Mrius86 check out Mel Lewis. A master baddass drummer and bandleader. ALWAYS looked like he was waiting for a bus at the busstop while he was performing. Buddha-like chillness.
I'm guessing it's because they know proper technique. Good technique on any instrument is avoid moving anymore than you need to. E.g. it's best to keep your fingers close to the fingerboard on a stringed instrument so it takes less time to finger a note.
Alex Cartes thank you, someone’s giving credit where it’s due, like he literally has to keep up with the insane chord changes on the spot while staying in tempo
@xv621 You will note that I never said that MB was the GOAT. I never implied it or suggested it and the thought was not in my mind when I wrote it. What I said would OBVIOUSLY mean to a non-imbecile or a non-troll that I'm sad MB is no longer with us and that Chris Potter has a lot of the same things I liked about MB's playing and that I like this video very much. It's music, not sports. But that non-imbecile non-troll part maybe excludes you? Or maybe you like Kenny G?
I've heard MANY artists feature a measure or two of "Pop Goes The Weasel" on a variety of instruments over the years. I'M not particularly fond of it... & altho rare... it's NOT all that uncommon. Hmmm...
The first time I even heard of Chris Potter was two years ago in the 55bar in New York, where he came on stage at the end of the second set of the David Binney quartet. David’s a friend of mine, so I was sitting at the bar right next to the band close to the action. There were just a handful of people left in the audience. Comes Chris Potter to just take a solo and blows it out of the water, damn that was amazing. Been hooked ever since!
So great! I don’t think I’d call it insane-rather, even though his solo is intense and exciting, he shows such total control of these difficult changes, that he’s just in complete command of everything; he’s so methodical and clear that it’s like even the band has no choice but to follow him. Insanely GOOD, yet such high-level thought processes. He’s in control of his mind just as much as the horn! So grateful someone shared this.
It's hard to call this insane if every Chris Potter solo is this godlike. He is clearly a virtuoso of the tenor sax. I wish I could be as good as him, and I would be damned if there was someone who would not want to possess his skill.
I know everyone is like, ya gotta just play what's in your heart and don't worry how others play before you...but OMG. This clip ended with the first few notes of the "other guy". I would be sweatin bullets, you got King Arthur playing on Excalibur, "other guy" on a Reference whatever ... no matter how you slice it the next guy is gonna eat shit. Potter should've changed the solo order, play last or have a drum solo after.

