I personally own a Fatboy and your video 100% aligns with my experience with it as well. Awesome bike, but like most things, there's details you should know for transparency. Nicely done video as always!
The Fatboy is definitely a cool bike but some folks tend to overlook a few things. I thought they should know the full scope of things before they buy.
‘07 fatboy owner here and it’s absolutely amazing how versatile the bike is. It’s big enough for cross country travel and small enough to whip around like a sporty.
I have ridden three FatBoy’s: 103, 110 and 114. Both the 103 & 110 had excessively low cornering clearance; you’ll be scrapping the floorboards on just about every ride. Also the rear suspension on the old frame (pre-2018) is terrible, it claims 2” of travel but it feels even less! The 114 is miles ahead of the old bike but it is a pia to ride fast, the rear tire is ginormous and it is hard to haul ass on because it is flat (think dark side) and it feel like the contact patch is much smaller at lean. The 114 is the better bike and a rear tire upgrade (like Avon Cobra Chome) will have a rounder profile. In general terms - it’s hard to haul ass through the twisties on a FatBoy
I am 66 years old ,just retired ,never rode. Got my ebdorsement thru Harleys 3 day course on that shitty 350 and I am 6foot 7,so you can imagine what that was like,Next day went out and bought 2005 fatboy fuel injected with 16,000 orig miles immaculate condition for 5,700 dollars. I was comfortable on the first day and absolutely love this bike.Prob will get higher handlebars, but I do like the stock ones to. Being 6 foot 7 it is pretty comfortable,but I havnt gone on any real long rides yet.
Yeah, that must have felt weird at your height on a bike that small. Higher bars might help as you may slouch a bit. If you start doing longer rides you may like an engine guard with highway pegs to stretch your legs out.
I had the anniversary model in a light blue metallic . Vance and Hines pipes . Fantastic motorcycle! Got a new Gold Wing in 2007 that was also a fantastic motorcycle! Both bikes carries their weight low for easy maneuverability. Haven't rode in years . I probably will get a Harley and the new aGoldwing DCT . Got the itch to ride . Too much work and retired to enjoy life again . FJB !
I just bought a 04 from my son for cheap, runs amazingly well but needs some TLC. It's in the shop right now getting the 50,000mi service done, upgrading the rear suspension, inspecting and if necessary changing the camshaft tensioner, plus some odds and ends, new grips, LED light kits, and installing the security kit as well. He bought it about a year ago but lost interest in it, I've been riding it around and he finally said he'd sell it to me. I'm sure I'll eventually get a big touring cruiser or hell I may get a Lay-Z boy on wheels but for now I love the hell outta this bike.
@SouthernJaeger over here in UK they are rare.I have had mine over 2 years and apart from seeing them in the HD dealers I have not seen another on the roads.Come to that I did see a V Rod a couple of months ago ,but even seeing that surprised me.
I had a new 1993, the first thing I did was get rid of the stock handlebars, I had the dealer put on straight bars for me. Loved it. I don't know why people say it's hard to ride, the only issue I had with it is the floorboards would scrap the pavement when you leaned into the turns hard.
I purchased a used 2019 Fat Boy 114 a couple years ago with 246 miles on it. I like it a lot and it really fit the bill for what I was looking for. I needed a long distance bike and actually bought a used 2016 Ultra Classic a year prior with 5 miles on it. I absolutely hated it and could write a book on why. I sold it 9 months later and began looking for something else. I considered EVERYTHING and saw the Fat Boy 114. It was at a dealership and the previous owner put about $5k of goodies into it. The bike was $18k OTD so I bought it. The main things I replaced were the pipes (V&H 300 Slip ons), V&H FP4 tuner, seat, LED turns, etc. I took the bike to Sturgis with my buddy in 2023 and it was about 7 days round trip. The bike puts out decent power and the ride is enjoyable. Aside from issues that ALWAYS plague every Harley (odometer fogs, gas gauge shows 3/4 when full, impossible to find neutral, etc..) I really do like the bike and so does my wife. I also ride a 2018 VMax that I take out when I go solo and want to have fun :)
Ya did well .my 1st bike was a 25cc engine in a back wheel of a push bike .That was in 1957.Many bikes later i finally reached my goal ( after 3 diff Harleys ) I have a beautiful customised FLSTF .At the grand old age of 82.So u did well for a first ( 700 lbs weight ) Bike.
Yep... had the same exact issue with the factory Michelin Scorchers. What a crappy tire. The front tire completely cupped on one side at only 6k miles. Put on the Metzler Cruisetechs and they have been phenomenal.
i got a 2022 and i love it. but you definitely need to have the money to upgrade. i spent about 1600 right after the break in for exhaust air cleaner and tuner. then another 600 for mustang front and rear seats, not to mention over 300 for a sissy bar and pad. then i spent 275 for the cruise control that i still need to install and then take to the dealer and have them turn on if i don’t get lucky and have it already work like i’ve heard some people have had happen. if i would have went with the fp3 tuner instead of the dynojet. the fp3 has a function to turn on the cruise control.
Yep, you gotta have the cash. I did a video a couple of years back on the total cost I spent on my 2021 Fatboy with add ons. I can’t remember off hand how much the total was, but it was a lot.
I just got a 2023 Fat Boy and love it the first thing I noticed is they come with cruise control now so that’s one thing off my list anyway LOL definitely had to get V+H slip on’s though those stock pipes are too quiet for my taste Lol
I bought a new 2023 Fat Boy - love the 114ci, really pulls. Good point on the seat, really sucks, replaced it with the Harley seat, like a new ride now. I don't relish changing the tires $$$ when the time comes, as you mentioned. I have an 09 Ultra with the 96ci, still going strong at 85,000km. I always loved the Fatboy. I can’t say that I wouldn’t get another if they use the 117 and have a model in white. But it does hurt the wallet when those tires have to be changed. Hopefully your Ultra does another 85,000. Thanks for the view 👍
Great reel. The only shortcoming with mine was the front tire wear, which was more pronounced on the right side. If the rider is serious about low-speed, take a skilled rider course; the FB will respond to inputs, and get you maneuvered within an 18' u-turn box.
My first bike ever is a 14 Fatboy Lo. I knew what I wanted and knew that I'd outgrow a sportster by the end of summer, and I'd be pissed at myself for getting one. I'm soooo happy I picked the bike I wanted. Don't let people tell you to get a sportster first. Motorcycles are made so that everyone can ride them!

