Every time I listen to Sinatra, I am so taken by his subtle phrasing and tone. I have transcribed some of his singing. It’s so much more musical than one realizes. He’s just about my favorite singer.
@bobreynolds - here’s another share where you’re like my next door neighbor. Let’s just sit down and shoot the breeze amount music, latest mouthpieces, what are we listening to….thanks for being so relatable and inspirational. PS - I was at the show you did with John Mayer in the Woodlands, 2010 I believe - you and he jammed a duet for about 12 minutes, you were on your soprano. That’s my personal favorite way to play. And that was my favorite part of an amazing show.
I’ve never been a big Sinatra fan… I know - I know… but I have a sneaky suspicion that this record might turn me around. Gonna search for it right now. Thanks! Oh, and beautiful soft, smooth tone… it didn’t sound too different when you pushed it… not to me… but I understand your quest is one of legend… so every little factor matters. Especially beautiful for this type of tune (bossa?) in the very low register as well as the very high. That was special. Have a great week and a very happy Thanksgiving!
I’ve played an otto link tone edge for tenor for a while now and have tried other mouthpiece like the get a sax slant and other otto links and none of them really do the things I want like the otto link tone edge. You sound great on this piece though maybe a little brighter in the upper register.
I've been playing one of these for about ten years now. When I ordered it, I ordered 4 similar ones. They all played differently. Still, what you describe counts to a degree for all of them. Also, pretty dark vibe in the video. I hope you're doing well. All the best!
I’m good. Just was late and thought I’d make a random video since I’d been procrastinating by scheming all the details I need to cover for the “next video” which led to (once again) making 0 videos.
No way, Kris! But I doubt I’d be noticing all these subtleties had I not stuck with one for 26 years. Keep practicing and you, too, can become this obsessed about minor details 😌
i use this mouthpiece in a 7* and think i got lucky because the tone's still pleasing to me when i push it. but i don't have nearly as many to compare it to haha
You’re in a whole another universe of skill level from me, but I’ll throw out there that I play an Ishimori Woodstone Traditional Jazz mouthpiece and really love it. Have you tried Ishimori? They seem to be well regarded.
Try to keep your fingers off the vinyl!🙂 Like most others, I have an Otto Link 7 for my tenor and I think it's great. I also use one of Dave Walker's (All Brass & Woodwind, Leeds, England) magic ligatures. You are sitting there stressing about mouthpieces, but ligatures make a whole world of difference! Do you have a tone tablet in your lyre hole? (Corry Bros. Mouthpieces) This makes a surprising difference to your sound as well and is cheap to get. Always great to see you Bob, thanks for the vid!
See ligature video in my channel. I have so many it’s silly. Also, that vinyl in particular is already scratched up bad. But you are right and I don’t man handle the ones in good shape
@@bobreynolds I'm a bit obsessive about vinyl! Dave's lig is the simplest ever, I like simple. I don't think I will ever need a different one from that.
You are new to me Bob yet I dig your playing Sinatra so so Brecker o yeah and Equinox .I'm into the old and new Booker Ervin Paul Consalvez Lucky Thomson Eddie lockjar Davis .those were the oldies like Albert Ayler, Erick Dolphy etc Anyway I'm going to subscribe today.
Hey man, you do a great Max Headroom impersonation with the shades! As soon as you mentioned Claus Ogerman I immediately thought of ‘Cityscape’. That was one of numerous landmark recordings that came out when I was in college and listening to it still puts me in a magical space.
What you're doing might be valuable Bob, not the actual collection, which will soon rival Imelda Marcos's shoe collection. But going deep into the search for a new mouthpiece is honing a specialized aspect of your ear, focused on nuanced tonal details that seem to go unnoticed by others.
You can still always get your old mouthpiece refaced back to what it used to be. I have a vintage hard rubber Berg Larsen that died in the same way, and i sent it out to be revived...I havent needed anything else for that setup since
@ Making new mouthpieces is always a work in progress. Ive noticed that you've been on the search for something just as good or better for a while, but still seem unsatisfied. Certainly not a wasted endeavor, but at the very least, it's nice to have ole' reliable to fall back on.
Surely your sound image is strong enough for a mouthpiece that feels comfortable to grow into what you need, given some time. i don't get the constant changing. Plus you sound as wonderful as ever. So perhaps: just get over it? : 🙏🙏🙏
It’s about the feel. How these things feel-so far, almost none feel comfortable. Which leads to sound. And complete astonishment at the way the mouthpiece makers have cowtowed to players who want “easy” (little resistance/thus too bright) etc. now I’m on a mission and discovering there is a gaping hole in what’s available.
Some. I want to play a link. Like all my heroes. I want them to make the mouthpieces better. The fact that plenty exist proves it’s possible. I just can’t believe how difficult it’s been. The devil truly in the details.
@@bobreynolds There a fantastic refacer in Malmø called Istvan Gabor, he has somewhat of mythical status here in scandinavia. maybe you could hook up with him if intrested?

Miles Davis when asked where he learned how to phrase ballads: Frank Sinatra.
No man , talk mouthpieces! My favorite subject!
Just a chill guy, who plays onto Sinatra and Jobim

Hilarious opening + world class musicianship = That's Entertainment!
☺️
I love that album too!!!
Your tone on "Equinox" sounded great.
It is kind of a vibe. Until I play loud.
Sorry Bob but you look like you’re on a good “buzz” and contemplating if tomorrow is worth the hangover 😂🎉❤
You sounded killer on the metal ny!
Still sounds like Bob Reynolds to me! Amazing man 👏👏
The struggle is real, This is the way.
Looking sharp with them shades on Bob...just chilling there...the vinyl also sounds great
thanks for the record pointer - added to collection.
Second that. Sinatra and Jobim? Thanks Bob.
The piece is good. Spend some more time with it. I like the sound. Great music too. All around.
Thanks

Giving hungover vibes wearing your sunglasses and drinking lots of water. That mouthpiece sounds super nice when played softly.

I can hear what you mean about the tone when you push it. It kinda thins out. It's not super consistent.
Exactly. And I didn’t even push 100% bc didn’t want to distort mic. Also why I backed up.

Everyone wanted the otto link so they all ended up sounding the same.
You think Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Stitt, Ben Webster, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, all sound the same? 🤣
Though you may be less on dealing with mouthpieces right now but, check into Johannes Gerber mouthpieces. Specifically the Vintage Slant Model.
He made me a custom piece. Slants are not what I’m after though
Try the Wanne Ambika first edition. It’s terrific. One is on eBay right now.
