- Chris Potter came over to hang while he was in Los Angeles with his band. I couldn't resist having him test-drive my Mark VI and SBA saxophones.

i love the interactions with your kids in your videos. thats about how my practicing goes, with random interruptions you just have to enjoy. the latest was my son bringing in 3 saxophone playing santas decorations and playing all 3 at the same time with all different songs. lol
0:26 - I love Janek. He's so goofy when he plays, but his enthusiasm is ridiculously infectious. Also, I love how he just _pops up_ out of seemingly nowhere.
Just discovered your VLOG man and I am totally hooked. Your editing of your videos is off the chain man because it adds so much to the experience and may be overlooked because the story you tell is so compelling in general. You're a baaaaaad man Bob.
+Sam Jackson hi Sam. Thank you for noticing. :)
I love how much you are a fan of Chris - so authentic, so real. Thanks for this great vlog, giving us an insight into your life.
These vlogs are getting more entertaining by the day, thanks Bob!
Yes! I had difficulty distinguishing the saxes. The sound as you said, Bob, is Chris's. That is a lesson in itself.
Bob, is Chris as humble and nice as we see him through these videos and other interviews? Amazing that he's not only the best on the planet, but also so down to earth!
+Kyle TS 100%
Good question Kyle TS
Thanks Tony Rosenberg!
Two Tenor Giants! You should record an album together...really!
I'm ruclips.net/video/jjaqrPpdQYc/видео.html
ahahahaha
hahahaha
Hahahaha!
Bob, love the vid of you and your dudes just sitting around in the living room, rehearsing informally. Wicked cool.
And, you have the best vacuum cleaner player in the world there!
Bob
Really enjoying the videos.
The insight you provide as a working musician is amazing. You are one who
is blessed with talent, a beautiful family, and what appears to be a wonderful life. As a newbie (2 1/2 years) on the saxophone it's great getting advice and tips from masters like yourself, Chris Potter, and others who post amazing vlogs. (Dan Forshaw, Donna Schwartz to name a couple).
Keep up the great work!
Bob you are soooo funny not wanting to touch your mouth piece after Chris played it. Awesome just Awesome video.
my piano teacher recorded an album together with chris...told me about how amazing he is, and he really is!
Your vlogs man ... You know when you think about 10 minutes, it may appear like it's quite a long time, but it actually felt like 1.... So good ! It's nice to see Janek from your channel too !
+StompL7 thanks! (a LOT of minutes go into {trying to} make it feel that way.)
Was that "Are You Going With Me?" in the background at the end? Haha...I love soloing over those changes.
reminds me of my son -- the little man. He grew and and is now way bigger than me. "It could happen to you". All the best
Hey men, not cool calling Chris Potter "the little man", i know Bob is taller and all but i think it's a bit harsh
nah i think hes talking about Bob's son
2:50 oh man...what a moment. Chris nodding along to what Bob plays...or he's noticed that Bob just pooped his pants and he nods thinking, "damn right, man, that's the only way to react in this situation"
😂💩
Love the SBA sound with either you or Chris driving. Fatter and warmer...but the VI seems to "bark" more, which is cool too. Toss up really.
SBA over VI and son over pink horse pillow on couch for the win. The SBA to my ears sounded warmer and rounder. I'm a big fan of warm round tone. Not to put another thing on your to-do list but do you have an expected date for new music release? I'm really looking forward to checking it out.
Juice
oh, Are you going with me? at the end of the video, i used to listen with my little daughter, it's her fav, i also used to improvise on this song, thank you Bob, i'm definitely subscribed and following you! :)
You are just a God-Gifted-Talented and Blessed creature. I love you Man. From Nigeria. Big Fan!
Great vlogs man... Always motivating and inspiring... That moose the mooche with soprano ! :) Greetings from Cyprus
Bob, you make great videos and even greater music. I'm a fan. Thank you.
this is sweet! thanks bob
You are my hero! I'm 14 and play sax and I aspire to Be like you!
There´s Chris and then there´s everyone else...