Motorcycles are not for everyone. With experience perhaps. But not just anyone can hop on any motorcycle and ride it with no problem. If you think that a Fatboy is no problem for anyone then please post some videos of you letting anybody and everybody hopping on your bike and taking it for a spin. I suggest starting at a high school or university. I’m sure you’ll find some inexperienced riders willing to take your bike for a ride.
Love the Fat Boy but hate the softail design. Makes a simple job like pulling the starter or primary a nightmare when you remove everything under the seat to gain access. Still rides like a dream tho
I'm a 2008 FLSTF owner, your review was quite good.! Years ago Motorcycle Mojo magazine said it was only good for "going for coffee or cruising". Still pissed they said that!
I ride a 92 Fatboy. It rides and goes down the road just fine. I have a EV27 cam and S&S carb. Other than that it's stock. I did put a Heritage spoke wheel on the front and a set of aftermarket hard bags on the back and a bigger gas tank. It has changed some what just like me ver the years lol. I will not part with my bike for as long as I live.
I just modified my custom 2009, has a fat boy front with a roadking tire. Saddle issue is solved, Customs come with wide and comfy seats. i cant wait to se how it rides now.
My 97 evo didn’t leak oil, the primary did, had to fix the clutch basket, (ate the snap-ring wrecked the bearing and fragged the inner primary case with the chain, had it welded) I put over 70,000 miles on it.
This is very well done. Thanks for not ruining it with juvenile computer game music. (Otherwise I wouldn't watch.). Rocker box cover leaks are related to heat from low air flow mostly on rear. Air cool engine.
Thanks for the info!! Factory tires suck, and not just from Harley. I like the 240's look a lot. Both my bikes have 180 rears and do well. I live 10 miles from Rocky Mountain ATV, and get a great deal on tires from them. They will mount them for you too, (off the bike). If I get real serious about getting a Fatboy, I'll know where to come first. Thanks!
Hi! The custom workshop told that the fatboy's rear wheel is displaced by 8.5 millimeters relative to the motorcycle, and the front wheel by 3.5 millimeters. This is the likely cause of uneven wheel wear.
Good day Saint. I have an 18 Fatboy 115th anniversary edition that I’m looking at selling in the spring. I’m in Alberta. There were none of these in Sask. when new and 2 in Alberta.
I bought a 2003 Fat Boy Anniversary which had only 840 miles on it. I bought it in 2023. I am not a mechanic. At what milage should I be worried about that tensioner that you mentioned. The bike looks more like a show bike and the previous owner really did a nice job with any non functional parts he changed. It has a carburetor. I have driven it only another 400 miles and it seems to go along really well. I don't see any oil leaking from the top of the crankcase. I leave a trickle charge on it inside my unheated NH garage.
A 2003 with that low of mileage sounds like a pretty good deal. The tensioner usually went bad at higher mileage. Like around 20,000 miles but that’s more of an average. A bike like yours with hardly any miles should be fine for awhile. But it never hurts to change them earlier.
@@canadiansa1nt309 Thank you! I bought the bike site unseen other than dealer pictures. When I saw it, it was even better. I paid top dollar ($9800) but it was in my hometown and at a dealer who said if I didn't want to keep it he would take it back after 30 days with holding $1000. That seemed fair. I have not made any changes however I would like to buy a really nice running light kit for it. I want something that is very functional. I think amber look great, even as a DRL. But I want a bright light for those dark roads. I think 45 mph is plenty fast where there are lots of deer springing out from the side. And in NH we have lots of moose just standing out in the middle of the roads. I would feel so bad if I hit one of those poor dumb bastards. I hate distracted drivers. Here in Florida everyone is on the phone. Accidents everyday. Usually here they are hit and run. No fun here on a motorcycle.
I don’t know if you sub to the channel krusei originals, but he recently did a two part video(s) about the original 1990 Fat boy and it’s 80 year old owner. I really enjoyed the videos, think you will as well. Neat old guy and the bike is his baby.
The tires can't be as bad as the Dunlop tires I ran on a Honda sport bike. The rear tire never lasted more than 2,500 miles and I wasn't doing burn outs, just accelerating hard.

