The conclusion of this arc is going to be so satisfying
104,000 sax players sharing your journey through finding a mouthpiece! Feels like a soap opera to us Bob - equal measures of intrigue and anticipation but laced with a lot of compassion for your challenge. ❤
Eventually the rabbit hole comes for all of us. We are with you every step of the way Bob. I know you will find your new forever piece and you’ll be good until your 60s!
Loving this process man
No. Bob. Do NOT get over it. You have YOUR sound, and you want that sound that you hear! I comprehend that! Keep the faith man! You'll find it!!
Man vlog should never end…
sunglasses bob is a vibe
Does my heart good to see and hear a Rico 3 1/2. Best reed ever made.
That had me intrigued also, mostly because I play whatever is available as a band director ha. In other words, orange box does fine because it vibrates!
Hey Bob! Love the vibes🙌
Do you have a mouthpiece that you come back to, if you get frustrated from searching?
Always feel like coming back to a stable(ish) set-up helps me ground my sound and reminds me what im looking for.
Listening to you is always a pleasure to my ears ❤ whatever mouthpiece.... greetings from Italy
🙏
Man i love the edge youre able to achieve from that piece while still being able to play dark in softer volumes 👍 👍
Question: I like this "series" :D and I even do not play sax, I am a guitarist...1) Am I mad? 2) Should I start playin?
would love to have a studio like yours, man
Your frustration is front and center is this video. Get new glasses ordered and being made (so something is coming) and continue the search. Funny how we go from glasses to mouthpieces. Glasses are how we see the world, that way we perceive it. And a mouthpiece is how we see the world through our saxophone. If the piece (or glasses) aren’t quite right, it alters that very comfortable view we used to have. (And worked hard to get!) And since they don’t make what you had before, it is a monumental search to recreate the comfortable place you once had, but lost. I feel for you, man. I am praying you don’t have any gigs come up that would be impossible with sunglasses. Anyway, Thank you for all you do. Keep searching. I have faith you will find it. And in the meantime, i don’t mean to say I enjoy your pain, but i do find your thoughts and experiences interesting. Sending more positive vibes your way. ❤
Glasses already on order
Try a Ted Klum Tonamax, I think it would be in your lane
lol love the videos Bob.
I'm amazed that folks can get a sound out of a 9* and an orange box 3 1/2!
Funny. Timing is everything. I turned 71 a couple days ago. Still playing professionally after nearly 60 years at it. What you may be discovering, if you're anything like me, is that your body is changing. Our ears change too. And it's so subtle, these changes. You may find that those big open pieces, with stout reeds, begin to offer just too much physical resistance to keep up with. And your ears hear the result differently too. Especially in the upper end, where we lose our hearing first. Top gets brittle sounding. Kinda sucks. But we carry on. Don't mean to rain on your parade...just sayin'. Love the videos (and glasses!). May your journey through life continue to be a happy dance. (Sorry...just got back from seeing Wicked...loved it.)
I totally understand Bob. I've played a variety of set ups and I've finally found a brilliant one for my playing situation. Yay! I'm the tenor sax player in a heavy metal jazz band though. I've just recently bought a JodyJazz super jet 7*, plus a gold plated power ring, with Boston Sax Shop 2.5 silver box reeds. I'm now getting the sound I always wanted! Huzzah! Now I can really focus on putting in more work. 🎈⭐🌈🎶🎷
Maybe try a JodyJazz Giant mouthpiece?
Yeah, I mean, mouthpieces (and gear, in general) is never going to do any work for you - ideally the best it can do is "get out of your way" - allow you to sound the way you want to sound with the least amount of fighting against your gear. I don't think you have to eat your words - practice gets you 95% of the way there, but once you're there, and it's time to take care of that last 5%, then yeah, gear is going to matter for that. So I don't think you're contradicting yourself, I just think that most of us enjoying your channel have to take care of a lot more of that 95% that comes from practicing, so our time and efforts are best spent in the shed instead of the store!
It's really frustraiting with the instruments and their physically. I sometimes think that yeah, classical guitarists have it easy, it's only a guitar and nylon strings.
But then you need to take into account the humidity, the changes of the temperature, strings getting broken, oh damn it, it just sometimes really hard. Keeping my fingers crossed for you! I recent;ly got back to your live recording with OGwizdala and the rest of the squad, beautiful music, I simply love it, thank you a lot! Come to Poland!
It sounds like to me what you’re really looking for is a custom piece. There are any number of mouthpiece gurus I’m sure that would love to work with you to create such a piece.