No there’s also Kenny garrett
Your blessed with beautiful babies in addition to awesome talent on the horn.😊👍
I can’t imagine shedding with Chris Potter. Or either of you for that matter. I learn best by being around the people who are playing the way I desire.
Your videos are super entertaining! Keep it coming!
Thanks, Danny!
That little dude is boss...
Must have been an amazing experience to be able to interact with Potter. He's also one of my heroes but I'd say my biggest hero (as a pianist) is Brad Mehldau and so I hope to have a lesson with him someday. Will you ever go through your CD collection in a video?
I love this video. thanks bob
a day in the life! Very cool vlog.
Grant!
At the very end, sounded like Pat Metheny's Are You Gong With Me. Would love to hear you am on that tune!
Hey man if your don't want that horse pillow, I'll take it haha! That thing is hilarious
Race Hoglund
great tone on the SBA
I also once was obsessed with vacuums.
i see you have a ploeger sound mirror. I have been using one for years. A great invention
+ddruc40 game changer
@ 3:55 .... There it is.
aka Long tones! Develop and create your own expectation of sound.
Nice observations about Chris and "expectancy" of sound and performance.
Best Sax related 'Click Bait' EVER... :)
haha nice !
Dan Forshaw how is it clickbait.
Adam Stein ROFL
Hello. thank you for the work done and for showing the life of musicians. Thank you!!!! please tell me what it sounds like 9:23, I've heard it before but can't remember. ??? Thank you
3:57 The absolute truth of this alltime ongoing gear thing :-)
And why / who would ever give this a thumbs down? Holy mackerel.
Thank you !
Very Helpful
The way that Chris passes Bob the horn holding it at the top. Is that a good way to hold it without damaging it? Tenor is so awkward to hold. When I hold it in the middle I feel like the key rods are bending.
I'll buy one of them sax-horse pillows.
That pillow is probably a reference to a silly yet funny youtube video called "saxophone horse".
Love your sound on the soprano. Could you share on what horn and setup?
Before I watched this I thought, "Well, I think I'm good enough to play in a backing band for some pop artist" then saw Philip Dizack and Bob Reynolds so I better keep practicing
The SBA sounds more mellow than the than the Mark VI. Seems to me the SBA would be for smaller rooms and the Mark VI for larger rooms. BUT, they both sound great!
Fan Trombone wish I had the money to buy just one of them ._.
Not that my opinion matters AT ALL, but I really love your sound on the Mark VI. You get a really gorgeous smooth, warm, round sound on the SBA (really well suited for straight-ahead playing); but I've always loved the subtle pop/R&B edge you have in your sound and I feel that the VI really accentuates that. I think it would sound odd hearing your original music on the SBA. The Mark VI just sounds like it has more balls, if that makes any sense?
It does. I feel the same.
And I thought I added, but apparently didn't -- the vacuum cleaner player is the best!
Two wonderful horns. I think that maybe your ebonite mouthpiece is the best match for the MKVI?
incredible
what theme name 0:20 ???
Awesome! You sound fantastic like always.... SBA sounds great. What did Chris Potter say about ligature placement, you changed yours lower than usual. Any difference?!
Hey Bob,
Any tips for increasing practice room endurance? When I get off of work or done at the gym sometimes I'm just completely drained and don't have the energy to get done what I want/need to get done on the practice room. My ideal practice time is in the morning (which isn't always possible due to apartment quiet hours).
Thanks man! I love your videos! (I give my students extra credit points for watching them)
Ty
Yup. See Vlog Ep 9
8:25 Moose The Mooche? It was killing me for like 10 minutes after...
+Mike and Kathy Cofell yup
Got a link to any more concert footage from that killing clip of Chris with Dan Weiss and others?
Kevin Romain Saw Dave Binney there as well
Who was that drummer that was walking in at 5:34 Baked Potato scene? Looks like my buddy Chaun Horton.
it is/was
Awesome! Thanks for all the great vids. I know they take a lot of work.
great vlog
So, since everyone goes crazy over Selmer Mk VI tenors of the "Michal Brecker vintage" (~85k), tell us what vintage Chris Potter's horn is, so we can jack up the price of that "vintage" of horn. Like your comment that Chris Potter sounds like Chris Potter on any horn because he is Chris Potter and does what Chris Potter does. It's not the horn.