I totally agree about the Michellin Schorchers. Mine were HORRIBLE on my Iron. I replaced them with MIcheliin Commander III's. MUCH better tires. And YES. the Harley seats are horrible as well. Pieces of shit actually. I went with the saddleman.
The whole concept of the fatboy was having a rear and front rim and tire of the same size, Fat Tire in Front and Back. If you’re wearing the tires unevenly see a shop technician, you’re not set up on the lean axis, center of gravity. This man is correct about Ape Hangers, Good for your back and posture, plus fun !
I actually had two different dealers look at the tire wear. Both said the same thing, that it’s apparently “normal” wear. Definitely agreed with the apes 👍
Yup. @ 4:09 , I agree..... It's due to road Camber .( The center-line to road-edge slope, for water run-off ). My Bridgestones ended up like that after about 8,000 km;s and I replaced them with Shinko ( Yokohama's rebranding of their MC division rubber ). good so far at about 20,000 km;s of abuse, lol.
My factory Michelin Scorchers only lasted 3,500 miles. I replaced them with Shinko's and 4,800 miles later, they still look like brand new. I think the Shinko's handle better than the Scorchers, especially through turns.
On my 4th Harley since 1989 once i changed the oil i never had to top up.untill 12 months later i change oul again regardless of miles i did .in fact my 1998 wide glide factory battery lasted 15 years.
I bought a 2008 Fatboy to compliment my V Rod, kept it for 2 years, for a 1600cc engine it was gutless and handled like a pickup truck, still own the V Rod which is not gutless.....😎
I bought a 2023 fatboy last summer. It’s a great bike but the only query I have is what’s the trick of turning the bike into corners.? I tend to slow right down and do my turns, is there any other tips you can share with me. Thanks
You gotta dip into the lean, if turning left you wanna turn right first then quickly left, that tightens the turn radius and also use one of your knees to push against the bike into turns
Bought a pre-owned 2013 Fat Boy Lo earlier this month. I've been riding on the street for more than 30 years, and you are correct, I would not recommend this bike for a new rider.

I’m not sure that you’re too tall but you may feel a little scrunched up. You could look at getting a seat that sits you back a little farther if you’re not looking at changing the bars. Also, highway pegs on an engine guard would also help to stretch your legs out.
I'm 6' 3" tall and I'm kind of okay with it, but I'm probably going to build a custom bike with a stretched frame in about a year. The handlebars are actually about perfect and I'm comfortable with them. My biggest issue is the brake lever. They make an extended version but I think the longest I've found was a 1 1/2" extension and I think I'd need 2" to 2 1/2" to be a perfect fit for my legs (34" inseam). The shift lever is slightly more comfortable but an extended version of that would help me as well. I've been threatening to sell the bike pretty much since I bought it, but 8,300 miles later, can't bring myself to get rid of it. If you have the money, I'd build a custom, but you'll be okay on the stock Fatboy, albeit barely.
@@John-ob7dh I bought it now and it was one of best decisions I jave ever made. With all other bikes I owned before, I had back pain after riding for more than 3 hrs because I was to tall for the bike. With the dat boy I can ride for 10 hrs a day without feeling any pain.
@janlaser9995 That's good ,he had his from new and never had a prob riding it ,it's just his buddies ( and me ) told him he looked too tall for it when we were riding behind him. He prob got fed up with the comments.
I have never had my tires wear unevenly on this bike 🤷♂️ but the again my riding style is all over the place. Maybe if I rode with my torso too straight up and down ? I can see that happening ? But I don’t. I move around the seat to apply pressure in the socket according to necessity. And that in turn cause me to use up most of the tire, and this wears it down a bit more evenly ? Don’t know just throwing it out there 🤷♂️

I’ve had the bike for two years exactly what I be able to get these covers because I seen your description. I looked them up, but I don’t know if it’s because you live out there and I live over here. Thank you. It could be that the part numbers are different in different places. The best thing I could tell you is to talk to a Harley dealership and ask for the chrome electrical covers for a 2024 Breakout. They should fit on your 2022 Fatboy. The parts department at the dealership should be able to look up the part numbers for you.

I want a bike that I can ride comfortably and safely. This bike sounds like it can be that, but I have to make it so. When Harley decides to build one I will buy it
I’m not sure where to start. I suppose it would depend on the mileage. The engine is a 80 inch evo which is very reliable, but I’ve never owned one that didn’t leak from the rocker box covers. It’s an easy fix with new gaskets though. You may want to look at the primary chain tensioner shoe if you get one with higher mileage. The seat won’t be too comfortable for longer rides, and the suspension is not the greatest either. Those were the issues I had with the 1995 model I had. Having said all that, it would be a very nice bike to have. It’s just not made for long ride comfort.
I have a 2002 twin cam FB 1450ccc Very close in looks to the original T2 model. 2002 was a good year for the twin cams.Mine is carburetor, and is solid crank & and reliable Timken bearings ( later ones were pressed crank .) And for some crazy reason they changed from Timken bearings. Mine has the T2 solid wheels ,but the head light has the freight train conversion . I beleive they did away with the dummy cap on the tank of the new FB and put on floating disc brakes that can be noisy.
I think you would be alright. Fatboys are pretty good for shorter riders as they’re lower to the ground. You could also look for a Fatboy Lo. There should be plenty out there.
I'm 5'-7" 32" inseam I have an 05 FatBoy 88 Twin Cam. I run Avon Cobra tires. Rides great and I have done long trips on...longest was 1,700 miles no problem
I have a 2024 Fatboy and my only gripe is the seat , 20 minutes in and you have to get off , i have changed the seat to the sundowner which is better but i still think there is a seat for tall riders some where that doesn’t cost a house mortgage .
I agree about the seat for sure. I have a 2024 as well. I switched out the seat with a stock 2024 Breakout seat. It sits you a little lower and further back, but it is much more comfortable.
In fact the motor comany came up with that name due to the atom bombs fatman and littleboy hence the name fatboy, the very first model even came out with the same color scheme as the bombs and the rocker boxes had those very same orange stripes the bombs had. Although all models have come out off the factory with solid rims, the first fatboys such as the evo's or some of the earlier twin cams did not came with real "fat" tires, in fact those fatboys used to have 130mm front and rear tires on 16' rims. As time went by, fatboys became larger not just tire size wise but frame and motor wise as well, so the robust configuration of this iconic Harley Davidson helped the term stick and became known for it. P.S. Personally I don't know anybody who has asked if the fatboy is a good beginner motorcycle, but it's like asking if you can learn to shoot with an AR-15 assault rifle, it just doesn't make any sense at all.
@@canadiansa1nt309the company denied it ,but as said about the ww2 bomber colour silver scheme and the solid wheels like the bomber ,I think they can deny it all they like but I am not so sure . It is defo not a beginners bike.i have had 2 sportsters and a evo wide glide ,and this bike is heavy .I went up fro 485 lbs sportster to 580 lbs wide glide to my 700 lbs Fat Boy .No prob when on the move ,and mine having the smaller tyres is good on corners ,BUT if moving the bike around slow you have to be careful as if your feet slip ( say on gravel ) and the bike starts to go over ,don't even try to stop it as you won't. I fitted Mustache engine guards on mine the day after I bought it . And don't put the front brake on when in a tight turn or over you go . I know because I did lol. But the crash bars saved the paint and the chrome

