Why has it taken me two years stumble across video footage of this gig. I was there. To be more specific, I was working as the system tech for the pa for the entire weekend (in fact the audio was recorded onto my laptop!) This gig was a highlight of my career as a sound engineer. I'd heard of Snarky puppy before, but this was the first time seeing them live and they utterly blew me away. And then Chris Potter came out and blew even further! Truly was a magical show! I'll never forget that gig, the sheer brilliance and musicality from that stage that night was astounding! Big up to all the Snarky Puppy band and crew, and Chris Potter. Will never forget that show! (In fact I still have the raw recording and listen to it a lot)!
Anyone who skipped to the 11:00 mark missed out some really, REALLY fantastic playing. Love Chris Potter. This was awesome Bob. If I soloed that long it would sound like some guy noodling. Chris sounded like he was searching, building, deconstructing, re-working, revisiting... REACTING... just energetically phenomenal.
My favorite part is at 9:58 when he plays this insane fill solo and at the end he gives the "man I screwed up" kinda look when that was 10x then anyone ever haha
Totally get that, but you're also not Chris Potter. I don't imagine Chris thinks that of himself in any world, but I also think when you're THAT good you probably just hear that and go "well, that's a little much but that's nice of them to say" and move on.
Imagine your favorite musician in your house playing and talking to you. For me that would be John mayer or the whole crew of snarky puppy. Youre lucky Bob! Get it? Lucky, like one of your songs... yeah, never mind...
Utterly stunning. How could he play this once only with an unfamiliar but spectacular band, stay so close to the original played on keys not horn, and yet utterly slay it?
This video edit unfortunately misses something amazing and nuanced that happens right when Chris Potter first comes out. He acknowledges the applause, but before he begins he glances to the band for the One. The percussionist picks up on it and gives it to him. He nods thanks and starts his solo. You can see the exchange clearly in one of the other videos of this performance. Not to be missed.
I LOVE the conversation between the sax and the bass, but the expressiveness at about the 5:50 mark...I'm at a loss for words. I haven't even finished watching it yet!
I've heard Coltrane, Garbarek, Kenny G, Grover Washington, Mezzoforte, John Surman and Brandford Marsalis my whole life long. And in 2021 i have found this: oh my god.🙏🕯🙈Just unbelievable.
I'm just in awe and extreme joy Bob. Wow what you just did to my head and my heart. Just blown away. I went from Sanborn to Branford to Brecker and then Potter. 25 years later.
So after my 5th time watching this is just lost it. This is great, crazy, smooth, ......... This guys has so much to say, after all these years he is still hungry. Damn you Chris!!!! Thank you Chris
Dude’s flying across the country to play at our local high school jazz band festival. This solo makes me verklempt. Kudos to Bob and others sharing a stage with such an alien superhero (and the person who transcribed the whole thing)!
+Bob Reynolds - two months later and I still play this video at least once a week or more. This weekend I had it playing on the big screen TV at home. It was early in the morning and my oldest son (5 years old) came into the room. He is normally a chatter box but he stood in silence watching Chris blow. His body swayed to the beat a little but he recognized the magic. It was pretty cool. Side note - I love how Michael League gently supported Chris at the beginning of the solo by responding, kicking up the energy, queuing the percussion. It's a thing a beauty. I may come on in a few more months and say the same thing. Awesome stuff.
Chris Potter is truly amazing. That solo was really something special! Larnell Lewis and Marcelo Woloski ; What a dream team!! The whole band is incredible! Absolutely love this video. Thanks for uploading it, Bob Reynolds
Absolutely INCREDIBLE solo. Potter is always constructing/composing motifs and rhythmic structures, developing lines that alternate sheer virtuosity with beautiful melodies, organizing a musical architecture on the spot. It is diverse and coherent at the same time. His technique is beyond impeccable, but it is serving a brilliant creative mind, not only virtuosity.
Utopia would be achieved if Cory Henry improvised with Chris Potter on this tune, thanks for sharing this Bob, you guys are not only inspiring musically, but also as people, how humble and amazing you are, thanks for the inspiration, keep rocking!
Privileged to witness this awesome performance by Snarky Puppy & Chris Potter - one of the many highlights from #CheltJazzFest 2017. Mindblowing stuff! Please come back :-)
I just want to take the time to recognize how amazing snarky puppy is as a band. The way they build the backgrounds to a solo is outstanding and unlike anything I’ve ever heard. And when I say backgrounds, I not degrading the music in anyway. They are just as important as the solo that is leading them. However, you’ve just got to appreciate the build up as it leads right into the horn section once they come in and it is just perfect. Makes Chris Potter look like even more of a God than he already is!
Snarky Puppy do it in 'gear changes', going from level to level in an episodic way. Check out the slow builds of Esbjorn Svensson Trio to see masterly *interaction*, not staged accompaniment
Agh! I'm so excited for you man! This is was such an awesome opportunity for you and the band. Thanks so much for putting this all together for us to watch!
I love Chris. I've seen him quite a few times. Not just a phenomenon walking the earth, but a nice and humble human being. Redman? I like Dewey. I had heard about Joshua and expected a lot, so I bought some albums unheard. Those Josh Redman albums were smooth jazz.
Bob, so stoked for you. You actually got to jam with and spend time with a major influence in your art. That is so awesome and rare, You my man, are so worthy of carry his mantle and then some. Love your art brother, can’t wait till the puppy comes to west coast (San Diego/L.A.) again. .... Peace, Love & Strength........ Good Music can heal, Great music can cure...... and Ya’ll got the cure brother.

Whoever had the idea to place the camera on top of the bass amp is a freakin genius.
It was the only place I could stash it quickly ☺️
Harry is definitely not the only wizard in the family.
Haha....
his parents? nah but good joke
Lol yes!