I went to see Herbie Hancock a couple of months ago, without bothering to check to see who he was playing with. "Oh, cool, Herbie again," then I got there and realized that Chris Potter was hanging out. It's pretty stupid to buy tickets to something without even knowing who's going to be there, but man, what a great surprise!!!
3:09 i love how he throw the lick, pass through the the first bar at 3:11, and then loose his balance and need to put a step back at 3:13, because it was such a tight move. Body language.
Haha yo at about 1:57 CP turns around and goes, yo kick this sh*t up lol! Savage level 9000 haha welp....no more solos after that.... Haha simply Put... DOPE
Great solo and everyone plays their asses off, they did speed up about 20 clicks throughout it though, sometimes you got to push it but it didnt feel that organic here
Chris Potter is indeed outstanding and frightening, when it comes to technique and energy. But there is more about music. How about sound, soul, swing, emotions and a couple of other things. So saxophonists shouldn't get disencouraged but look for his own strong points. The saxophone became somehow a sort of a sport vehicle……. It doesn't have to be that way!
I total agree with you. This guy is good, but they seem think no one else can play behind Potter, oh ! what about Joshua Redman , Brandford Marsalis & James Carter, many other unknown kats that can Play with soul , technique & swing.
Thank you for your comments, I'm so tired of people saying you can't play coming this guy. Yes has great technical control of the horn , but not a quality sound and no soul. He is just one of many "so called " saxophonist I've heard for years.
Man, the piano man is playing some CRUNCHY shit. Dig it.
Benny Green is hip. He brings it with style and with swing.
Harmony is on point
Indeed! Benny Green and Chris Potter are taking this band to a higher level. I just wish the piano solo was not cut off.
Oh for sure. He and Chris were out beyond the stratosphere together somewhere.
crunchy..?
I like watching jazz drummers, they seem so chill, like they're out walking their dog.
Mrius86 check out Mel Lewis. A master baddass drummer and bandleader. ALWAYS looked like he was waiting for a bus at the busstop while he was performing. Buddha-like chillness.
Lmao not buddy rich and elvin jones unless they were playing ballads
schramschram Elvin is the man
I'm guessing it's because they know proper technique. Good technique on any instrument is avoid moving anymore than you need to. E.g. it's best to keep your fingers close to the fingerboard on a stringed instrument so it takes less time to finger a note.
It's bc you can't hit them hard you have to stay chill
Hi, my name is Chris Potter. I like fishing, reading, and taking massive dumps on people's hopes and dreams.
Agreed!! xD
You have no fucking clue who Chris is.
Jeff Putterman I think you missed the spirit of the joke.
well, that's one way at looking at it...
@alterdestiny the joke was "Chris Potter is so good that it is disheartening for other musicians"
2:56 Dude in another dimension 😂
Acid God lol
yes he is and he is playing at me instead for me enter Jerry Bergonzi
RUclips server almost broke down after passing their algorithms on that...
That's the face you make when you go beyond the "ooo, that's stanky good" face.
The Enlightened Chill Face.
Dis good shit bra
I thought some sax player got injured on stage or something and Chris Potter only had a moments notice to get up on stage and shred lol.
i know you wrote this 5 months ago but thats hilarious
let's just say that whats happened
That’s what I thought too
Still funny. Holy shit. Why have I not heard of Chris Potter? I know him now!
@@BerniesBootlegs1 Totally true comment man I didn't this was a song so I thought that's what happened haha
my favorite about jazz is watching the drummers. this dude look like he's sipping a cup of coffee watching the weather channel while playing.
And then theres buddy rich and elvin jones
I turned around yesterday at my jazz band to watch the drummer bc he was shredding HARD and he just looked so chill bout it ahahaha

Benny Green is a monster
how he continued that 1:57 was crazy
After a solo like this, it‘s hard to stand on stage- with the same instrument in your hand...;))
Except the the next solo was even better. MARCUS STRICKLAND owned the tune!
Chris Royal Show me the solo, please!
100% correct on that comment.

His time is just insane. It's like he's half playing the drums.
I guess he just wanted to destroy that 14yr old Potter's solo in that 1985 record.. fierce fight
Link?

I liked his 14 year old solo better.

Makes me feel a little less empty in a world without Michael Brecker. This is great!
you hit the nail on the head mate!

Yes, wow indeed. Benny's comping didn't hurt.
Bennie Green's comping really is as interesting to listen to as the soloist who is fantastic. Powerful and driving!

Michael Brecker....lol
was that a bar of pop goes the weasel right at the end haha
The biggest badass in this video is Marcus for stepping up and taking a solo after THAT.
Some say he's still soloing this same solo to this day

Marcus Strickland: Damn, I have to follow THAT? He's a fine sax player also, I'm sure he kicked ass on his solo!
Haha
He's actually really burning. Some very interesting concepts in his solo. Should definitely check it out.
Lol. I was thinking the same thing. Especially even worse when they play the same instrument. Potter is a fucking wizard man.

totally agree. so glad i found this channel
Jazz Drummers are always so chill, it's never chaotic like when you're running to the bathroom with 15 feet to go.

Ethan Fanshel didn’t he get beat up by Jotaro?

I think he's done some studio work with them, would've loved to see him on stage with the Dan. Perhaps there's a YT video of that.
You could just feel how alive and electric that room was with everybody swinging their hearts out. I wish I was there!!
In the evening Chris can use his low register to call the cattle back in the barn!
What do you reckon he's saying at 1:56? Signalling to the monitor engineer off stage right probably.
Yeah I wonder too.
I thought he was waving to bring the volume down
He's motioning to turn his monitor down
He's letting them know that this is just his _"B"_ game.

Oh my God Martin Wind was my private teacher at Hofstra!!!
What's crazy is you can tell he's not really feeling it for a while early in the solo, but just pours it on a crushes it anyway.