Of course they would deny the truth these days, it is not exactly a good way to name your bike after a devices that annihilated thousands of civilians... War or no, victory or no, that is still always an awful tragedy. That said, I still love Fatboy. My favourite bike ever made.

Hi! Great vid! Just wanna ask if you had a chance to compare 114 Fat Boy and Breakout 117 ? I’ll do test ride of Breakout soon, but probably you know something that might help in this decision. I am 6’4, 210lbs, and had a vrod previously. I just took out a Breakout a few days ago. There should be a review video on it coming out Saturday. I’ll also be doing the Fatboy comparison in the next few weeks. I wouldn’t be too concerned with the cooling on the 2018 and later models. They come with oil coolers now which reduces the heat from the previous models.
@@canadiansa1nt309 thanks for the response, appreciate it. I had a 20mins tests for both yesterday afternoon and understood that the Fat Boy is not the best choice for me personally. Unfortunately, it is less comfortable for me in terms of fit and position of the arms (they are bent), while on Breakout the arms are almost straight, slightly bent. Even if I change the saddle and stem...In general, for my purposes (town trips less than 100 miles) I realized that Breakout is my choice. The only thing that seemed inconvenient were the footrests. But it can be changed, that’s the way out. However, I am definitely gonna watch your video, I will be interested in comparing them and hearing your opinion on this matter. But I am pretty sure that the Breakout is gonna be soon in my garage. Cheers,
I have one question. Is it possible to adjust the front stock suspension? I’m fine with the rear but I find the front suspension too stiff/hard. I have a 2022 Fatboy. Thx 🙏🏼

I think they’ll move the engine up to a 117 in the next year or two. Also, 2025 is the Fatboy’s 35th anniversary so I wouldn’t be surprised to see an special model next year.

Well, I would always recommend something with a lower displacement like a Sportster for a newer rider, however, it’s not for everyone. A Street Bob or a Softail Standard would be the next step up. The Softail has a 107 engine, and the Street Bob has the 114. Both could work with forward controls. Another thing you could do is put on an engine guard with highway pegs. That would allow you to stretch out a little more. A good thing is that they both come with mini apes stock. For a guy your size that may feel more comfortable instead of the lower bars on other models. Styling wise, I find the Street Bob much better looking than the Softail Standard.
for what it's worth, I started riding in 2022 on a brand new 2022 Fatboy. However, I did go through the MFS course and took additional instructions specifically low-speed maneuvers (clutch and Throttle control in the sweet spot called the friction zone). Practiced doing figure eights within a 20'-30' box.. I have never dropped the bike or come close to it...and now have 10k miles under my belt. It has nothing to do with the size of the bike, and everything to do with confidence. Confidence comes with training and practice..you can do it..check out the different "low-Speed videos online, I watched about 80 hours worth. God-Speed

I really not surprised because I noticed while sitting on a new 2021 model fatboy and standing it strait up it would fall left each time..i didn't like that..the have that power train pushed to the right of the frame as far as posible, but I still find that clutch pack sticking out so far a nuance..so I now have two late model touring harleys
@@canadiansa1nt309 mine is a 2018, 107. 2 yrs ago I fitted Bridgestones at about %60 of the dealer price for Scorchers. A T32 rear fits the front. It's a dual compound which gives good grip but still wears on the edges like the originals did. I'm guessing that's due to the massive rear tyre and the heavy camber we have on our roads. Next time I might try Metzlers. Cheers from Aussie.
My 1st bike was ,and I still own is a Honda Shadow 1100. At with any bigger HP bike a responsible person has to remember the bike will kill you if you don't respect the power it has .
@@canadiansa1nt309 It does take some getting used to. I hadn't owned a bike for 30 years when I bought my 2020 Fatboy and those wide tires don't want to turn very well. There were curves on a 65 MPH highway that at first, I'd slow down to 55 or 60 to go through. After I rode the bike a few thousand miles, I'll take those same turns at 100 MPH or better.
@@canadiansa1nt309years ago I had my 883 upgraded with wiseco pistons to 1200cc. ( this was a 1988 4 speed 883) I took it on the M11 up to 100mph . It was fast . BUT no way did I do it again . It was damn uncomfortable at that speed .