So, you got paid to see him playing. You should return your money :)....not fair...:)
Great recording man! Yes it was an amazing show but if you can't capture the audio its like a tree falling in the woods.
Well, how cool is that! You did a great job with the sound.
You did an amazing job!

+Eric Brewington totally
Who would conceivably skip to the 11:00 mark?! otherwise spot on : P
Eric Brewington That’s exactly what I was thinking. It was a piece within a piece. But it made a whole piece and became one with the band
I was going to say the same.
yeah why would you even skip the reason why you clicked on this video xD
I watch this once a month to keep my musician ego in check. Man o man
Same lol
My favorite part is at 9:58 when he plays this insane fill solo and at the end he gives the "man I screwed up" kinda look when that was 10x then anyone ever haha
Clayton DeVries ahahahha so true!
The search is never over :)
Kinda sounded like a brecker lick
A humble genius
I think that was "man Im good" kinda look :D
Imagine being introduced to thousands of people as "the best saxophonist in the world." I think I might shrink into myself and die hahah
Ofay Cat Usually... but then there is Wayne Gretzky and Chris Potter.
@@griffinsemple Bob's no slouch either.
Griffin Semple yeah check out bob’s solo on lingus as well
PROBABLY the best saxophonist and I think Potter must know that too :)
Totally get that, but you're also not Chris Potter. I don't imagine Chris thinks that of himself in any world, but I also think when you're THAT good you probably just hear that and go "well, that's a little much but that's nice of them to say" and move on.
As it turns out you can only press like once. I’ve watched this over and over again many times and it’s still mindblowing.
WOW! 8 minutes of eternal bliss! Thank you, Bob!!!!
i love how the camera shakes on every kick
Traveler like we're in a Sax solo haze
Yeah, that’s what happens when there is not an adequate shock mount on the camera.
@@davepopeproductions9852 i tought that happends every time Chris Potter is phrassing bro 😄
09:20 is a glorious moment! Clearly he doesn't know the song, but he picks up on his role so fast. I really like that.
Edging masterclass. The tension my goodness 🙌🏻
7:06 - the best moment of this solo, in my opinion. This rhythmic development/displacement, half step up, then back...magical! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Skip? SKIP? I listened to every second, rewinding so many times I knew it off by heart before I'd got to the end 😍
He really is spectacular... the best out there today.
Did anyone else just start uncontrollably weeping in the middle of the solo because they were so happy?
This one hits me hard. Gotta mentally prepare for the listen.
Can we all appreciate Larnell Lewis for this awesome supporting fill at 4:50! That is some amazing active listening drummer!
good shout, i had missed that one. you can see michael immediately turn to give the appreciative nod to larnell
The cut between CD's and then "oh yeah by the way Chris is IN MY HOUSE." is the best. Wow.
+Adam Marshall ;)
Imagine your favorite musician in your house playing and talking to you.
For me that would be John mayer or the whole crew of snarky puppy.
Youre lucky Bob! Get it? Lucky, like one of your songs... yeah, never mind...
OMG!!!! Chris!
Utterly stunning. How could he play this once only with an unfamiliar but spectacular band, stay so close to the original played on keys not horn, and yet utterly slay it?
I love how he quotes some licks from Cory's solo, what a legend
Now thats one ill wind thats been blown real good. Awesome performance.

@@markroberts171 the first beat
That's for mentioning Sonny Stitt, he's often overlooked as one of the best ever. His version of 'Loverman' is my favorite performance, by anyone...
Makes my cry EVERYTIME!!!
I love how everyone is amazed by Potter, then there's just Bob and Chris Bullock fan-boying on the side of the stage. By God I would be too.
I think Chris potter will go down in history as another legend.
DON'T skip ahead to the 11:00 mark!! DON'T DO IT!!! That was simply amazing!!
Everytime, everytime I watch this video and see you smile Bob listening of that man, I am with you!!
WOW! This is a monster performance !!! Loved it !!! Thanks !

You can clearly tell Chris Potter was having a blast! So awesome Bob!
Cool to hear how the fusion vibe brings out the Brecker in Potter. He’s a saxophone colossus
at 9:58 that Bob Reynolds smile is perfect
schneidercorn ... perfect smile....perfect Breckerish playing.
Ha! I saw that too. Sooo good. I played this video several times today already.
That lick is soooooooooooo dirty!
I also love right after that at 10:12 when Chris repeats the end notes of their phrase but up an octave - so good it makes Bob's knees buckle! :)
I almost forgot bob ross and the happy little trees... or clouds or eah love this video
9:58 When I heard him play that lick for the first time, I felt like I was in space watching the Earth rotating
9:59 your face is priceless. I can feel all the passion you put into the saxophone because of chris potter ! Inspiration man ....

Chris Potter is freaking insane!!! So many ideas in such a simple riff.
10:38 hahaha...Chris Potter is a insane sax player!!! I love him!
This should be studied in all serious music schools. CP's solo is blissfully PHENOMENAL
I watched the whole thing. Holy smokes, this guy is insane!!!!
I can listen to this recording on repeat all day. How amazing it must have been to be in the audience to hear this magic happening!

I recognise the enormity of the situation!!!! WOW!
Truth....
I like that he had no idea about the song structure. It's fun watching him figure it out once the other horns came in
Why does he have to be so damn good?????? Words can’t even describe that man.

Fabric of space and time is literally pulling itself apart as this man plays.

I just love seeing Michale League’s expressions during the first half of the solo!
I just love how ML gets into the music and is having the same reaction like the rest of us, genuine admiration and jaw drop haha