Time to get back to the overtone grind, good queue 😅
🤔I don’t know what I want, but I want more of it☮️🎵🎶🎷
You have more mouthpieces than my local sax store! Your old mouthpiece baffle looks like my 7 Tone Edge.
I feel like you’re going about this like it’s 1990. You don’t need to do this anymore! Buy an old link of the vintage your old one is and take it to one of the many fantastic mouthpiece people around now. Or take a shot at something new like the Ted Klum Florida or Sebastian Knox Traditional, where you can work with them to dial things in the way you want. ❤
unfortunately, i have sent to people and the results are not there (yet). and all the new mouthpiece makers put way too much baffle in their pieces. i have custom pieces from several of them and the baffles are crazy high. they do this to satisfy a market that has demanded ever easier to play (less resistant) mouthpieces.
@ Oh man, that’s disappointing. Sorry to hear that. I hope you find the right fit!
@@bobreynolds This is my personal bias obviously but I think we share a similar taste in sound clarity and center… have you ventured into Sebastian’s options? They both have a much more gradual slope away from the tip rather than the high short baffle.
Exactly @@bobreynolds
This is a common problem I see as a repair technician, from people who play their set up to the ground. They just can't find something to replace it because there's nothing that feels and sounds like their set up that just bit the dust. Mental/ emotional/ sentimental and physical attachment is hard to break. I think playing a couple different mpcs is fine, couple instruments is also fine. Just don't put it on yourself to find "The One" in your set up. There's no such thing, YOU are the one.
Seems like the Tone Edge you had was ether the norm at the time, or a variation for some reason. I know, and I'm sure this isn't news, but classical pieces tend to have less rollover baffle like your looking for. But they probably lack in other ways.
Those New Vintage Otto Links are not going to sound the same as your old piece. I know you have tried a lot of pieces but I think since you are used to the standard tone edge, you should trial more of those pieces. One of them has to sound close to your old one and then you can have the facing cleaned up if need be. Just my 2 cents after going down the mpc rabbit hole.
I could do some Black Friday over there!!!
Can you link the ikea piece?
Did you talk to Ted Klum? Your sound concept is in the same league as Seamus Blake IMO.
So many online battles discussing GAS and why it doesnt matter using your arguments, and this truth-bomb! - Fuck it, i'm also going to get sunglasses with subscription lenses and a friggin hat to go with them! 😂🙃
Edit; What sunlasses tho?
First mp sounded pretty nice but its missing that "sizzle" that i associate with your sound
Why the wide opening 9* with a thick 3.5 reed? Given thought to a narrower opening? Either way, your sound is great with this setup.
ps. Been there, done that with the Rx shades.
Yeah Bob,it is brighter....did you put that IKEA thing together yourself? Always good to hear from you Bob
What’s the song @ 2:27??
Moanin
You are looking for a new mouthpiece. I watched your videos. It is not easy, I guess. Are you able to do your gigs and saxophon-work nevertheless? Does the compromize-mpc block your genious? Can you still work or do you have to pause your work/gigs until you find the perfect mpc? Greetings from Germany. (hope you understand my english)
Each gig is a different shade of pain (bc of mpc frustration)
Hey Bob
What pads and resonators are installed on your horn? I guess Music Medic, their red ones + domed metal resonators?
Cheers,
plastic resonators
You just need to talk to Mark at 10mfan mouthpieces and you won't have to mess around with this stuff anymore.
😎🎵🎶🎷
Just remember kids, start on a 2 and go up. If you're not practicing all the time you are not going to want to play 4s.
Also if your playing second tenor making your altissimo pop is not your top priority.
True
Man, That high F tone hole looks pretty jagged. (Unless it’s just the camera angle).
I think you should look at Drake mouthpieces.
Bob Reynolds and Corey Hart
Contact Ted Klum Bob! He will solve your issue 😅
I think hard work doesn’t mean being able to play a 9* with reed 4. You certainly did the hard work, but the conclusión shouldn’t be being able to play certain equipment . Some pro players play softer reeds and that doesn’t mean they didn’t do the hard work. They also sound great.
Not the size/opening but rather the work to develop tone (and not expect that a particular mouthpiece or piece of gear “delivers” tone)
Casey Nisetat said he wears sunglasses on camera so he can stare at the screen and not camera lenses
Why you think your old mouthpiece is no longer good?
See previous vids about it
Bit of chewing gum on the baffle ? soften things out ?
At this point, why not? 🤷♂️
@@bobreynolds Bit of an old wives tale maybe , that said apparently the OG's back in the day did it
Either way cool runnings Bob
Is it me, or is sunglasses Bob sassier?