The 114 is miles ahead of the old bike but it is a pia to ride fast, the rear tire is ginormous and it is hard to haul ass on because it is flat (think dark side) and it feel like the contact patch is much smaller at lean. The 114 is the better bike and a rear tire upgrade (like Avon Cobra Chome) will have a rounder profile. In general terms - it’s hard to haul ass through the twisties on a FatBoy
I am 66 years old ,just retired ,never rode. Got my ebdorsement thru Harleys 3 day course on that shitty 350 and I am 6foot 7,so you can imagine what that was like,Next day went out and bought 2005 fatboy fuel injected with 16,000 orig miles immaculate condition for 5,700 dollars. I was comfortable on the first day and absolutely love this bike.Prob will get higher handlebars, but I do like the stock ones to. Being 6 foot 7 it is pretty comfortable,but I havnt gone on any real long rides yet.
Yeah, that must have felt weird at your height on a bike that small.
Higher bars might help as you may slouch a bit. If you start doing longer rides you may like an engine guard with highway pegs to stretch your legs out.
I had the anniversary model in a light blue metallic . Vance and Hines pipes . Fantastic motorcycle! Got a new Gold Wing in 2007 that was also a fantastic motorcycle! Both bikes carries their weight low for easy maneuverability. Haven't rode in years . I probably will get a Harley and the new aGoldwing DCT . Got the itch to ride . Too much work and retired to enjoy life again . FJB !
I just bought a 04 from my son for cheap, runs amazingly well but needs some TLC. It's in the shop right now getting the 50,000mi service done, upgrading the rear suspension, inspecting and if necessary changing the camshaft tensioner, plus some odds and ends, new grips, LED light kits, and installing the security kit as well. He bought it about a year ago but lost interest in it, I've been riding it around and he finally said he'd sell it to me. I'm sure I'll eventually get a big touring cruiser or hell I may get a Lay-Z boy on wheels but for now I love the hell outta this bike.
Those earlier twin cams are really nice bikes. Sounds like it’s getting the treatment it deserves. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it for years to come.

@SouthernJaeger over here in UK they are rare.I have had mine over 2 years and apart from seeing them in the HD dealers I have not seen another on the roads.Come to that I did see a V Rod a couple of months ago ,but even seeing that surprised me.
I had a new 1993, the first thing I did was get rid of the stock handlebars, I had the dealer put on straight bars for me. Loved it. I don't know why people say it's hard to ride, the only issue I had with it is the floorboards would scrap the pavement when you leaned into the turns hard.

I purchased a used 2019 Fat Boy 114 a couple years ago with 246 miles on it. I like it a lot and it really fit the bill for what I was looking for. I needed a long distance bike and actually bought a used 2016 Ultra Classic a year prior with 5 miles on it. I absolutely hated it and could write a book on why. I sold it 9 months later and began looking for something else. I considered EVERYTHING and saw the Fat Boy 114. It was at a dealership and the previous owner put about $5k of goodies into it. The bike was $18k OTD so I bought it. The main things I replaced were the pipes (V&H 300 Slip ons), V&H FP4 tuner, seat, LED turns, etc. I took the bike to Sturgis with my buddy in 2023 and it was about 7 days round trip. The bike puts out decent power and the ride is enjoyable. Aside from issues that ALWAYS plague every Harley (odometer fogs, gas gauge shows 3/4 when full, impossible to find neutral, etc..) I really do like the bike and so does my wife. I also ride a 2018 VMax that I take out when I go solo and want to have fun :)
Sounds like a good deal. Replacing the pipes and seat, as well as getting decent tune would definitely do the trick.

Ya did well .my 1st bike was a 25cc engine in a back wheel of a push bike .That was in 1957.Many bikes later i finally reached my goal ( after 3 diff Harleys ) I have a beautiful customised FLSTF .At the grand old age of 82.So u did well for a first ( 700 lbs weight ) Bike.

Yep... had the same exact issue with the factory Michelin Scorchers. What a crappy tire. The front tire completely cupped on one side at only 6k miles. Put on the Metzler Cruisetechs and they have been phenomenal.

i got a 2022 and i love it. but you definitely need to have the money to upgrade. i spent about 1600 right after the break in for exhaust air cleaner and tuner. then another 600 for mustang front and rear seats, not to mention over 300 for a sissy bar and pad. then i spent 275 for the cruise control that i still need to install and then take to the dealer and have them turn on if i don’t get lucky and have it already work like i’ve heard some people have had happen. if i would have went with the fp3 tuner instead of the dynojet. the fp3 has a function to turn on the cruise control.
Yep, you gotta have the cash. I did a video a couple of years back on the total cost I spent on my 2021 Fatboy with add ons. I can’t remember off hand how much the total was, but it was a lot.
I just got a 2023 Fat Boy and love it the first thing I noticed is they come with cruise control now so that’s one thing off my list anyway LOL definitely had to get V+H slip on’s though those stock pipes are too quiet for my taste Lol
I bought a new 2023 Fat Boy - love the 114ci, really pulls. Good point on the seat, really sucks, replaced it with the Harley seat, like a new ride now. I don't relish changing the tires $$$ when the time comes, as you mentioned. I have an 09 Ultra with the 96ci, still going strong at 85,000km. I always loved the Fatboy. I can’t say that I wouldn’t get another if they use the 117 and have a model in white. But it does hurt the wallet when those tires have to be changed. Hopefully your Ultra does another 85,000. Thanks for the view 👍
I have a 2012 stage II Fatboy. Love it. Turned it into a fatglide. Batwing, saddlebags etc.

Great reel. The only shortcoming with mine was the front tire wear, which was more pronounced on the right side. If the rider is serious about low-speed, take a skilled rider course; the FB will respond to inputs, and get you maneuvered within an 18' u-turn box.

My first bike ever is a 14 Fatboy Lo. I knew what I wanted and knew that I'd outgrow a sportster by the end of summer, and I'd be pissed at myself for getting one. I'm soooo happy I picked the bike I wanted. Don't let people tell you to get a sportster first. Motorcycles are made so that everyone can ride them!
Most outgrow their first bike pretty quick. I think I got my first Fatboy after two seasons. If you think you can handle it, go for it.

please post some videos of you letting anybody and everybody hopping on your bike and taking it for a spin. I suggest starting at a high school or university. I’m sure you’ll find some inexperienced riders willing to take your bike for a ride.
Love the Fat Boy but hate the softail design. Makes a simple job like pulling the starter or primary a nightmare when you remove everything under the seat to gain access. Still rides like a dream tho

I ride a 92 Fatboy. It rides and goes down the road just fine. I have a EV27 cam and S&S carb. Other than that it's stock. I did put a Heritage spoke wheel on the front and a set of aftermarket hard bags on the back and a bigger gas tank. It has changed some what just like me ver the years lol. I will not part with my bike for as long as I live.
Nothing like an evo Fatboy.
in 2018, on all soft tails, the Chassy, suspension, and breaks all got a much needed upgrade.