Haha at 4:42 on the shelf you can see Hindsight before you ever released it
Its a little hard to tell but it seems like Chris' sound is projecting further than yours on the SBA, how much would you say that's down to the mouthpiece? (I'm going to buy a new mouthpiece this week and was nearly settled on a hard rubber Otto but I struggle projecting sometimes so maybe I should get a metal mouthpiece instead? Though I totally hear what you're saying regarding it being in the player)
keep in mind multiple cam angles and vantage points and different mics. not something you can really tell from these clips (but of course CPs sound is gigantic!)
Ah yes of course, thanks
Stephen Watson I have a hard rubber Otto link and I love it, definitely gives me enough projection. it is person to person though.
Thanks man I actually just bought a tone edge size 8 a couple of days ago and you're so right
Bob Reynolds to me, you projected much more on the Mk. I liked you better on the Mk and I liked Chris better on the SBA.
Hey there Bob, what camera do you use to make these videos it looks and sounds great!
your tone's changed! what did ya do?
Wow, this is awesome! When you and Potter traded horns and played stuff, what were you guys playing? I know it's kinda just noodling around, but even when you guys are noodling it sounds awesome. Do you guys thinking and noodling to changes in your heads?
+lyemeep yes
Do you know what types of reeds chris potter uses ? And what do you use aswell?
Series 111Soprano?
I didn't really hear a demonstration of comparison between the two .
Bob, Who is the Trombone playing with you behind Gavin DeGraw? He looks familiar.
Lasim Ahmed
You have 3 tenors in your studio? I thought you only had the SBA and Mark VI. Is that last one a P. Mauriat Horn?
where can i get that pillow please bob
i don't know where they got it
What song plays at 0:50?
I love the SBA sound better. Yeah I'm a bassist. Hi Janek!
How many sax do you have
Teach me.
In my head i see it like, there's Chris Potter, then there's Bob Reynolds, then there's me.
Lol. Fangirling so hard!
hey!
what is that plastic thing hanging ok your horn at the end of the vídeo?
+Rodrigo Bertoa see Episode 89
Which Serial Number is the SBA? Thanks
What is funny, I have the exact same vacuum and my 4 year old grandson loves to vacuum with it. Too Funny
Do you guys use your own mouthpieces when you switch between sax's?! (not a saxophonist...)
+Harry Phillips yes
strange relief
put Chris Potter on a 70s Bundy and let's all hear how he sounds
can do ya one better ruclips.net/video/7YOV0kZQIAo/видео.html
To my ear it was the SBA over the VI.
what goes through your head when you are doing this solos? without chord changes I would feel lost.
I'm so sad i missed CP's show at the Blue Whale. How often does CP play clubs in LA??? F'ing responsibilities and coworkers who will never change their schedules for me. Also, the 6 mo old screamer has kept me away from shows.
On a different topic. Euge Grove has stated that he uses a guitar stand while performing. I'm not a performer, but man, leaving a SBA alone on a tiny stage like the Baked Potato would scare the crap out of me.
Hi Bob, about your LOVELY kid, it all starts with a vacuum-cleaner before he becomes a great saxophone player as yourself and Chris.
That looks like a bari vacuum. He needs a sopranino size.
+zebra3stripes hahahaha!
Must be doing something right if you're rubbing shoulders with Chris
som do Sba mais gordo mais forte com mais encorpo. minha preferência Sba mark vi mais brilho.
Please indulge me and forgive my ignorance....never heard of an SBA sax. Is that an abbreviation? Fill me in please.
Super balanced action
BTW -- my ears, Mark VI brigher and better balanced, but still rich and warm enough to kill. The SBA was very dark, almost muffled at times. Play the VI!!!!!!!!!!
yup
8:40, I'd say you are more of a 4:20 kinda guy
Bojack plays sax
Someone clearly likes Aperol
Haha! The liquor store gave me that box to carry some bottles of wine out. :)
classic pay metheny tune
Otto links give everyone same sound . Pinched nose sound
If I were you I would never wash that mouthpiece Chris used ever again
