High_ (from Face The Music, 1975) , are taken literally, I fear the answer is clear: Only the music is reversible...

    It's been said so many times already in the comments and I will say it again; the album "Time" is one of the best concept albums ever and "Ticket to the Moon" is a beautiful track. Jeff Lynne really is a musical chameleon whilst retaining the trademark E.L.O. musical layers and transitions. "Time" was one of the musical highlights for me during the 1980s and still after its release in 1981. A great album that was so prophetic and futuristic back then and dare I say it, has stood the test of time. After "Ticket to the Moon" we have "The Way Life Used to Be"....another cracker. Your favourite E.L.O. song is the one that you are listening to at any given time. It is the same for me with Nightwish. Thank you both for another great reaction. Paul 👍😊

    Hi there guys. Really love your reaction videos. So nice to see young people discovering the music of ELO. That being said, I have a big suggestion for you guys to react to. It's ELO's 1974 concept album called Eldorado: A Symphony by Electric Light Orchestra. I am an older fan here of your RUclips channel. I grew up listening to ELO in the 1970's and 1980's. Eldorado is probably their finest album in my eyes and is my favourite album of all time. As mentioned, it's a concept album (see the wiki link below for concept description). All of the songs flow into the next while telling the story of the dreamer so you need to start at the very beginning and start with the opening instrumental track call "Eldorado Overture" and then let it flow right into the first vocal track "Cant get it out of my head" (the albums single) and then onto the other tracks. The album also utilizes a full orchestra and vocal choirs conducted by Louis Clark. Would love it if you got the time at some point to react to this album. You guys won't be disappointed.

      42 years ago I heard Time before diving into the older albums, I don't think that's a big problem. However, some albums (if you ask me, all of them) are constructed as a whole and therefore best heard in track order.