I just modified my custom 2009, has a fat boy front with a roadking tire. Saddle issue is solved, Customs come with wide and comfy seats. i cant wait to se how it rides now.

My 97 evo didn’t leak oil, the primary did, had to fix the clutch basket, (ate the snap-ring wrecked the bearing and fragged the inner primary case with the chain, had it welded) I put over 70,000 miles on it.
My rocker boxes and primary seeped some oil on my ‘95. That was about it for leakage. It didn’t even have as many miles as yours

Thanks for the info!! Factory tires suck, and not just from Harley. I like the 240's look a lot. Both my bikes have 180 rears and do well. I live 10 miles from Rocky Mountain ATV, and get a great deal on tires from them. They will mount them for you too, (off the bike). If I get real serious about getting a Fatboy, I'll know where to come first. Thanks!
The tires are definitely not the best, but they do look very badass. It’s a good idea to have good tire place as these are usually not cheap.

Hi! The custom workshop told that the fatboy's rear wheel is displaced by 8.5 millimeters relative to the motorcycle, and the front wheel by 3.5 millimeters. This is the likely cause of uneven wheel wear.

I bought a 2003 Fat Boy Anniversary which had only 840 miles on it. I bought it in 2023. I am not a mechanic. At what milage should I be worried about that tensioner that you mentioned. The bike looks more like a show bike and the previous owner really did a nice job with any non functional parts he changed. It has a carburetor. I have driven it only another 400 miles and it seems to go along really well. I don't see any oil leaking from the top of the crankcase. I leave a trickle charge on it inside my unheated NH garage.
A 2003 with that low of mileage sounds like a pretty good deal. The tensioner usually went bad at higher mileage. Like around 20,000 miles but that’s more of an average. A bike like yours with hardly any miles should be fine for awhile. But it never hurts to change them earlier.

I paid top dollar ($9800) but it was in my hometown and at a dealer who said if I didn't want to keep it he would take it back after 30 days with holding $1000. That seemed fair. I have not made any changes however I would like to buy a really nice running light kit for it. I want something that is very functional. I think amber look great, even as a DRL. But I want a bright light for those dark roads. I think 45 mph is plenty fast where there are lots of deer springing out from the side. And in NH we have lots of moose just standing out in the middle of the roads. I would feel so bad if I hit one of those poor dumb bastards. I hate distracted drivers. Here in Florida everyone is on the phone. Accidents everyday. Usually here they are hit and run. No fun here on a motorcycle.

Been a dyna rider for a decade. Recently switched to a fat boy, totally different ride but super fun still and way more comfortable for longer rides
I’ve always found the Fatboy to be a better ride than the dynas.
The tires can't be as bad as the Dunlop tires I ran on a Honda sport bike. The rear tire never lasted more than 2,500 miles and I wasn't doing burn outs, just accelerating hard.

If I was going to buy a new seat I would probably look at Lepara or Saddleman. Corbin isn’t bad either.

I totally agree about the Michellin Schorchers. Mine were HORRIBLE on my Iron. I replaced them with MIcheliin Commander III's. MUCH better tires. And YES. the Harley seats are horrible as well. Pieces of shit actually. I went with the saddleman.
I’ve heard of a lot of folks going with Commanders or Cruisetecs. A saddleman definitely gets the nod over those stock seats.
The whole concept of the fatboy was having a rear and front rim and tire of the same size, Fat Tire in Front and Back.
If you’re wearing the tires unevenly see a shop technician, you’re not set up on the lean axis, center of gravity.

Yup. @ 4:09 , I agree..... It's due to road Camber .( The center-line to road-edge slope, for water run-off ). My Bridgestones ended up like that after about 8,000 km;s and I replaced them with Shinko ( Yokohama's rebranding of their MC division rubber ). good so far at about 20,000 km;s of abuse, lol.
Harley would be wise to use a better tire. But then they couldn’t charge for frequent changes I suppose.
My factory Michelin Scorchers only lasted 3,500 miles. I replaced them with Shinko's and 4,800 miles later, they still look like brand new. I think the Shinko's handle better than the Scorchers, especially through turns.

8k on a Metzler cruzetech..
8500 so far on my Elites and prob can get 1 more k out of it...

On my 4th Harley since 1989 once i changed the oil i never had to top up.untill 12 months later i change oul again regardless of miles i did .in fact my 1998 wide glide factory battery lasted 15 years.
I got a 21 fatboy solid bike I also have my fathers 63 pan head but I really want a 24 road glide
Those are a couple of nice bikes. The Road Glide doesn’t look too bad this year after they revamped it.
I bought a 2008 Fatboy to compliment my V Rod, kept it for 2 years, for a 1600cc engine it was gutless and handled like a pickup truck, still own the V Rod which is not gutless.....😎

I have a 2002 Fat Boy, and the only complaint is that I have to get the stupid cam chain tensioner fixed. It's way too heavy for a first bike.
I had a 2002 as well. It’s definitely an annoyance to change out the tensioner. Also, I tend to agree that the weight is not great for a beginner.
I don't want to do the job myself, but the local place here wants $2,200.00, so i have no choice. What a joke.

