The Last Trains at Surrey Hills and Mont Albert Stations - Metro Trains Melbourne

- The 17th February 2023 marked a historic occasion on Melbourne's rail network with the final trains passing through Surrey Hills and Mont Albert stations on the Belgrave and Lilydale Lines in Melbourne's east. Both stations were closed permanently to facilitate a grade separation project to remove the level crossings at Union Road and Mont Albert Road.
The final trains rolled through the station shortly after 8:30pm. At this time a three month occupation of the line began between Camberwell and Box Hill to demolish the old stations, lower the rail corridor into a trench, and build a brand new Union station in-between the sites of the old stations along the straight section of the rail corridor. The decision to consolidate the two stations was made due to the two stations' close proximity and the impossibility of building the stations on their old sites (ie Surrey Hills station was situated on a curve which isn't allowed under current standards). The rail line and the new Union station will open in May 2023.
In this video we visit Surrey Hills and Mont Albert for the final time to see the last trains. We start the video at Surrey Hills station where we see some trains during the middle of the afternoon peak (of note only citybound trains were stopping here as platform 3 had closed in late-January), before visiting the adjacent Union Road level crossing. We then see some trains at the Mont Albert Road level crossing, before heading to Mont Albert station where we see the tail-end of the afternoon peak, before seeing the final trains to pass through the stations as darkness falls.

Longest Video on Busofdoom channel!?!?
Great job with the editing!!! Vid is Awesome!
Nice.
Very nicely narrated, end of an era.
Having lived near and used both stations regularly, it's somewhat sad to see them go, but I'm keen to see what the new layout will look like. Mont Albert is a beatufil little station but suffers from being skipped by express trains, meaning you're always getting a stopping all stations (up) or a Blackburn (down) to get somewhere. Surrey Hills is better in that regard but is on a sharp bend so makes it a very narrow platform directly in front of the station which makes it slow to disembark in peak hour. So bring on the new configuration I say! You can't stop progress:)
Looking forward to seeing the new Union Station. Hopefully, you can find some trains at the new station when construction is completed in May 2023
Thanks for a great video. It is a bit sad to see Mont Albert and Surrey Hills stations go. I have visited them on many occasions over the years. I have yet to visit the new Union station, which looks quite interesting from he photos.
Farewell Surrey Hills and Mont Albert. 😭😭😭
And we will never see them again. The new Union Station is opening this month.
R.I.P Mont Albert and Surrey Hills
can't wait to catch the first train out of the new union station
i realiise the reasons for getting rid of mont albert and surrey hills, but damn i'll be sad to see surrey hills go. during my school days, my dad would sometimes take me to the union road level crossing after school and we would watch a few trains go by. we even had our own game which i nicknamed train betting, where we had to guess what direction and service type the next train would be.
Monty Albert and Durrey Hills...
I'll be missing my durreys...
Farewell

R.I.P sor- I mean Surrey hills and most Albert they were totally classic
Hope I didn’t scare you too much with the whistle when I went through Surrey hills lol. Can you tell I don’t trust ppl at that crossing?
13:42 if that were me standing there I would of got the fright of my life
@@multiranger748 I just don’t trust ppl at that crossing. Especially after the major fatality there a few years ago.
Apologies for the video bomb at the end 😝
Some clueless tourists will think that Melbourne has a special UNION STATION like Los Angeles and Chicago
Like those in San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, Boston, Miami, Houston, Dallas, or Chicago.
This is really nice man these two stations I used regularly for a long time I’ll surely revisit this for memories
Also here’s a video of a Hitachi going past Surrey hills : ruclips.net/video/JUzK1kiNwBs/видео.html
Foolant nice video.
20:19 you can JUST hear the level crossing at Surrey Hills
Yes I can hear it
Even though its 700m away
Farewell😢😢😢😢
I better get out and film more trains at Union Station one day!
Why not make Union station called Union Road? It’s more realistic as so.
Good job busofdoomfsx, farewell Surrey Hills and Mont Albert 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