I bought a 2023 fatboy last summer. It’s a great bike but the only query I have is what’s the trick of turning the bike into corners.? I tend to slow right down and do my turns, is there any other tips you can share with me. Thanks
Other than slowing down a little I would just take the turn a little wider than usual.
You gotta dip into the lean, if turning left you wanna turn right first then quickly left, that tightens the turn radius and also use one of your knees to push against the bike into turns
Also very important really look where you want to turn .Move your head and look.
Bought a pre-owned 2013 Fat Boy Lo earlier this month. I've been riding on the street for more than 30 years, and you are correct, I would not recommend this bike for a new rider.

I’m not sure that you’re too tall but you may feel a little scrunched up. You could look at getting a seat that sits you back a little farther if you’re not looking at changing the bars. Also, highway pegs on an engine guard would also help to stretch your legs out.
I'm 6' 3" tall and I'm kind of okay with it, but I'm probably going to build a custom bike with a stretched frame in about a year. The handlebars are actually about perfect and I'm comfortable with them. My biggest issue is the brake lever. They make an extended version but I think the longest I've found was a 1 1/2" extension and I think I'd need 2" to 2 1/2" to be a perfect fit for my legs (34" inseam). The shift lever is slightly more comfortable but an extended version of that would help me as well. I've been threatening to sell the bike pretty much since I bought it, but 8,300 miles later, can't bring myself to get rid of it. If you have the money, I'd build a custom, but you'll be okay on the stock Fatboy, albeit barely.
My buddy sold his FB because at 6.5 he defo looked a bit strange ,especially from the rear when I was riding behind him.
@@John-ob7dh I bought it now and it was one of best decisions I jave ever made. With all other bikes I owned before, I had back pain after riding for more than 3 hrs because I was to tall for the bike.
With the dat boy I can ride for 10 hrs a day without feeling any pain.

Some have a harder time than others.
I have never had my tires wear unevenly on this bike 🤷♂️ but the again my riding style is all over the place. Maybe if I rode with my torso too straight up and down ? I can see that happening ? But I don’t. I move around the seat to apply pressure in the socket according to necessity. And that in turn cause me to use up most of the tire, and this wears it down a bit more evenly ? Don’t know just throwing it out there 🤷♂️

Nothing wrong with a Street Bob other than I’m not a big fan of mid controls and it has a smaller gas tank. Other than that it seems pretty good.

I’ve had the bike for two years exactly what I be able to get these covers because I seen your description. I looked them up, but I don’t know if it’s because you live out there and I live over here. Thank you. It could be that the part numbers are different in different places. The best thing I could tell you is to talk to a Harley dealership and ask for the chrome electrical covers for a 2024 Breakout. They should fit on your 2022 Fatboy. The parts department at the dealership should be able to look up the part numbers for you.
I have the 110 S and Love the older shape then the 2020 ANV but in Australia the second hand price is Insane High.

I wanna buy a 91 fatboy because terminator 2: judgment day is my favorite movie ever. What do I need to know/be prepared for?
I’m not sure where to start. I suppose it would depend on the mileage. The engine is a 80 inch evo which is very reliable, but I’ve never owned one that didn’t leak from the rocker box covers. It’s an easy fix with new gaskets though. You may want to look at the primary chain tensioner shoe if you get one with higher mileage. The seat won’t be too comfortable for longer rides, and the suspension is not the greatest either. Those were the issues I had with the 1995 model I had. Having said all that, it would be a very nice bike to have. It’s just not made for long ride comfort.

Very close in looks to the original T2 model.
2002 was a good year for the twin cams.Mine is carburetor, and is solid crank & and reliable Timken bearings ( later ones were pressed crank .)
And for some crazy reason they changed from Timken bearings.
Mine has the T2 solid wheels ,but the head light has the freight train conversion .
I beleive they did away with the dummy cap on the tank of the new FB and put on floating disc brakes that can be noisy.

I have 2005 fuel injected fatboy and I get 40 mpg and I drive mostly city not much highway.

I think you would be alright. Fatboys are pretty good for shorter riders as they’re lower to the ground. You could also look for a Fatboy Lo. There should be plenty out there.

Yes. I'm same size and put 10k a yr on mine. 2017 Fatboy S. The S and Lo are great for shorter inseams.
29.5 inch inside leg is fine on my Fat Boy
I'm 5'-7" 32" inseam I have an 05 FatBoy 88 Twin Cam. I run Avon Cobra tires. Rides great and I have done long trips on...longest was 1,700 miles no problem
I have a 2024 Fatboy and my only gripe is the seat , 20 minutes in and you have to get off , i have changed the seat to the sundowner which is better but i still think there is a seat for tall riders some where that doesn’t cost a house mortgage .
I agree about the seat for sure. I have a 2024 as well. I switched out the seat with a stock 2024 Breakout seat. It sits you a little lower and further back, but it is much more comfortable.
I don't see the Fatboy as being all that heavy. It's really more of a medium weight. It's far lighter than many other bikes.
It is definitely middle of the road weight wise when looking at the heft of the touring models.
@ I rode a Honda Valkyrie for a while, which was a stripped Goldwing. It was substantially heavier than my Fatboy.
In fact the motor comany came up with that name due to the atom bombs fatman and littleboy hence the name fatboy, the very first model even came out with the same color scheme as the bombs and the rocker boxes had those very same orange stripes the bombs had. Although all models have come out off the factory with solid rims, the first fatboys such as the evo's or some of the earlier twin cams did not came with real "fat" tires, in fact those fatboys used to have 130mm front and rear tires on 16' rims.
As time went by, fatboys became larger not just tire size wise but frame and motor wise as well, so the robust configuration of this iconic Harley Davidson helped the term stick and became known for it.
P.S. Personally I don't know anybody who has asked if the fatboy is a good beginner motorcycle, but it's like asking if you can learn to shoot with an AR-15 assault rifle, it just doesn't make any sense at all.

It is defo not a beginners bike.i have had 2 sportsters and a evo wide glide ,and this bike is heavy .I went up fro 485 lbs sportster to 580 lbs wide glide to my 700 lbs Fat Boy .No prob when on the move ,and mine having the smaller tyres is good on corners ,BUT if moving the bike around slow you have to be careful as if your feet slip ( say on gravel ) and the bike starts to go over ,don't even try to stop it as you won't. I fitted Mustache engine guards on mine the day after I bought it .
And don't put the front brake on when in a tight turn or over you go .
I know because I did lol.
But the crash bars saved the paint and the chrome
@@John-ob7dh Their counter argument of "where the fatboy name really came from" is weak at best too. Of course they would deny the truth these days, it is not exactly a good way to name your bike after a devices that annihilated thousands of civilians... War or no, victory or no, that is still always an awful tragedy.
That said, I still love Fatboy. My favourite bike ever made.

After the murderous toll on American lives taking the jap held ww2 islands ,I think the American public would not accept any more like that.

I’ll do test ride of Breakout soon, but probably you know something that might help in this decision. I am 6’4, 210lbs, and had a vrod previously. I am worrying in particular about air cooling system, since couple of my friends complained about this issue as a big time…

I just took out a Breakout a few days ago. There should be a review video on it coming out Saturday. I’ll also be doing the Fatboy comparison in the next few weeks. I wouldn’t be too concerned with the cooling on the 2018 and later models. They come with oil coolers now which reduces the heat from the previous models.

I had a 20mins tests for both yesterday afternoon and understood that the Fat Boy is not the best choice for me personally. Unfortunately, it is less comfortable for me in terms of fit and position of the arms (they are bent), while on Breakout the arms are almost straight, slightly bent. Even if I change the saddle and stem...In general, for my purposes (town trips less than 100 miles) I realized that Breakout is my choice.
The only thing that seemed inconvenient were the footrests. But it can be changed, that’s the way out. However, I am definitely gonna watch your video, I will be interested in comparing them and hearing your opinion on this matter. But I am pretty sure that the Breakout is gonna be soon in my garage.

I have one question. Is it possible to adjust the front stock suspension? I’m fine with the rear but I find the front suspension too stiff/hard. I have a 2022 Fatboy. Thx 🙏🏼
I do not believe you can. Your best bet is to get something aftermarket. And I agree that the front suspension is pretty stiff.

Not bad. The 103 twin cams give off a lot of heat. But other than that I had no issue.
What model seat is the most comfortable for 2 riders?
Good lord that’s a good question. Definitely something aftermarket. I’ve used Corbin and Lepera in the past.

I think they’ll move the engine up to a 117 in the next year or two. Also, 2025 is the Fatboy’s 35th anniversary so I wouldn’t be surprised to see an special model next year.

What Harley would you recommend for a 225lbs 6'3" new rider? With a Sportster my knees are up to my ears... Street Bob w/forward foot controls?
Well, I would always recommend something with a lower displacement like a Sportster for a newer rider, however, it’s not for everyone. A Street Bob or a Softail Standard would be the next step up. The Softail has a 107 engine, and the Street Bob has the 114. Both could work with forward controls. Another thing you could do is put on an engine guard with highway pegs. That would allow you to stretch out a little more. A good thing is that they both come with mini apes stock. For a guy your size that may feel more comfortable instead of the lower bars on other models. Styling wise, I find the Street Bob much better looking than the Softail Standard.
Get a sporty with forward controls
Any H-D is too small for anyone over 6 feet. Look at a used Yamaha or Honda if you want the bike to start every time.

for what it's worth, I started riding in 2022 on a brand new 2022 Fatboy. However, I did go through the MFS course and took additional instructions specifically low-speed maneuvers (clutch and Throttle control in the sweet spot called the friction zone). Practiced doing figure eights within a 20'-30' box.. I have never dropped the bike or come close to it...and now have 10k miles under my belt. It has nothing to do with the size of the bike, and everything to do with confidence. Confidence comes with training and practice..you can do it..check out the different "low-Speed videos online, I watched about 80 hours worth. God-Speed

I really not surprised because I noticed while sitting on a new 2021 model fatboy and standing it strait up it would fall left each time..i didn't like that..the have that power train pushed to the right of the frame as far as posible, but I still find that clutch pack sticking out so far a nuance..so I now have two late model touring harleys
@@canadiansa1nt309 mine is a 2018, 107. 2 yrs ago I fitted Bridgestones at about %60 of the dealer price for Scorchers.
A T32 rear fits the front. It's a dual compound which gives good grip but still wears on the edges like the originals did.
I'm guessing that's due to the massive rear tyre and the heavy camber we have on our roads. Next time I might try Metzlers. Cheers from Aussie.

My 1st bike was ,and I still own is a Honda Shadow 1100. At with any bigger HP bike a responsible person has to remember the bike will kill you if you don't respect the power it has .

It’s actually not that bad. With such a low centre of gravity you’d be surprised how easy it is to handle.
@@canadiansa1nt309 It does take some getting used to. I hadn't owned a bike for 30 years when I bought my 2020 Fatboy and those wide tires don't want to turn very well. There were curves on a 65 MPH highway that at first, I'd slow down to 55 or 60 to go through. After I rode the bike a few thousand miles, I'll take those same turns at 100 MPH or better.
Buy a sportster first? And then upgrade in 1-3 months when you realize how slow it is……
If you think a Sportster is slow, especially the ones now, you’re going to be disappointed with a much heavier bike with less horsepower.

( this was a 1988 4 speed 883)
I took it on the M11 up to 100mph .
It was fast .
BUT no way did I do it again .
It was damn uncomfortable at that speed .
